Re: The NHL Thread (lolcaps)
It's going to be a tough tight and competitive race for the #1 seed in the metro/#1 overall. That spot is actually very huge in terms of playoffs standings. The way it currently stands the WC2 is going to be not a very good team, seeing as 5/6 points separates the last place team in the East and WC2. Also the #2 in the Metro is going to have a very tough opponent round 1

Saw a similar stat in a tweet earlier. 4th place in the other 3 divisions on pace for 90/91 while the Metro 4th place finisher around 110.

Re: The NHL Thread (lolcaps)
With how good the metro is and the current playoff format, besides 1st in the metro, the best places to finish in the East are WC1 and either 2nd or 3rd in the Atlantic.
That's silly. |

Re: The NHL Thread (lolcaps)
Red Wings are so fucking stupid. Three straight OT losses. Just...fucking....lose. I don't want some freaking moral victory by getting close to the playoffs. Again I'm starting to question the coaching. How do you come out and play as shitty as you did in the first period? Not like this team is all rookies, it's got a decent mix age-wise so no reason for this.

lol Wings keep losing in OT, and Tim keeps getting more and more pissed off about it.

Meanwhile, I'm over here laughing at the fact that the Avs haven't won a game since Jan. 6.

And with the way the standings are, who knows where anyone will finish. So it might be important to finish 1st but as of now it's a bit of a clusterfuck. |

The commercial for the All Star game with players saying movie quotes is un-fucking-bearable.

Re: The NHL Thread (lolcaps)
That's how you lose a game Red Wings. Don't kid yourselves you aren't that good (actually I think they are better than their record but it just ain't happening this year) so trade what you can and get assets. Start to lose, trade Tatar or Nyquist for a D-man, trade Vanek for picks, trade Brendan Smith for whatever you can get and maybe the same for Jurc and see if anyone wants Ott or Miller on the 4th line. Draft a d-man high (hopefully) in the draft and then Vegas takes Howard and Kronwall retires and then sign Shattenkirk. Now you've made yourself a lot better. If after that, you are still struggling next season, time to fire Blash. Mickey Redmond was talking post game yesterday that he doesn't understand how a coach should have to get guys ready to play a game. Half way through the game the Wings just looked like they didn't care. That's how I feel too. I mean you are professionals you shouldn't need someone to get you pumped up on a nightly basis. I get you might get guys who just don't have it some nights cause it's 82 games but it's happening way too often with this group.

I think, whenever the day comes that Tim doesn't complain about the Red Wings, is the day that this thread gets shut down for good.

As for the Av's - they are such a mess up and down I have no clue what their front office is trying to accomplish except maybe a high draft pick so I cannot even predict whether they will be buyers or sellers! Quote:
One last thing, I know it rarely comes up but it always annoys me when a guy gets a ten minute misconduct (say for yelling at a ref or something not really game related) but the team does not get shorthanded at all. AT the very least they should be assessed a 2 minute bench minor similar to too many men on the ice or the fans throwing shit on the ice after repeated warnings. |
Re: The NHL Thread (lolcaps)
Varly shut down for the season with his groin injury. I think this + poor play + high cap hit pretty much makes him untradeable. Oh well, it was a nice thought...

his numbers are quite underwhelming, but there was some chatter about him being a decent fit with the Penguins. his best +/- season was a +5 and he's been a minus more often than not. but he's a right handed shot which is nice & he is a big boy. not sure how he moves the puck though. |

I think Johnson's numbers are not the best indicator of his game, especially playing for a defensively poor team like the Avalanche. I think many take for granted just how good he is. I mean, the Avs D was bad before he went down with an injury this year... and look at them now. Pros: He's got the technical skills of a good defenseman: skating, positioning, etc. He's a great skater for his size. Rarely gets caught out of position. Decent shot. Works well on the PP and is an above-average penalty killer. His greatest asset, IMO, is his breakout passes: he sees the ice EXCEPTIONALLY well, especially from deep in his zone, and almost always makes the correct choice for the breakout. His passes from his own zone are always crisp and effective. That's an underrated skill for a defenseman in today's NHL. He's a top pairing defenseman. Cons: Not overly physical for his size. He'll check, but would love to see more nastiness from him - doesn't make people pay the price to be in front of the net. Doesn't use his shot enough, tending to defer to someone like Barrie on the PP. He's not particularly mobile with the puck, but I don't know if I'd list that as a con because his breakout passes usually negate the need to move much with it. Young defensemen really need to be in the right environment. I think him being traded at a young age to a non-defensively sound team like the Avs could have hindered his progression. He's solid, but I think he can be better under the right circumstances. That being said, he's about all the Avs have back there right now and I would be REALLY surprised if they moved him. |
