Cannot understand gutting a 106 pt team in order to sign a goalie that is fairly unproven in the playoffs. Guess that doesn't matter if they don't make the playoffs.

the past is irrelevant at this point. carter is a regular season allstar and consistently nets 30-40 goals per year, but what has he done in the playoffs? i love the guy and im not happy hes gone, but if you dont show up in the playoffs (for two straight post-seasons nonetheless), its a different story. plus, his contract was until 2056, and even though 5.2 mil is reasonable for him, ill take voracek for much less than that. voracek is young, good, and has a ridiculous upside. also, with securing the #8 overall pick, the flyers were smart in making sure they continued to obtain talent for the future.

this richards trade, however, is mind boggling. yea schenn looks like he can be a freak, but potential is a scary thing to rely on (see flyers goalies). i know simmonds is a defensive forward who's also young and affordable, but he isnt nearly as talented as richards, who literally could do everything. finally, the 2nd round pick should have been a 1st as well - just a bad trade unless schenn turns into the next giroux. why the fuck was versteeg not traded instead?

either way, i thought the point of going after a proven goalie was because we had the supporting TEAM in front to win games.....we just completely screwed that up, and its apparent they're now depending on jvr and giroux to carry this team. to me, these trades were all about the future. simmonds and schenn are young, we have a top 10 pick this year now, giroux and jvr are young as shit (and will have contracts expiring soon).....like i said - this is a long term business day of trades.

no the rumor is Versteeg to Florida for the 3rd pick (there needs to be more Floridas way for that to happen, unless Tallon really loves Versteeg) and then Philly sending the #3 pick to Tampa for Stamkos (again I think more has to go Tampas way)

Yeah. As someone else said potential talent is great, and they have received a lot of it but you were close to a Cup. Carter trade made sense to make room for a goalie but Richards one there must be something else going on.

Don't tempt me

Here's my understanding........

Homer and Snider have been at odds with how to construct a SC winning team. Homer's strategy was to load up on D-Men and Centers with the thinking that the depth at those two positions can cover up any flaws in net. This is the strategy that the Flyers have used since '07-'08 (which lead to a ECF, a ECQF, a SCF, and a ECSF).

After the Hawks won, just about everyone said the Flyers should get a goalie. Snider apparently was one of the key people suggesting Homer get a goalie in the offseason. Homer basically told Snider that he (Homer) knew what he was doing and cited the SCF appearance as proof. Snider let Homer proceed according to Homer's plan and the Flyers ignored their goalie situation and made their biggest splash by getting Meszaros.

Flash forward to this offseason.......

Goaltending played a large role in the Flyer's downfall this year and resulted in many Flyers' fans thinking "what could have been?". Snider approached Homer and basically told him that the Flyers did things Homer's way last year and it failed miserably in the playoffs. Snider told Homer he had to sign Illya.

Obviously the Flyers had to unload some salary and Carter was the obvious choice. My complaint is that the Flyers should have stopped there and they still would been able to keep Richards and Illya. Homer felt as though the Flyers still needed to shed some cap space and Richards was the only other player with a contract that teams would take/the Flyers were willing to give up (ie no Giroux). With that, Carter and Richards were both gone.......

All in all, the Richards and Carter trades were done so that the GM could meet the owner's lone offseason demand. Personally, I don't think it is worth it. The Flyers realistically had a two year window to win a Cup at this point with the roster they had. With these moves (as they stand), I don't think the Flyers will be winning a cup in that window

I hope I'm wrong

I agree with you about the playoffs. The problem is that making the playoffs is not what Flyers' fans define as success. We want more. We've waited for more than just the playoffs......

Not sure if I agree if it is "for the better". This team (was) built to win now. If we are going to blow up the team why don't we do it properly and cut loose all the older players? If we are trying to win now, why get rid of Richards and Carter on the same day?

I think you misinterpreted what I was trying to say. I was simply reacting to people who might think the Flyers will miss the playoffs. They'll still be a very good team next year, undoubtedly. I'm also very excited to see Pronger take on the C, which was obviously an issue. Let's face it, Scott Hartnell is the only one remaining out of the Olde City Crew. First Lupul and Upshall went in an effort to get Richards and Carter to settle down, and after all that--it was apparently the same attitude.

No doubt Shenn is going to make or break the deal for the Flyers. I think he has terrific upside, I'm excited.

Yea, I agree with you about the "Flyers are fucked!" line of thinking I've seen around. Strange moves, no doubt, but the Flyers are still very much a playoff team. Hopefully JVR picks right up where he left off in the playoffs

I just love it because the fact that the Flyers have not won anything since '75--they are quite popular. It's not like we (Flyers fans) have been tooting our horns anymore than 'Hawks fans in here. (This is excluding Mdrums, of course)

No one will ever accuse Flyers fans of being bandwagon fans, that's for sure

The bigger question is whose wife/girlfriend did Richards bang to get sent packing?

Question for Red Wings fans and those who follow them...

So if you are the Detroit Red Wings, what do you do with your options... Jagr supposedly got the best offer from the Wings but yet he really wants to be with the Penguins. At the same time I have heard Modano wants to play another season as does Draper, Salei, and Osgood who are near the end of their careers. You also have to deal with Ericcson, Eaves, and Miller who need new contracts. Personally, I don't want them to resign (or sign) Salei, Osgood, or Salei. I think Joey Mac has the potential to be a really good back-up for Howard and I have no issues with his performance from last season. Eaves did reasonably well in the playoffs and I think Miller has potential. Ericcson is nice to have around as he is a big bodied player but I really don't know how much potential he really has to be a solid D-man. I really hope they can sign a really good D-man to join the team and learn from Lidstrom, but I don't really know who is available.

All thoughts are appreciated.

Edit: I would not mind them getting rid of Hudler for cap room or for a more promising young forward

I'm the only regular around here. A few Wings fans poke their head in at times during the season. First Joey Mac: He's gone. Wings wanted to sign him to a two-way deal so they could send him to the minors. They want depth. Do I think Joey could do backup job? yeah. But after that all they have are kids like Pearce and McCollum. Makes more sense to a veteran behind Jimmy and Joey in the minors. Joey is looking for a one-way deal and apparently has an offer to play in Europe.

Salei has also been told he won't get an offer before July 1. They might consider him as a 6th/7th d-man late in the summer if they still nee one and he needs a job. He played well in the playoffs. The regular season was something else.

Modano is gone. Wings have other things to address. He could have worked out well. He started to fit in and then got hurt. That's where his downfall was. Too bad really. I know Wings fans will want to say it didn't work but you really can't say that when he missed 3-4 months or whatever it was.

Draper and Ozzie want to come back but I'm not sure they will. More likely that Ozzie does of the two. But Wings want to see what available with veteran goalies first. Neither want to play anywhere else so they'll just have to sit around for a little while this summer.

Wings want Eaves and Miller back. They both could get better deals elsewhere but they should talk to Dan Cleary because he was a castaway like they were and now has made a home. People will say the Wings are old but Datyuk, Franzen, Zetterberg and Cleary all have a good 5 years of being great so while it will hurt when Lidstrom is gone this team will be fine. So take a little more money or a great organization and winning?

Ericsson: He's been a disappointment. He needs to put on some weight. Never uses his size they way he could. He looked so good on that trip to the Finals in 09. Was offered a deal around $2mil that he didn't take. I have a feeling he's gone because someone will give him a nice contract offer that he won't be able to turn down.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Hudler traded, even this weekend. Filppula too. Neither has been fantastic but has value. Wings won't just give them away. It would have to benefit them. I'd talk to Winnipeg about Bogosian. He might be worth some type of package. Not only is he something that can work now it's something for the future.

As for d-men I think Bieksa or Wisniewski will be the top two guys they look at in UFA. Next summer I think the man they want will be available and that's Ryan Suter of the Preds. Once the Preds sign Weber it'll be tough to sign him too and Lidstrom's cap number will come off the books when he retires. Not a bad transition.

And for Jagr, I'm skeptical. Could it work? yeah. But how well? This team needs to tighten up defensively first so...I dunno. Him and Datsyuk could be fun to watch.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

OK so now a post on non-Wings stuff. I'm still in shock. Again Carter deal was happening regardless. He just seemed to be the odd man out. You needed a goalie after this last year. People can say the Wings and Hawks won without great goaltending but Niemi proved he was better that some thought and Ozzie was a Cup champ and is now a 400 game winner. Not quite Boucher who had bounced around or Leighton. I'm not sold on Bryz but he's an upgrade.

Now Richards is where the surprise is. Makes me wonder if there was something going on in that dressing room. You trade away a 40-50 goal scorer and your captain. Yes you get a good return most likely but you were close to a Cup team. Are the Flyers better? We'll see. I'm not sure they are NOW but this could end up making them better. Are they a playoff team? Yeah barring anything crazy happening. We thought the Devils were and thought the Flyers were in 07 so things can happen but I believe they are a playoff team. It just surprises me because while these moves make your organization good in the long run I don't think they make you any closer to a Cup for NEXT year and I think that's what a lot of fans wanted.

Bob Mackenzie made a point on TSN last night too. Kind of a slap in the face to Carter and Richards. Carter almost more so because he JUST signed that 11 year deal assuming he was going to stay and then you ship him out. Ouch. I know things have to be done and the Flyers probably didn't think they were going to need to sign a guy like Bryz but it still has got to hurt Carter.

Kings and Jackets improved though. I'd watch out for the Kings now. They are deep at center. If they are healthy they could make some noise. Jackets will be better but a playoff team in the West? Hard to tell. But they'll be challenging I think.

Finally the Winnipeg franchise has an announcement schedule for 11am, assuming Central Time, about "hockey ops." My guess..team name. I'm very surprised nothing has leaked out. You'd think the company making the jerseys and stuff would know and would have let it slip but guess now. We'll see in a few hours.

The Carter trade was a good trade for both sides. The Flyers had to clear cap space and the Jackets had to get someone exciting in here to play with Nash. Based on the comments from players, management and fans it has already energized this team. The happiest guy in the world has to be Nash - he hasn't had one decent center to play with his entire career.

Of course something was happening in the locker room. There was a divide. More on point, Richards and Carter were the longest-tenured Flyers in the locker room. Ever since they came, the team has become a very inconsistent hockey club, who seemed to have a lackadaisical approach when things were going bad. Furthermore, it was quite evident this past season that Richards was not the captain that the Flyers had always imagined him to be. Richards has won at every level juniors, world juniors, Olympics, AHL--he's going to win the NHL. I guarantee you. Look, teams rarely trade captains just to make a hockey move, or financial move. And the Flyers are even more unlikely to do just that, with the exception of Lindros. Something had to happen, that's for sure.

He's gone. Not worth the money that he wants especially that we have guys who can do his job cheaper. We lose a character guy, but it's not as bad as everyone from Pittsburgh makes it out to be.

I agree. You hate to lose a guy like that. Those are the guys that when you Cups, literally in his case BUT you have to know when to not overpay. They'll find someone to take on that role eventually.

I love the overreaction the Flyers moves are getting. Personally I feel the Flyers move could turn out to be huge depending on two things: the emergence of JVR and whether Schenn pans out. Schenn has all the tools to be a very explosive NHL player. Also it is kind of laughable about people talking about the playoffs when I personally think they are now better build for them. Carter has rarely done anything of note in the playoffs and Richards lack of leadership was one of the key reason (save injuries) as to why the Flyers faltered last year

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

I really like the Richards trade. It got pretty obvious that he was in need of either a serious attitude adjustment or a change of scenery, and he will fit in well with LA. They've needed that second line center for so long, and just imagine how he could fit in playing with a guy like Dustin Brown. Not having to be in a leadership position should also help his game I imagine.

Schenn was a big price to pay, but in the end LA still has so much young talent that they should be ok. As long as Schenn's game doesn't go completely to hell, he should be a great player for a long time. I picture him and OMGCG doing some damage. Simmonds will also be a great Philadelphia Flyer.

It's still crazy what they did. Going to be tough to replace 36 goals. I don't get the Carter hate from Philly. It thins out a lineup that was dangerous last year. A lineup that was two wins away from a cup the year before. It could go very badly. Will be interesting to see Bryz in a system that doesn't sit back, meaning there will be more scoring chances on him. If that goes well, then the Flyers will be fine, but there will be a very different mentality on that team. It's bizarre that they moved both players. Something had to be going on in that locker room to completely wipe out a core of the team.

I cant say a bad word about the guy and never will because he won us the cup, but for the price he wants i think its best he moves along.
