NBC Sports chairman apparently wants players to shave their playoff beards. While I can at least understand his point, obviously this is the worst idea ever

That is hilariously stupid.

TV guy in marketing wants to increase player marketability... color me surprised.

It's not a dumb idea, but hockey players will never go for it. I have zero issues with a guy stating an idea about growing the sport. Not worth getting upset over unless they actually tried forcing it on players.

Re: The NHL Thread

hockey beards are a tradition and in fact make a player more marketable.

do you think anyone gives a shit about birdman what's his face who was on the miami heat a year ago? No. but that dude had so many god damn tattoos he was indistinguishable from everyone else.

Re: The NHL Thread

Some of these "babies" can't even grow a beard and so it barely factors. How does it matter anyway. What a moron. Same guy probably wants facemasks removed from football so you can see the player's faces.

Yeah saw that on PTI last night. Pointed out the LeBron and Richard Sherman among others have beards and does it stop them from being marketable? Not quite.

The only difference is it's easier to market football and basketball players in this country regardless of stuff like beards

I really can understand why this TV exec feels the way he does. But I don't think it's a good idea. Playoff beards are such a thing in hockey. Plus the players would absolutely never agree to it.

I get it from his point of view for wanting it. But actually asking for it and thinking the NHL, NHLPA or the players in general would go for it?? Maybe I could see the NHL thinking "hmmm" but at the same time you can't legislate something like that. Also, if lets say Zetterberg (cause his beard is awesome) scored 35 points and won the MVP. Would his beard change anything about it in any form? No.

Right, like how is that even enforceable? Players must be clean shaven every day? It's nonsense and a pipe dream. And I agree, beards or no beards the stars will be stars and that's really where marketability comes from. And from a fan point of view, it would be a crime. There's been a ton of awesome beards over the years. The number huge playoff moments that have been executed by guys with massive beards is countless, and in my opinion that only enhances the game. Especially when you see that guy jumping into a celebration with a group of other guys with massive beards. It's one of those badass things that makes hockey the best.

Re: The NHL Thread

To add the the point, did Gretzky not having a beard make him marketable? No. It was the fact he scored 92 goals, 215 points or 47 points in the playoffs one year.

Also, saw the Coyotes thing isn't such BS as the NHL and the team tried to make it sound like. This team could have been back in Winnipeg 3 or 4 years ago. Granted then we'd have a cluster fuck in ATL going on still probably but... If Glendale gets their way, what happens next? Seattle doesn't have a building, Vegas isn't ready until next year, and Quebec puts 17 teams in the East. How embarrassing this crap is.

I'll be honest, if Brett Burns ever shaved I wouldn't recognize him from any other white Canadian male.

Vegas could do it right now. Just play game at Thomas and Mack or Mandalay Bay or somewhere. It'll be a pain in the ass and a half to schedule on that short of notice, but it CAN be done.

Agreed, it is both tradition and also a barometer of how far your team has progressed. If anything they should expand the program to benefit society. Just using the Hawks for example but it would be a great thing and good PR if the organization donated X dollars to say Saint Jude's Hospital for children each day their teams stay alive - maybe the players could match what the team donates too - all to help a worthy cause.

the Hawks are 30-30 (.500) in Games 1-3 of a playoff series under Joel Quenneville; they are 40-14 (.741) in Games 4-7.

Honestly, between the semi's and this current series these stats are meaningless, this is just two good teams battling.

I guess and for only one year that would be the worst thing. Canes played in Greensboro for years before moving to Raleigh, Avs, Stars and Yotes (ironically) played in inadequate buildings for years too. One year would be nothing. Wonder if Portland comes out of nowhere as a possibility, if this indeed goes down tonight.

might have something to do with Oduya getting banged up in game 3, they probably want to ride with an extra D in case he's limited or aggravates it.

very good point by me.

Coyotes will be in Glendale next year. Sounds like city wants to renegotiate, Yotes owner saying now. Maybe this IS your Vegas team next year.
