I guess that's what happens when you completely ignore all defensive and goaltending aspects of the game. |

And from what I'm reading, Buff wanted more term, so the Jets had to pay more to get him to come down to 5 years. |

Another four points tonight. He now has a goal in seven consecutive games, tying Kane for the longest such streak this season. It's damn fun to watch! |

big-ish move (if anything the Leafs do is "big") |
Re: The NHL Thread
Big in terms of getting rid of the money. Didn't even make it a year with Babs.

Re: The NHL Thread
Good hockey trade for both clubs. Wouldn't be surprised to see Phaneuf do better in Toronto where the spotlight will not be squarely on him and where he won't be relied on to be the #1 guy.
And while it might be better to split them up, Phaneuf and Karlsson could - in theory - be a really effective pairing. Very complementary skill sets. Wouldn't be surprised to see some of the roster players Toronto got go at the deadline, where it's looking like the Leafs are going to have a garage sale. |
Re: The NHL Thread
Matty, i'm glad you're here. i have a question for you. i'm going to link a highlight video from last night's pens-ducks game but i'm interested in 1 play in particular...on the right side of the video, click on the highlight that says "PIT-Save at 19:06 of the 3rd period, Fleury on Corey Perry"
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/l...r/game/1553800 that was a pretty brutal collision and i'm wondering if there can be high-sticking called when it is perpetrated against a goalie? because it was the stick of Corey Perry that sent his mask flying off. seems like a dangerous play (but clearly unintentional) |

There is leniency in this penalty, however, for unintentional/unavoidable contact. Examples of this usually include normal wind-up for a slap shot, or commotion between centers during a face off. So there is room for a ref to make a judgement call if he feels the high stick contact was unintentional, but also unavoidable (if JUST unintentional, you still want to call a penalty and use it as a teaching moment; especially with younger players). I'm guessing Perry wasn't penalized here because of how tangled up Perry was with the defensemen as they were going to the net. Probably fulfills the requirement of unintentional and unavoidable, at least for the in-the-moment judgement of the ref. I probably also would've not called a penalty, FWIW. EDIT: Watched the play again and he wasn't really tangled up with the defensemen; it's more like he went into traffic jam in front of the net and got tripped up over something. Even so, I think the stick went up as a result of him falling, so my opinion still stands. |
