We better make a huge play for Richards, though. Campbell's cap hit is awful, however he is still a very good puck mover and has been key in the Hawks transition game.

Olesz's numbers look like shit....why did Florida give him $3mil a year?

Ok, so assuming Olesz is on the team and Reinprecht is not, Hawks should have about $13.9m to spend on 6 players.

Hmm. I don't see how you get 5 guys. I'm thinking 6 guys to fill out a 21-man roster.

$7mil for 5 guys still works, though. Just not as well as $10mil for 6 guys.

And remember, we need to sign two defensemen. Right now Leddy would be on the 2nd pairing. Not too sure I love that idea.

Hmm, I am thinking Kruger may be in Rockford for part of the year.

Either way, you'd like to dump Olesz to get a quality 2nd-line d-man. Going to be tough since he's terrible and coming off an injury.

Have to say I disagree that this is a sure thing. Yeah he will definitely play in the NHL next season, but I don't know if he'll be there the entire year.

I mean, if the team goes out and got Richards and Madden signs, there's no more room for another C. Kruger has no use as a 4th liner, and Bolland is better on the 3rd line, as he can make Bickell/Frolik/whoever better.

Of course something was happening in the locker room. There was a divide. More on point, Richards and Carter were the longest-tenured Flyers in the locker room. Ever since they came, the team has become a very inconsistent hockey club, who seemed to have a lackadaisical approach when things were going bad. Furthermore, it was quite evident this past season that Richards was not the captain that the Flyers had always imagined him to be. Richards has won at every level juniors, world juniors, Olympics, AHL--he's going to win the NHL. I guarantee you. Look, teams rarely trade captains just to make a hockey move, or financial move. And the Flyers are even more unlikely to do just that, with the exception of Lindros. Something had to happen, that's for sure.

Bolded 1: Do you remember the Flyers teams from '98-'03?

Bolded 2: Flyers go to the SCF and Richards has become the captain everyone thought he would be. Flyers get knocked out by the Bruins and it is all because of him and his leadership. There is a lot of blame to go around for the sweep and it certainly wasn't all on Richards

Bolded 3: It was largely a financial move. Carter was basically moved for Illya. Homer realized the Flyers still need to shed salary/fill some holes. No other Flyer could net the return that Richards did. Homer's hands were tied by Snider's mandate to get Illya

Was Richards named the captain too early? Yes
Was Richards immature at times? Yes
Did Richards need to learn how to deal with the media? Yes
Will the Flyers sorely miss his two way play next year? Yes

I like this trade alot. We kept the 4 prospects that I think will have the most talent out of everyone we have in our system, AND got rid of Butler. All while bringing on Regher.

Seems like a good trade to me.

First and foremost, as much as I (very vocally in this thread a lot) HATED Soupy's contract, we would not have won the Cup without him. Fact. Thank you to him for all he did for this franchise. His game will be missed.

His contract, not so much. :lol

Reminder: before the Blackhawks can appropriately spend money in free agency this summer, they need to determine an ETA for Dylan Olsen, Shawn Lalonde and, perhaps first in the group, Ryan Stanton. Don't give Wisniewski 3 yrs if you want Olsen in that slot in 2...
100% truth to that. Who we sign come July 1 to fill the gaps at D are key. I think Campoli is coming back 100% now. 2 year deal maybe. We'll see something like 2-7, 4-8, 14-?. I like that. We really don't need one more puck moving blue liner.

We now have money to spend. We need a center, period. Maybe Arnott will sign for cheap as a rental to try and contend for the cup while his career is winding down? I'd take it.

People immediately began shouting the name Brad Richards around. DOUBTFUL. Unless he takes a major, major pay cut from what he might make (think 5 years 5.2 million cap hit TOPS), it ain't happening. We need to fill out and balance with talent, can't be top heavy. Plus, we're gonna see a Sharpie extension very quickly here I think. Next couple months tops. Probably a 5 million cap hit himself. Maybe more. Richards is out of the question.

This free agent pool is thin, so we might see package deal trades. Not sure what, but it's a possibility. I really wish we had one year left with Kopy to dangle out there as trade bait after that year he had last year. We'll see what happens, we need quality forwards though.

there is talk the Hawks will buyout Olesz contract, with a 6-year penalty of $650,000, which would give us like $16.5 mil. Richards is rumored to want $7. I don't see how that's too crazy.

Right, I heard the same thing, and I like the idea of buying out his contract either way. Guy is a buster, get him out of here for minimal damage, then we basically just cut 90% of Soupy's contract (and his play).

But, as far as Richards:

1) I don't see Bowman cutting Soupy's contract like that just to sign another 5 (or so) year deal for another $7 million cap hit. And that's beside the fact that Richards should not be the guy in our locker room with the biggest contract.

On the other hand...

2) Here's a little thing I made up on capgeek. Ignore Jimmy Hayes, he represents the contract buyout:

Quote:

CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR

FORWARDS
Patrick Kane ($6.300m) / Jonathan Toews ($6.300m) / Patrick Sharp ($3.900m)
Jeremy Morin ($0.886m) / Brad Richards ($7.000m) / Marian Hossa ($5.275m)
Marcus Kruger ($0.900m) / Dave Bolland ($3.375m) / Ben Smith ($0.812m)
/ Jimmy Hayes ($0.654m) / Bryan Bickell ($0.541m)

DEFENSEMEN
Brent Seabrook ($5.800m) / Duncan Keith ($5.538m)
Niklas Hjalmarsson ($3.500m) / Nick Leddy ($1.116m)
John Scott ($0.512m)

GOALTENDERS
Corey Crawford ($2.666m) / Alexander Salak ($0.612m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $55,691,796; BONUSES: $965,000
CAP SPACE (18-man roster): $8,608,204
We need two defensemen, period. You and I both (obviously) know Scott is not an everyday guy. So we need a couple forwards and a couple defensemen, ok, not so bad. Add Campoli at that ~1.5 million cap hit, then another center (Madden/Ryan Johnson) at about 600k, and we're cooking. Plus, add this talk of Kyle (GULP) Beach...(I still don't buy it) being ready for the NHL, and we're looking like this:

Quote:

CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR

FORWARDS
Patrick Kane ($6.300m) / Jonathan Toews ($6.300m) / Patrick Sharp ($3.900m)
Jeremy Morin ($0.886m) / Brad Richards ($7.000m) / Marian Hossa ($5.275m)
Marcus Kruger ($0.900m) / Dave Bolland ($3.375m) / Ben Smith ($0.812m)
Michael Frolik ($1.500m) / John Madden ($0.700m) / Bryan Bickell ($0.541m)
/ Jimmy Hayes ($0.654m) / Kyle Beach ($1.170m)

DEFENSEMEN
Brent Seabrook ($5.800m) / Duncan Keith ($5.538m)
Niklas Hjalmarsson ($3.500m) / Nick Leddy ($1.116m)
John Scott ($0.512m) / Chris Campoli ($1.400m)

GOALTENDERS
Corey Crawford ($2.666m) / Alexander Salak ($0.612m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $60,462,629; BONUSES: $1,290,000
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $3,837,371
That's pretty nice. Again, remember Jimmy Hayes isn't really there, that's a penalty for the contract buyout. So we have a 21-man roster with about $4 million to spend, give or take a couple hundred thousand. Who knows what we're looking at for our last d-man. Sopel like we talked about before? Sure at this point, if you told me it would be Brad Richards and Sopel for Campbell a couple weeks ago...uh....YES.

Best part though, we have OPTIONS. The worst part, we need to do well. If we flop in free agency, this could be a scary season. Leaving a lot in the hands of chance here, Stan.

so my question is, do you sign Brad Richards, or do you go for Brooks Laich, another solid D man, and make this team real deep? I think they need to go for Richards because I think they can make the team deep even with Richards

and the only other problem is I have been reading that the Campoli negotiations are going to get messy. When I do capgeek, I put him at $2 mil just to be safe, but I don't think it would get that high. But then there is still Stalberg. do you trade him? do Beach or Morin not make it? Who's the 6th d-man? Does Kruger get top line minutes in the AHL?

There is just so much this team can do now. The rest of the league should be shitting razor blades

Depends how much faith they have in Ben Smith, Morin, and Kruger moving forward as 82 game guys, honestly.

I think that line is great on it's own, but mixing and mashing (i.e. Morin with Hossa and Brad Richards...:hump:hump:hump )...incredible. But you saw it along with me last year, Smith could have had his name called all year and they just didn't. Also, talks of a Kopecky resigning are still be swirled around out there, that the Hawks really want him back. Q LOVES Kopy, so don't rule out the Blackhawks overpaying for him, as much as that makes me sick to my stomach to type, it's a possibility.

Don't pay Campoli a dollar more than 1.7, IMO.

Stalberg can walk. Fuck him. He is a perfect script of his scouting report. Fast with great hands but can't finish. He's last priority.

Morin is priority #1 to skate with the team. Over Kruger and over Smith. Period. Morin will be in the Indian Head to start the season.

Smith will as well. Those two are way too good to not be, especially at their price. Neither one needs more time in the AHL.

Kruger is probably a 98% chance of playing in the NHL all year too. Again, too much talent. Kid just wasn't used to the NHL game or speed yet. He was getting there though. Offseason workouts and all that nonsense should get him good and familiar with it. Plus he saw it at it's fastest against Vancouver in the playoffs. He's ready.

So there's those three roster spots, just assume to be taken up. It would take something dramatic for them not to be.

Then as far as everyone else, as I said, it all boils down to the organizations faith in them. If they think Morin can be a top 6 forward, then Richards is much MUCH more of a possibility. I think Morin and Smith can be. BUT, if the organization still thinks they are a year away, we might see a rental of an old guy that wants to win.

Which, in that case, means we thin out at our blue line, which I don't see happening. This team wants to stay as deep there as possible. If they splurge on money, it's there.

I think they NEED to have faith in the Kruger, Smith, Morin trio. I sure as hell do.

The biggest problem is, the league is so thin at defensive free agents this year. I have no idea who goes there. Wiz at a cheap contract wouldn't surprise me? I don't know. It'll be interesting.

Richards-Hossa-Sharp :hump :hump :hump

any who, there are way too many options for this team. I really hope Kopy goes, he shouldn't be back, unless he takes a pay cut. The Hawks don't need to save money, we aren't Phoenix or Florida. We are paying Huet $5 mil a year to suck in Europe. To have all of this room and not go for some big trades or free agents would be a shame. I'm all giddy thinking about the shit this team can do now.

And as for Kyle Beach (just mentioning his name makes my butt hole clench up), who knows. If the kid has finally grown up and is NHL ready, then awesome. But I'll believe that when me shit turns purple and smells like rainbow sherbert.

Beach is a big body with great hands, scares the fuck out of guys, and can be a force that SCORES.

WOW! JUST WHAT WE NEED!

But wait...BUT WAIT....he also could very easily rival Nick Boynton for the "HOLY SHIT WHY ARE YOU TAKING A PENALTY IN A TIE GAME WITH A MINUTE AND A HALF REMAINING IN THE 3RD PERIOD!?!?!" award. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he led the league in PIM as a 4th liner. He would do it. Kyle Beach would fight a guy over how he ties his skates.

I love the trade too - they needed another D-Man so badly this past year. I'm still hoping they make a run at Richards - who know though :rolleyes

More than anything this proves that Pegula isn't kidding when he says he will do what it takes to win. The Sabres would have NEVER done a trade where they take back dead weight like Kotalik with Golisano in charge. The Sabres are also far from done, some offensive help is definitely on its way. Hopefully a no. 1 center

UFA wise, only Richards but Statsny is a name I've heard thrown around as far as trades go. Who really knows though but at least it looks like they are actually trying this summer.

Yeah it's a refreshing approach - there's a difference between spending money well and just spending money - hopefully Pegula can walk that line

Just read that Winnipeg has opted to return to the Jets name:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=6700915

Works for me, although those old uniforms could use a minor update/upgrade before the season starts. They're a little too 1970s for my taste.

Wonder if I'll ever get to say the same thing about the Quebec Nordiques gear I bought 15 years ago. I happened to be in Quebec City just after the move was announced and snapped up a bunch of Nords' stuff while I was there.

Mark Chipman said they would be a tweak to the colors and a new logo. My guess is a different shade of blue, something a little more "modern". I do hope they use those old ones for a few games.

See I like that my Kansas City Scouts sweater is unique. When I was at the HHOF back in 04 I almost bought a Jets one but thought a team might end up back there one day and wanted to be "different".

I have a feeling if the arena goes through in QC, there will be a team back there in a few years. I don't think it'll be the Coyotes no matter what many of our Canadian fans think.

You ought to invest in a California Golden Seals jersey (or their short-lived successor, The Cleveland Barons). That franchise has moved around a lot. After Cleveland, it merged with the Minnesota North Stars, which, of course, is now in Dallas.

Honestly...the jersey I wanted was a California Golden Seals/Oakland Seals one but they didn't have any in stock. That's why I got the KC Scouts one. They had the Nords and Jets too but I don't remember the Barons one. At the time I just figured KC was the least likely to get a franchise. So far anyways...I'm right. And they moved quite a bit too. KC to Colorado to NJ.

Actually, Kansas City was tossed around as a possible new location for the Pittsburgh Penguins before Mario Lemieux saved them from financial ruin.

I definitely see what you're saying but my Atlanta Thrashers sweater now takes its place (It was a gift from my sis who lived in Atlanta, I did not spend my own money on Thrashers gear) I'm thinking my next sweater purchase will be a Rochester Amerks home blue. I hadn't heard that, but that's great news. Felt weird when they re-affiliated with Portland. Amerks still have the record for the highest attendance at a minor league hockey game (played at HSBC during the 2004 lockout).

Yeah I know but I think it was a scare tactic. KC has been used more than Winnipeg has been.

Also another realignment article.

http://aol.sportingnews.com/nhl/stor...ent-conference

Four divisions will help with a more balanced schedule imo. It would most likely eliminate as many trips west for teams like CBJ, Detroit and Nashville.

from a rivalry standpoint I would hate to see the Red Wings go East. From a competition standpoint, I would love to never lose the West ever again.

TMoore4075 06-25-2011 06:01 PM

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

If they are thinking two 8 team divisions and two 7 team ones it might make sense to have 16 teams in one conference and 14 in the other. Nashville is still stuck in the West but in terms of timezone's they belong in the West. Another post said it would be divisions by timezone. So the new "central", or Midwest as I saw in one article, could be Chicago, Nashville, St. Louis, Minny, Dallas, Winnipeg and probably Colorado. The Pacific would then be Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, SJ, LA, Anaheim and Phoenix.

The East would be tricky since a majority of the teams are in the more NE part of the country. Carolina, FLA and Tampa are kind of off by themselves. Boston, NYR, NYI, NJD, Ott, Mont, TO, and lets say Detroit. That puts all the Original 6 in the same division. It could also be Buffalo in place of Detroit. The South Division or whatever would be Pitt, Philly, Columbus, Car., FLA, TBL, Washington and either Buffalo or Detroit.

Then if you make a more balanced schedule CBJ and Detroit in the East makes it so the Jackets don't lose their Wings games. Nashville would still see Detroit in their building once a year, I know it's not 3 but the Preds played to 94% capacity last season so the talk the NEED the Wings isn't exactly right. The Hawks sold out every game but they still get the Wings once and teams like the Ducks, Stars and Coyotes who need the Wings a little more right now would still see them once a year instead of twice. Not a huge difference.

I like all of that very very much. Detroit should go into the "south" or whatever. Buffalo and Toronto are practically touching, so they should be in the same division. It will be nice for Vancouver to actually have some competition with LA, SJ, and Anaheim moving to their division. Bettman will do all he can to get Crosby and Ovechkin in the same division.

The Hawks need the Wings once from a rivalry standpoint, not from a need to sell tickets. I think every game for the last 3-4 years has sold out.

Doubtful.

Saw this posted on 300level....

"We don't look backward," [Bowman] said Saturday. "We're looking forward to what's coming for us. When you see you have players coming up who are going to be earning more money in years to come you have to figure out where that money is going to come from. Brian's contract was one of the largest ones on the books for us. That was really the main thing. He was a very effective player for us but just in our team structure the contract made it difficult."
