Yeah, makes no sense to me either. Not like giving it to a 24 year old violates the "Makarov Rule" the NHL established to prevent someone over 26 years old from winning the Calder - and Makarov won it when he was 31!

Looking good so far. All deserving.

Agreed

With all due respect to Modano, and not just saying this because I hate Chelios, but when he retires, Kane will likely be seen as the greatest American born hockey player of all time.

Yeah, well deserved Hart, vote was not even close. He picked up a Ted Lindsay as well. That said he is not the first US born player to win the Hart but the most recent (and only other) US born player to win it was in 1925 - Billy Burch.

People are considering Kane as the first because he was developed and lived in the United States.

to say American born, as the only criteria, then it'd be wrong.

American born, lived, and developed in the USA is what you should be saying

Hail yes. Me too. We're getting there pretty damn early both days. No problem paying $20 for an extra couple hours of tailgating at Alpine.

I'll PM you my number.

I think we're going to get quite a bit. This Vegas thing + salary cap barely going up is going to cause a minor frenzy, I think.

Hey morons, when the team starts playing in Vegas do you think the league will still hold the awards ceremonies there? Will they find a neutral city with no team to host them? Maybe combine the draft and the awards in the same city? Cycle between the 31 (likely 32 sometime soon) existing cities that host teams?

I can't even watch that shit anymore. It's like a REALLY bad award show. I miss the days of it being in Toronto and just the HNIC guys hosting it. It's so bad now. So they could just announce the damn awards via twitter for all I care. I have a feeling it stays in Vegas for some reason. Just a feeling though.

I was just watching some of the highlights and yes, much of it is quite cringe-worthy. However, like I hinted at last night, this is the first awards in a long time where I was totally pleased with all the winners.

Oh, and big news out of Colorado today that Reto Berra was traded to the Panthers. He will be missed. :rolleyes

i bet it stays in Vegas

the fact that it's now an NHL city only helps it IMO

Re: The NHL Thread

Sportsnet put up a video of the last time Canadian teams picked in the same slots they are picking this year. Flames picked #6 in both 97 and 98. The pick in 98....Rico Fata.

Also the pick in 97 was Daniel Tkaczuk. The Flames fucked up 2 very high picks in the back to back years. Looking back at drafts around that time....a lot of those bad teams picked bad. Hakws Dan Cleary (who turned out ok with the Wings years later but failed with the Hawks) in 97 and Mark Bell in 98.

Dreger stuff. First the one I like the most:
"Detroit, I absolutely believe, could be one of, if not the top contenders, if Stamkos is going to leave."

Second:
"The Oilers would love to move Nail Yakupov. The problem that they have is they can't get much more than a third-round draft pick."

Good job there Oilers.....

I agree it is the most logical place (entertainment wise) to have it if you exclude say LA and NYC but I think having a team there might complicate it a bit with the way tickets are given out to the actual event. Last thing the NHL needs is an awards ceremony where half the crowd is in favor of one team. Personally I say lets just have it at the Hartford Civic Center for old times sake! :)

Interesting note. Guy I work with is good friends with one of the top scouts for Detroit. Apparently said that when the Oil drafted Yak, everyone was shocked for the simple reason that he'd likely still be there around pick 5 or 6. No one else wanted Yak until MAYBE Toronto at 5.
