These 2 teams will likely finish 1-2 in the division standings so calling up goons isn't too smart if it means sacrificing performance. The good thing about the Bruins is that our normal line up is very well suited to hold their own even if other teams opt to call up goons.

Kassian isn't a goon. He is expected to be a top-six forward for the Sabres someday. That doesn't mean he is ready for the NHL though and it's true that the Sabres likely won't call him up. I'm just really pumped for when he's ready.

Someone should just run Thomas, all is fair, right?!?

I can't stand either the Sabres or Bruins. Lucic was lying through his teeth about having no intent, and Lindy Ruff is one big whiny baby.

I think we all know the Bruins would handle the situation a little different than Buffalo did, but they can feel free to try.

I would like to see a goalie fight personally. Where is Steve Shields (or Marty Biron although he sucks at fighting) when you need him?

We will see. I'm not expecting any huge brawls but Lindy has shown in the past he isn't scared to throw his goons out there. Although they no longer have Mair, Peters etc. Besides fights though, I also just think it's going to be an exciting game

As I was watching Rangers/Islanders game last night I got to thinking if any other away team gets as many fans as the Rangers do when they play at the Islanders arena? I understand they are literally across the river from each other so of course there will be overlapping fans. But, sometimes I feel there are more Ranger fans than Islanders at the Islanders home game. I also understand that the Islanders are a joke and do not have a lot of fans to begin with. But the dynamic of the game is great, the fans battling with chants, etc. So, does this happen elsewhere? Where the away team has more fans in attendance than the home team?

Notes about the game: The king was mind blowing and Avery is on fire. We took way too many penalties, need to clean that up. Glad to see Richards get the game winning goal. 7 game win streak, boom.

Meh, not yet. I'm sure we will at some point this season, but not yet. The Blackhawks aren't going to want to trade for anyone with more than 2 years left on their contract, and I'm sure Stan Bowman would prefer someone in their last year that wants out from a team that's looking for organizational depth from the youngsters (Evander Kane seems to fit that profile, or Hejduk in Colorado, or maybe Jokinen in Calgary).

But for now, I fully expect to see Ben Smith rejoin the club in Chicago. They want to see exactly what he's capable of. He's in the last year of his contract, played like a top 6 forward during the playoffs in an intense series against the Canucks, and is absolutely tearing up the AHL right now. He'll be up.

I'm sure Bowman will want to see what this team can do without making any moves. If the PP continues to struggle, maybe he'll trade for someone that can QB the PP, but for now, I'm guessing just bringing up Ben Smith will be it.

TMoore4075 11-16-2011 11:53 AM

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

And their playing well so why make a move? Now you can save cap space and bring in a much larger salary later if needed or wanted.

lockman21 11-16-2011 11:59 AM

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

Exactly. There's no hurry.

I love the idea of Ben Smith with Toews and Hossa, and Carcillo with Kane and Sharp. Disgusting top 6.

Olesz sucked and was a waste of a roster spot and cap space. He's not good enough to play on a NHL roster. Just isn't. And Bowman/Wirtz have shown that they aren't afraid to eat a huge contract for the good of the parent club (Cristobal Huet, anyone?). It's not necessarily indicative of a move happening now, but I would be shocked if one didn't happen later if the Hawks were struggling at some point.

Now we just need to send John Scott down to the AHL and bring up Jeremy Morin. Shit would get ridiculous real fast.

Bron Yr Aur 11-16-2011 12:09 PM

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

Guessing the only move would be to bring up Ben Smith. Seems to be a much more useful player than Olesz. Or perhaps Jeremy Morin if he is fully healthy?

The Hawks are about $7m below the cap without Olesz, but between his and Huet's contracts, and the front-loaded deals to Hossa and Keith, Wirtz is still spending more than the cap on player salaries.

Probably not going to send down John Scott with Seabrook hurt, though. Plus, they seem to be performing better with him in the lineup (maybe in spite of his presence, but still...) and opposing teams are unlikely to take runs at guys like Kane and Toews and Frolik and Kruger because nobody wants to fight him.

My money is on seeing Tropp next week. He's up in his spot for tonights game. Sounds like there's a slight chance Hecht will be back next week too. They seem very content with leaving Kassian down in the minors and letting him really develop. Same goes for Foligno.

Leaving in an hour for Buffalo for the game, I love student discount night. $20 tickets are always awesome.

Smith will be brought up before Morin. Smith is outperforming everyone in Rockford, has the Canucks series on his resume and is in the last year of his deal. The Hawks want to see what this kid can do, and this is the last year they can. He'll be joining the squad at some point during this road trip.

Also, Seabs should be back soon, so sending down Scott should be a possibility. I still don't quite understand what his role is. People just avoid him now. He doesn't fight because no one will fight him. Guys around the league have said they just continue to play their game and just don't fight Scott. He doesn't keep anyone in check because people just refuse to fight him now. He serves no real purpose.

Yep, it does. The way him and Kane have been connecting has been great, especially lately.

The guy has the skills and tools to be a top 6 forward, he just needs to not be a moron.

So far, I'm very happy with that signing. And if you backread my comments on when we signed him, I would be the last person to admit that unless he actually has been producing. And he has.

Exciting game so far. Surprised that the shots are so low through 2 periods because each team has had some great chances. Hawks defense misses Seabrook. Basically playing 5 d-men with Scott getting a rare shift and your 5th d-man is Lepisto. They've done a pretty respectable job all things considered, but the Nucks have had a ton of 2-on-1's. Just a good hockey game.

Definitely the most satisfying wins of the year. It was definitely a lot closer than it looked, though. The defense and Crawford deserve a ton of praise tonight. No Seabrook, basically 5 defensemen, they were stuck in their own zone for long shifts in each period...yet they got it done. Huge, enormous play by Hossa to get that 2 goal lead after the Canucks were pressing hard in the 3rd.

I think he'll be a very good shut down d-man, but I'm not sure he really has great offensive talent. I could be totally off base but that's just based off of the games I've seen him play against the Bruins and the playoffs the past couple years.

When he came into the league it was his offensive acumen that won him the Calder trophy. For a 6'8 player he was an awesome skater. Since then he is added about 20 pounds to become a more physical player and that seems to have effected his offensive game. If he can learn to play with his new weight he can still be a very good offensive player.

Crazy finish to that one, must've been very exciting for the Flyers fans in attendance.

Also, Caps lose again. 3-6-1 since that 7-0 start.

Calgayry tomorrow. I hate losing to them more than Vancouver because at least I know Vancouver is supposed to be a good team. Calgayry sucks.

This could definitely be a tough game for the Hawks. Brent Seabrook likely out again tonight (and probably tomorrow, too). Frolik out, as well. That's 2 important members of the PK.

Excited to see Ben Smith get his first start of the season, playing with Bolland tonight.

No he can come here instead. Red Wings need a wake-up and I love the thought of him with Datsyuk.

Don't worry about Iginla guys, he'll be playing in the Eastern Conference for the Bruins pretty soon.

Wings and Bruins could afford him at the trade deadline, definitely. Wings have nearly $5m in space.

That would make sense, if this were the last year of his contract.

The Bruins would be idiotic to trade for him since he still is owed $7 million next year. They're losing half their team and would only have $8 million left to fill out a roster. No way that's happening.

I don't want him anymore.

It doesn't really matter, IMO, because Rocky is not going up the cap this year and then also paying Olesz & Huet $8m+ while they play in the minors/Europe.

I wouldn't mind Doan but it looks like PHX will be in the playoff race all year and can't afford to ship him out.

It's only November, and you people are already talking about the trade deadline. Who are you guys, Eklund?

:lol To say the least. Crawford and the defense were the opposite of the way they were against Van. Some serious face-palm moments to start the 2nd period. If only the entire team would play the entire game with the fire of Toews and Keith.

Hey fellas, sorry for the disappearance - just got back from hockey-less Singapore.

Iginla and Doan aren't going anywhere unless they're pushing 40 and want to pull a Bourque and take a crack at the Cup. Other than that, I don't see them going anywhere. The fact that a guy like Doan hasn't already begged his way out of Phoenix says a lot.

This^ And as for it not being the last year of his contract the Wings have money coming off the books next year so they could handle it for next season too. Do they do it? I dunno. I doubt Iginla leaves though.

Bruins could pull it off, not that I think they will. Krejci would likely be in the deal so that's more money off the cap. We would then move Seguin to center between Iginla and Lucic, and Horton would play the wing on the Bergeron Marchand line. And the guys that are becoming FA's are Kelly, Campbell, Paille, Thornton, Boychuk, Corvo, Rask, and Krejci if he somehow isn't traded for Iginla. None of those guys besides Rask and Krjeci will get anything more than 2.5 million. But this is probably not gonna happen anyway.
Edit: And Cap Geek also has Savard's salary included which could be moved to LTIR and his cap hit wouldn't count. Which is what happened last year. He stays on the cap until we go over and then he can be moved to LTIR.
