Wouldn't Varlamov be the starter for Russia anyways. Bob should be back for the olympics I would guess anyways.

If Bob makes it back for the Olympics it will be interesting to see who gets the starting nod. Going off last season, Bob would obviously be the starter. But Varly has played VERY well this year...

Engelland was suspended five games for his hit on Abdelkader. Abby was on the ice at Comerica as the Wings practiced there this afternoon and hopes to be back by just before or just after christmas break.

It still amazes and horrifies me the number of hearings that are being held. It seems like each morning we hear about a new one. Do suspensions need to be longer? And by longer I mean an automatic minimum of like 10 games? Then on their second offense it's 20, then 30, etc.? I don't know, it just sucks to see

yes, when it comes to CLEAR head shots, they must be longer

someone like neal should've received closer to 20-30 games

thornton closer to 40/regular season

engelland closer to 20-30

etc etc etc

what they are doing now is NOT WORKING

Totally agree. And for someone who loves the sport of hockey as much as I do (note "the sport of hockey" not necessarily "the NHL"), it really sucks.

Maybe we need to see a guy suspended for half a season to help this stuff sink in. People will say we can't do it, that suspension after suspension won't do it. But I think about my twins as an example... They were being cranky and beating on each other, and we told them if they didn't shape up they couldn't go sleep at my parent's house that night - something they were really looking forward to because of the copious spoiling that occurs. Sure enough, they kept up their antics and I wanted so badly to keep warning them and give them another chance, maybe inflict a lesser punishment like taking away a toy or something, but we had to stick to our guns at that point. It sucked calling my mom to cancel and hearing the kids cry because they were looking forward to it (hell, I was looking forward to a peaceful night at home too). But damn, the message got through to the kids.

Now people will say, "it's different talking adults and 4 year olds", but not when the adults are acting like 4 year olds.

:thumbsup:thumbsup

and i don't know about everyone else, but i'm tired of the "previous offender" and how bad the "victim" of a hit is injured actually mattering at all

don't care how long you've been in the league, or what your history is like, if you target and hit a head, you're done for a long time

now i'm not sure if there's something in the current CBA instituted by the NHLPA about a cap or a maximum # of games on suspensions, but if there isn't they are being way too lenient

finally, why does it seem that the NHLPA always appeals and comes to the defense of the offending player? i know that is their right, as a union, to make appeals and what not, but who is speaking up for brooks orpik right now? what about abdelkader? and all the other victims of illegal and dangerous checks?

Not sure about Holtby in the 3rd spot, leaning more towards MAF there (maybe Ward or Scrivens as a long shot) Would be shocked (and disappointed) to see Dion make the team, but injuries have made this a scary possibility. The only 'fault' I see in your forwards is Staal..just not having a great season, but wouldn't surprise me to see him selected when it's all said and done.

Staal is on pace for about 70 points this season, produced at over a point per game last year, and was great in 2010. I don't see how he misses. Plus, he plays for the Hurricanes. So he's putting up nearly a point per game on that team? Put him on a line with Crosby and just sit back and watch the magic happen.

Just my opinion though. He's definitely a fringe player at this point, so I can see the argument either way.

As far as the "C", I think Crosby is the obvious choice, but Toews is the right choice, and I think Canada shocks everyone and goes that way. Maybe that's the homer in me, but I think 19 has done everything to prove that he should be the captain. Crosby might be the more talented offensive player as far as point production, but Toews is everything you want in a leader, and everyone in the hockey world knows it. I think he gets the "C".

Team Canada projection (admittedly very similar to Chris's, but we think alike anyways). I tried to look up the roster I projected last year, but can't find it in last year's thread and I'm too lazy to put too much work into finding it. I don't think this roster has changed too much from the one I made last year.

14 forwards:
Sharp - Crosby - Nash
Benn - Toews - Duchene --
Bergeron - Getzlaf - Perry
Tavares - Giroux - St. Louis
Couture - Kunitz

Probably my favorite line is the second. What a combo of size, skill, and defensive awareness, eh? I stuck Duchene on the right side because I get wood just thinking about Toews feeding Dutch one-timers on his off wing as Benn crashes the net. Sharp on the first line raises eyebrows, but he's used to playing with stars and I think will complement Sid well.

Kunitz is my unpopular choice taking Staal's spot. Not too much of a knock on Staal, and NOT just because he's having a down year. It's more for the fact that Canada is loaded with skilled centers and I think Kunitz adds a nice balanced element on the wing that will also provide some additional sand paper to the roster. Perry, Benn, and even Bergeron (to an extent) play a gritty game, but other than that there's not a lot of bad-assnes, which will be needed in particular against USA. Kunitz can play that type of game, while still contributing offensively. Also, let's not undervalue the extant chemistry he already has with Sid. He could easily slot in on the top line if chemistry becomes an issue.

8 defensemen (this is the fun part for me :)):
Keith - Weber
Bouwmeester - Pietrangelo
Seabrook - Doughty
Vlasic - Phaneuf

I haven't ever been a fan of Bouwmeester until this year. He's playing very well with Pietrangelo, which is the only reason he's on the second pairing. Defensive pairing chemistry is even more important than forward chemistry, and if there's already some extant stuff, it should be considered. If Keith/Weber has issues (I don't think they will though), I wouldn't be opposed to pairing Keith/Seabrook for that very reason.

My final choice on this one was Phaneuf. I refuse to put Subban on my roster by principle. I simply refuse. Biggest reason for going with Phaneuf at this point was just getting another lefty on the roster. Simple as that.

3 goalies
Roberto Luongo
Carey Price
Mike Smith

I think Luongo is the guy for now, with Price backing up. The final slot is a toss-up. Went with Smith for the reason Herb Brooks went with Jim Craig:
Craig Patrick: " You know people I speak to say that Craig's game has been off since his mom died."
Brooks: "They ever see him when his game's on?"
(Obviously stakes aren't as high when you're talking 3rd string goalie, but same principle)

Funny, that's why Dion made my roster too.

I get the Kunitz pick over Staal, but I think Staal has just proven way more over his career and in the Olympics to ignore him.

It hurt to put PK on mine, but I guess I just decided to stop fighting the inevitable. The guy is the reigning Norris winner, as much as that sucks. That's why I didn't put Mike Smith on mine though. God I hate that guy.

Your thoughts on who it should be?

(Also, lulz that we're discussing Canada's 3rd string goalie situation :lol - but hey, hockey talk is hockey talk!)

Again, maybe biased, but I think Smith has the least reasons to justify a spot on the roster. I really hope he doesn't get it.

I think Crawford would have been a lock for #3 had he not been injured.

Basically.

Canada - has been discussed above, no clear #1 and every choice has reason for pause.
USA - With Quick hurt does this fall back to Miller (who's been less than stellar), or Schneider?
Russia - Bob is hurt, Bryz is a huge wild card.
Sweden - Lundquvist hasn't been up to his best, will he turn it around in time for the games? Who do they go to next?

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...I think most of those are manufactured stories.

Sweden - The crease is Hank's. There's no questioning that. Unless he gets injured, it's his.
USA - Miller is next behind Quick. It's insanely hard to be "stellar" as a goaltender for a NHL team that is about as good defensively as your average men's league team. Without him, I don't know if they even have a win this year. They're THAT bad. If it's not Quick, it's Miller. And honestly, I hope it is Miller.
Russia - Ehhh, who cares. They just try to win games 8-6 anyway :lol No but seriously, they do have some questions to answer. I think Bob ends up in net though. He should be more than fine in time for the Olympics.
Canada - This is Bobby Lou's crease, with Price #2. I didn't know there was really any debate about that? #3 is where the debate comes in, and honestly, who gives a shit who #3 is?

Guilty. Puck Daddy put up top 10 games of the year yesterday, with B's game 7 comeback over the Leafs at #1, so I got sucked into that.
