Re: The NHL 2013-14 Thread

The reason Canada won was first and foremost because they had, by far, the best talent in the competition. It would have been a huge disappointment had they not won the Gold. The US had maybe 2 forwards (probably only Kane though) who would have made that team. Russia maybe has Ovechkin, Malkin, and Datsyuk and a d group that isn't even in the same discussion as Canada's....

Shit, Canada beat Sweden, who iced Marcus. Kruger. :rolleyes

one of the headlines on CBJ's website right is BOBROVSKY! Back on the case!

:lol I love that they're embracing that

Let's calm down....Canada beat the US by a whopping score of 1-0.

It wasn't that close though. It never felt, at least to me, that the US was going to score. Canada played that well defensively.

Agreed. They may as well have been ahead by three goals at that point.

It's not even that the US played poorly, it's just that Canada was much, much better.

It wasn't until the Bronze medal game that our boys decided they didn't even want to be there any more.

And fucking dominated every second of that game. If the score was reflective of the game itself it would be 10-0.

the US had their best scoring chance in the first minute of the game, that Kessel semi-breakaway.

Agreed. Wonder what happens if they score there. Probably not a lot. Canada's game plan probably wouldn't have changed unless they were still down 1-0 with less than 5 minutes to go or so.

So with the topic of course coming up, you think the NHL takes part in 2018? I have a feeling they won't. Seems to be more negative stuff out there than in years past following the Olympics. Plus it's Korea. Doesn't quite have the same number of NHLers as Russia.

I have a feeling it''s going to get really ugly between the Russia Federation and the NHL. Russia will undoubtedly want to compete in 2018 after their lackluster performance in Sochi.

And in 2010, 2006 and really 2002 as well. Even though they did get bronze there.

The KHL and NHL have always sort of had a gentleman's agreement...I have a feeling that's not going to be so gentlemanly.

No, but as Chris mentioned--the NHL and KHL are on semi-okay terms. It got tested a few times in the last two years as the NHL was unsure whether to bring their players over to Sochi, and the Russian players telling their owners they were going anyway.

Of course, the worst was probably when that KHL team offered Malkin a contract in 2008.

And whoops, Kovalchuk. How could I forget?

Has the Callahan for St Louis rumor been touched on in here?

Would be a steal for the rangers. As much as I love my captain, his contract demands are too much for my taste given his style of play.

Re: The NHL 2013-14 Thread

For the Lightning to trade St. Louis at this point (with them being poised to make the playoffs and perhaps actually make some noise), they would have to get fair, immediate return for St. Louis. Draft pics, future considerations, etc. are not as important as a guy who can take his place. I can see this trade potentially happening, but who knows. "Insiders" love to pounce on every morsel of rumor they can find around this time of year. Fun to speculate, though.

With another St. Louis tie (this time the city, not the player), I've read a rumbling or two of Callahan for Chris Stewart.

Stastny's name still seems to pop up on the lists of insiders, although the Avs have kind of backed down it sounds like. Just read an interview with Roy where he said to not expect much from them at the deadline because they like the direction they are going.

Still wouldn't mind a defenseman to help out if the price was right. At this point, it would appear the Avs primary trade bait is PA Parenteau. BUT, with the announcement that Tanguay is done for the year, they might want to hold on to him.

I really need to read better. Read that as TO St Louis. Damn it Marty don't have a last name like that.

I would not trade St Louis for Callahan unless you can sign him too. Even saying that, you are a trading away a big part of your team while you are in the middle of a playoff push. I don't know if you want to rock the boat.

As far as my team goes, they need help on the blueline. Hemsky gets talked about every year at this time and the Wings are always mentioned. I just don't see why he's needed. You'd have to give something up to get him and is he better than any of the young guys coming up? Would love a top 4 dman to solidify that. I like the top 3 but after that it's a pretty big drop-off.

See I was the opposite. While it sucks to lose Zetterberg, they are gaining Franzen and Weiss back. Those 2 weeks were helpful. That's 6-8 games they didn't have to play waiting for those guys.

I would agree. If I'm Tampa, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. They're a contender as it is this year so I don't see why they make the deal, especially with Stamkos returning.

For the rangers, it gives them another legit scorer and would be very interesting to watch heading into the playoffs.

I just prefer the rangers end up dealing Callahan at this point. I don't want to give him 6/42 with the specter of signing Girardi in the offseason. I feel girardi's more important to this team going forward.

Totally agree, which is why I mentioned they would have to get immediate return. You can't just replace St. Louis on the ice or in the room, but if they are going to trade him, getting a character guy like Callahan could help ease the transition.

Yeah, but your NHL team of choice puts a respectable product on the ice to cheer for. I don't share in that luxury.
