Anyone else hear about the Simmonds incident during the Flyers/ Wings shootout tonight in London, ON? Apparently as he was coming in for his shot someone through a banana at him. F'n classless.

Hearing about the Simmonds incident sickened me. As a hockey fan, I'm embarrassed.

I find it hilarious, then again I am picturing something cartoonish in my mind and he still managed to score.

Hence my use of the word "cute". Now that they don't have to pay him or have them on their roster? "Sure, we LOVE Mike Modano!!!!"

It is a nice gesture, to be sure. But I don't think it can be denied that the Stars definitely saw this to make a big PR move. The Stars organization needs it right now.

As a hockey fan, a human being and a person from London I feel terrible. I've seen Simmonds play here all the time when he was in junior and never had anything like this happen. It is disgrace.

Agreed, but I still think Modano made a mistake by going to the Wings last year. That last big contract he signed with the Stars, the whole point of it was that he was gonna spend the rest of his career with that team. He made a rather big deal of it at the time.

Wonder how I'd feel differently about Modano today if the Stars had been allowed to move to San Jose in 1991...

Simmonds even said Canada is pretty much the last place he'd expect to hear any sort of racism.

Yeah but he wanted to play one more year and they said they didn't "have a spot for him" on a rebuilding team. He's not the type of player you say that to imo. Wings would never have done that to Steve Yzerman. Joe and the Stars are just trying to save face now. Wonder if they would have liked him around late in the year to help out the young kids when they choked away that playoff spot.

In hindsight, Modano may feel the same way after the injuries and healthy scratches he dealt with on the Wings. But at the same time, he still had the desire to play so he went for it. I can't imagine walking away from something that has literally been there your WHOLE life. We have a family friend who had a long minor-league career, and when he retired at 40 he literally had no idea what to do with himself. He'd played hockey since he was 5, left home at 14 to play on travel and other junior teams, and therefore had never had any other work or college experience. He was pretty lost for a while (as an aside, he's now a plumber :)).

Obviously, Modano could probably get a front office job with any team in the league if he still wanted to work (he wouldn't have to resort to plumbing), but I guess the point I'm making is its tough to walk away from something that's always been there, and if Modano felt he still had something left, he had to at least give it a go instead of playing the "what if" game. If Dallas wouldn't take him back, why not give it one more go with a team that's a perrenial contender and provided him a chance to get one more Cup.

Yeah I'm sure he might be second guessing it now. But if that skate didn't come up and slash his wrist, at a game I was at in Columbus, it might have been a different year. Now looking back I wish he had walked away too and he came to my team but at the time I was psyched he was coming here.

True. Yeah, Dallas should have found room for him after all he gave them. And I'm sure last year didn't go anywhere close to the way he envisioned it. For the record, though I hated what he always did to the Sharks (I can still vividly see him flying coast-to-coast solo to score a back-breaking goal against SJ in a playoff game at the Tank) I have always respected how he played the game.

I'm obviously just joining the redundancy of this at this point, but I feel the need to say something.

The Simmonds thing is disgusting and pathetic. Ontario should be embarrassed.

Totally forgot about our fantasy draft. I have soccer until 8 so I should be back by 830 for the live draft but I haven't done any research/scouting etc etc. Going to try to mess around with my pre-draft rankings in case I'm late to the ball, but I officially have zero hopes for having a decent draft and season :BANG Getting to the finals for a 3rd straight year doesn't seem likely.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

I've got my fantasy draft tonight, too. It's a keeper league. I'll have the 3rd open pick. The guys not kept are dats, Thornton, Staal, Heatley, Iginla, Zetterberg. Leaning towards Staal or Heatley cause I think Dats will be gone. I wanted Iginla originally to complete my top line (I'm keeping nash and getzlaf), but the back spasms scare me. After keeping Peyton Manning and then he had the 2nd surgery, im gun shy to take on a risk like Iggy. Any thoughts?? Thanks.

I see you guys got a league going so I won't ask for anyone sleepers.

Man, I'm loving Brendan Shanahan's videos on the recent suspensions. Not only does it give the fans an insight into what factors influenced the decision, it also keeps him honest as he hands out the suspensions, knowing he'll have to explain it to the world. Just what the league needs, Shanahan so far has proven to be far and away the right guy for the job.
