I really hope that there is someone close to Boyd that he trusts that can get him to realize what a bad idea this is. You don't sit in with a tribute band for your OG band that you were dismissed from.

Sure, it's a fall from grace. But the guy may just be a musician at heart and wants to play the music that he loves. Who cares who he's on stage with?

maybe this is the first step in a very long meta project whereby first boyd joins, then stefan is dismissed from DMB and joins DMTB, then carter "retires" from DMB and joins the tribute band, then finally dave quits DMB but joins DMTB, and then it comes out that this was the best way they could think of to get rid of rashawn, jeff, and tim without hurting their feelings.

Heh, this is cute.

Reminds me of a band I was into many years ago called In Flames. They're one of those weird Ship of Theseus bands where their first release and their latest release share no common members. Anyway, a new band just formed last year called The Halo Effect, and all the members of it used to be in In Flames at one point. They sound more like In Flames than newer In Flames, haha.

i dont want to victim shame here, but i always thought boyd got a bad deal in this me too movement.
seems there was a bit of boyd getting taken advantage of / used then thrown out and discarded in a unmoral, but not illegal scenario.
dave wanted boyd out for years.
the whole thing was just ugly for all parties involved but everyone deserves the right to reconcile with their past and make amends/acceptance.

maybe this is another step in his growth
and while this is in no way a plan at all, but IF he were to join a band like this, who cares?
the Beach Boy members all have their own bands now even while the "original" is touring

Maybe Boyd is done hiding what he was

If I was him, Id come out with guns blazing tonight and drop a podcast tomorrow revealing a tell all of the last decade of the turbulant DMB years from his side

I actually know next to nothing when it comes to the '18 saga of Boyd. All I know is that he's no longer in the band and he got hit with some sexual allegations from Crystal Garden.

That being said... every time I look up "why is Boyd not in DMB", the answer is always "He was ousted after he got hit with sexual allegations from Crystal Garden". The way that the answer is always framed is that Boyd did some shit and DMB dropped him, but the two incidents could be completely unrelated for all I know.

So did the Crystal Garden thing just give DMB a really really good excuse to drop him?

Hadn't some people said that everyone was surprised that Boyd showed up for the Concert for Charlottesville? The impression I got was that he was out for a while before the Crystal Garden stuff came out, and it was mostly just an unfortunate coincidence that Boyd made the announcement at the same time as the allegations. At most, perhaps the imminent release of that lawsuit may have been the prompt to make public his departure from the band, which had already been decided months prior.

I'm still curious to know everything that went into his departure, which will likely never be known. They had stated when announcing the 25th anniversary tour in 2016 that they would be taking a break in 2017, and with the scrapping of the 2015/2016 studio sessions with Cavallo, I can't help but wonder if it was known as far back as early 2016 that Boyd would not be staying with the band. Give him the 25th anniversary tour as his last one, and then cut him loose.

He will play all his original parts with his longest pubes.

He was forced to leave before those allegations came to light. I'm not privy to all the details, but word is he was forced out in 2017 and the band was surprised he showed up at the CVille benefit concert.

My theory is that Boyd was becoming a liability. Maybe for drugs, substance issues, whatever. And a combination of that and his declining ability to play professionally on stage. Although in 2016, he actually didn't sound too bad. But he has ups and downs as we all know.

So the other guys in the band were treating Boyd like Melvin from Office Space and hoped the situation would play itself out, if that were true. Sounds almost spineless.

wasnt that the show where he kissed dave at the end also? haha what a night. they are shocked that he shows up when hes no longer in the band and then lays a smacker on dave. its all really just too funny. imagine that vibe backstage before hand. dave probably walked off the stage at the end like "wtf! get me outta here, what the hell is going on here tonight?"

If he shows up sober, and plays his ass off, sounds great, and there's a nice crowd....than good for him. If he's falling over, nodding off, playing Dreams of Our Father in front of 4 people like he was 4 years ago? Horrible look.

that whole part of the bands timeline is completely off the wall. i do believe though, with all things being equal, that the band knew boyd was gonna play that night and maybe in their minds it was the final send off for him. charity hometown show, and then move on without him from there. if he wasnt supposed to be there, they wouldnt have had a rig for him on stage, and honestly they could have had him removed without the confrontation and not in the public view. one call on the radio once they had wind he was in the building and it could have been handled. so im not buying into he just showed up unexpectedly and they raced to get his rig set and put on the fake smiles.

but anyhow, how was the best friends wife? any memory of it at all?

I find it hard to believe that the band was surprised by Boyd playing the gig. But I bet there's folks just outside the circle who had heard Boyd was out of the band prior to this show, and they were surprised to then see Boyd on stage (just as surprised as most of us were to see Butch)

I'm also curious about this period. Between the sessions being scrapped, and the announcement of a 2017 break, I certainly think it's possible 2016 was planned to be Boyd's last tour. Being at the Sunday show at the Gorge that year, I felt some emotional energy from Boyd. And watching back on the DVD release (LT44) I can see it. Could've just been due to it being the final show of the year + the year off.
