The fact that they can even play 162 times emphasizes this.

Yeah catching is the one position where I think it could be tough. Pitching a game can be tough but if you're a starter you then get a few days off. But I mean you could in theory stand in the outfield and not see a ball your way for a couple innings in theory. Even the NBA, which while it's not as physical as the 80's or early 90's, is still more physical. I'm with you on the 162 games. If it was so grueling, they wouldn't play that many games. I'm guessing they could afford to cut some when you look at all the empty seats at a lot of games in April and May.

Again, not trying to minimize what they do but sorry getting all crazy and spraying champagne for just making the playoffs and then for each round?

Come on guys, don't feed the Napoleon Complex stereotype hockey fans have with petty mocking of baseball. Seriously.

Oh come on buddy, we're just having fun.

I watch VERY little baseball (to be precise, this season I watched four innings total: 9 thru 12 of this year's WS), so as I was watching, I was reminded just how talented baseball players are at their sport. It really is a game of intricacies, and I'm impressed with how they can perform.

However, that doesn't mean I have to enjoy watching it. I was bored out of my mind. Definitely the only way to watch baseball is while you're doing something else.

Lets be honest here when it comes to levels of grueling...

Round 1 Seven Game Series NHL > Entire post season MLB.

That is why it is weird that they celebrate everything in baseball. The Wild Card is only one game. The first round only goes 5 at most. You just can't compare this to the NHL having 4 seven game series to win the cup

This is another that seems weird to me about MLB. They pack the regular season with as many games as they can possibly fit, and then when they finally get to their playoff games (i.e. the ones casual sports fans will be interested in), they cut it to best of 5 for the first round. Seems odd.

Hell, there used to only be 5 games for the league championship series and that was the "first round."

By no means was I saying that baseball isn't a tough sport and they do have an extremely long season. But, as others have said, the NHL postseason is just as (probably more) "grueling". I believe it is a lot harder to advance rounds in NHL postseason than MLB.

In the end, it doesn't matter. Just looks stupid to me. Celebrate in private, as I am sure all teams of other sports do when they advance rounds. Save the big televised celebration for when you win it all.

kev87lads 11-02-2015 11:19 AM

Re: The NHL Thread

I hate the champagne and over celebration of players and teams after each round in baseball. After the LCS and WS is fine. But anything before is ridiculous. Would say the same about all the other sports as well.

And to be fair about the trophy presentation from last night. It was inside because the visiting team won and they do it that way for safety purposes now I believe. In hockey, it's harder for a fan to get on the ice whereas baseball the whole stadium is wide open.

To go with what Tim said above, baseball didn't have any rounds of the playoffs outside of the World Series until about 1969. A team from the National and American Leagues had to win their respective league in the regular season to make the World Series. I would imagine that's one of the reasons that the regular season has so many games.

The Wild Card/Divisional Series round wasn't introduced until the mid-1990's, and many "purists" thought that much was sacrilegious. Baseball's long history and resistance to change are reasons for its seemingly odd postseason.

Nice way to end the Kings winning streak. Same old story, Toews and Kane netting goals and setting up others to secure a comeback win.

Bickell shipped to the UFA, Dano brought up.

Woman who accused Kane or rape signed a statement declining to prosecute citing stress. Pretty sure this will not to to a grand jury now much less a trial: http://www.foxsports.com/nhl/story/c...gations-110315

So as we talk about a winning franchise, not the Jackets, Olympia Entertainment announced a few things about the new arena.

Probably won't be able to get tickets to the home opener, unless at a huge mark-up, cause you know they'll make it as only part of season ticket packages or some crap, but I'll be at one of the first ones for sure.

Actually the Caps didn't look completely awful last night. Inept and perhaps a bit of nervousness since MSG has been ugly to them. But the fact is for long stretches, probably even the majority of the game, they were the better team. But they had no confidence as a team last night and far too many sloppy moments. Unfortunately, the Rangers had the confidence and took advantage of the opportunities they got big time. Holtby had a shaky game and Henrik badly outplayed him. But there were bright spots for the Caps. Ovie had a good game. Burakovsky had a few chances. John Carlson has continued to impress and both Dimitry Orlov and Nate Schmidt have started really putting in solid minutes. Obviously last night wasn't ideal and the Caps were definitely sloppy, but it wasn't like the Rangers took em to the house anywhere other than the scoreboard. I mean the Caps outshot the Rangers 14-2 in the second and got outscored 2-1. So sometimes shit happens.

Obviously I am only joking around with you. Caps are for real this year. Just glad to know the Rangers are still pretty good themselves and can still win big games against some of the hotter teams in East.

No one will be surprised if it comes down to these two teams meeting in the playoffs again.

The last thing I want to do is reply to a post of yours about Patrick Kane, but I have add this:

If he goes on to sue her in a civil case, the results and the evidence in the criminal case are open to the public. Kane doesn't want that to happen, and I even think his lawyer even said there won't be a course of action with regards to the victim.

Negative: It is early November, regular season champion doesn't mean anything, I have not been to a game yet.

Negative: Score more goals dammit! You still need to score some goals to win games. Being near the bottom of the league in Goals For is disturbing when Crosby, Malkin and Kessel are on your team.

Positives: The 10-3 record. That's a great start and those are important. Evgeny Kuznetsov, seemingly in the midst of a real breakout season. The way Oshie and Williams have fit in. The play of the top 6 overall. Nate Schmidt and Dimitry Orlov. John Carlson.

Negatives: The power play over the last three weeks. While I'm confident they'll snap out of it, it is ugly right now. Braden Holtby has been strong, but the tiniest bit inconsistent and the Rangers game wasn't great for him. Speaking of, the Rangers game was a big negative so far. They came in rolling but still seemed a little overwhelmed at the Garden.

I'd say 87% positive so far and 13% negative for the Caps.

For my team:

Negatives....can't score and have trouble at times giving up too many shots.

Positive...they are only 2 points out of 2nd in the Atlantic and aren't healthy yet and haven't been 100% yet this season. Pavel is back in a week to week and a half. Stay at this distance and I think they'll be just fine. Also the goaltending has been great..pretty much as expected. Sadly Howie took a knee to the head yesterday and had to leave the game. Haven't heard an update on him yet.

Oh so you guys see this shit going down in Flint with the Firebirds? Whole team walked out, through down jerseys and everything, after the coaches were fired. One of the players that "quit" was the owners own son.

I just saw about that. That's nuts. From what I understand the lack of ice time for the owner's son is the reason the coaches were fired. Then the kid joins the team in the walkout. Crazy stuff.

Re: The NHL Thread

Positives: First and foremost Patrick Kane is off to an amazing start - last night he had a goal and 3 assists which makes him the NHL leader in points and goals while being second by 1 in assists. Panarin seems to have just fit right in, great addition. Penalty killing unit is doing very well. Nice to see Hossa back last night as well.

Negatives: Crawford is hit or miss, sometimes nothing gets by the guy but other times (like against the Blues) he can blow it for us. Power play could use a little work and we need to limit the stupid penalties that do not benefit the Hawks. TVR is like Crawford, up or down. Toews has to step it up more. Still counting the days until Keith returns to lessen the burden on the other defenders - happy to see he has begun skating drills though, hopefully he will be back and hungry sooner than anyone thought.

Datsyuk skated with the top line today. Not ready for tomorrow but sure looks to be closer.

Puck Daddy has a great write-up on Fedorov being inducted to the HHOF.

Forgot he won the Hart and the Selke in the same season.

LA Kings:

Positive - Came back and fixed an awful start and are now 1st in the pacific. Finally scoring some goals consistently. Carter/Toffoli line doing it again.
Negatives - Dustin Brown and Marian Gaborik:BANG:BANG:BANG

That's crazy. Hockey parents are the worst. This is something you do in pee-wee hockey, not the OHL.

In fact, Gruden expressed concerns about potential family conflicts during his hiring process, but was given assurances by Nilsen that he would not meddle.
just a shitty situation for coaches and players.

Oilers:
++: They can and do compete with a lot of top level teams.
--: Compete =/= wins. Also, Connor McDavid's broken collarbone is a huge negative.

That story about Flint is bananas!!

He dominated that year. I still think he could have been better while here. He didn't bring it every night. You would see him at times dominate a team by himself and then would be nowhere the next game.

It ended badly here when he walked away from $10mil a year to stay with the Wings. You kinda new he was gonna bolt after the offer sheet from the Canes in 98. Ownership and fans were pretty pissed. They never really got over it until the Winter Classic when he came back and played the alumni game. I've heard people say he should have retired a Wing and his career went downhill after he left. The last part is true. He could have kept his career going staying here with guys like Datsuk and Zetterberg. The problem is though, he would have been here past the lockout of 05. They wouldn't have been able to keep him with a huge cap hit. Maybe feelings wouldn't have been hurt as much but he would have been bought out in the summer of 05. Things worked out just fine for the Wings.

What do they do now with the coaches back? The league is gonna question everything the owner does and the coaches have to keep looking over their shoulders. I can't say I'd want to come back to that situation if I was the coach.

While true, Sergei has said many times he enjoyed his time as a Cap greatly and that hockey hadn't been "fun" since he left Detroit until he got to Washington. I know he was only there for like two years but he had a big impact on the team and fanbase. Plus his final NHL goal will always be an all time favorite of mine.

Basically, <3 Federov <3

Re: The NHL Thread

Positives: MacKinnon is officially over his slump from last season. Landeskog is rounding out to be one of the best all-around players in the league. Jack Skille has been everything they'd hoped he'd be as a bottom 6 energy player. Reto Berra is better than last year.

Negatives: Everything else. A lot of good talent on this team, but not much fight. I don't know if it's lack of confidence, a bad system, or what. But this team is too talented to play this way. The swagger of two seasons ago is completely gone.

Reading some posts from Adrian Dater, who's pretty dialed in with the team. Says he's heard Avs are asking around about both Varlamov and Duchene (not surprised by the latter). The Avs are going on a 7-game road trip, and Dater is saying the team is planning for a shake-up if things don't at least start to turn around during the trip. Roy's job, again according to Dater, is safe. Hmm.

Also, if things don't turn around (and maybe even if they do), he's expecting Iggy to be gone at the deadline to a contender. This wouldn't surprise me.

Of course, reporters talk. Who knows.

Wings scored sorta.... Toronto actually wanted to review something but then said it was inconclusive but it was in the net just not a shot that showed 100%.

So with the Lightning losing to the Sabres, Wings are now 3rd in the Atlantic. With 4 wins in 5 games they have as many wins in 5 games as the Jackets have all year. But hey....Corsi. ;-)

Forrest that. Sens couldn't keep the puck out of their own net so Wings are 2nd. 😀
