It looks like the Flyers jerseys are a different shade of orange than their current uniform. The WC shade looks more like orange on a pumpkin...

Yes to all. They have a great top pairing in Johnson and Hejda (who has actually played better than expected), but their 3-6 d-men would all be 6-7 d-men on a playoff team. Varlamov's endurance is a big unknown, luckily he's got a great mentor in Giguere who can step in and play but who also provides invaluable wisdom as a guy who's gone the distance a couple times. The offense is looking great; Hejduk in particular is looking more hungry than he has in years.

I like them. While not original, they are something different and I like that they are trying to make throwbacks without them being actual throwbacks.

I only got to see the highlights of the Leafs vs Avalanche game last night, from what what I saw it looked like a good game. Giggy Would likely want that Kessel goal back and Reimer would want that hejduk goal back. Good to see Kulemin get his first goal of the season and also good to see General Macarther get his first assist of the season. I'm hoping for similar production out of both of them this season. Kulemin with another 30 goals and Mac with another 40 assists.

Hopefully Kessel doesn't fall off next game like he did last year. The Leafs need some consistency out of him if they're going to have any hope of maintaining this playoff run.

Also, I'm a little disappointed in Schenn so far this year. He signed that spiffy new contract and hasn't really done the things he did in previous years to earn it. I have confidence he'll turn it around, but up to this point he hasn't done the job I thought he'd do.

In saying that, I feel like the Leafs D this year is looking very solid. They have 8 Very capable D-men and with the way Phaneuf has started the season (1G 3A +8 4GP) if he can keep playing like that (obviously he won't be able to keep up his point a game pace) he could challenge for a Norris Candidate.

Sheldon Souray is terrible. He spent time in the AHL last season, and he's been injured alot very recently. I know he's put up some points so far this season, but I wouldn't put it past him to slip off since he's playing for the Stars.

Brodeur is nothing like he was, but I'd offer Vokoun, another player, for Broduer and either Corvo/Karlsson. Can't go wrong with Timonen either, but no way would I touch Souray.

I don't think Souray would be a bad pick up especially for what you have to give up. Does he care which goalie he gets? if not, send him Ward.

EDIT:^He does have a point though about the injury thing. Also doesn't help that he's competing for PP time with Gogo and Rolston

I'm sure you guys are missing me. I started a new job yesterday so I probably won't be around too much these first few weeks. But Wings schedule is pretty light so... They are off to their best start since 97-98 so I've got that going for me.

Nice to see the Jets finally win one although they are looking pretty terrible.

Looked at the standings and amazed how a few teams have only played 3 or 4 games while some are at 7 already.

I'm sure Matty's liking the Avs playing better of late. I know it's way early but Avs and Stars are a surprise on the good side and CBJ struggling is a surprise on the bad side.

In the recent past, Souray's reputation has been severely tarnished by a poor attitude and injuries (swordo and MikeD could probably chime in on that), but we forget that he was one of the premier offensive defensemen in the league not long ago. He would be valuable to your team, but I wouldn't overpay for him. Karlsson should get better as the season goes on, despite the fact that he plays for a pretty terrible team. He'll get you points, but his +/- will hurt.

Say what you will about Burke, but he's quietly assembled a pretty good team. You're right, he has built a solid D core, of which Schenn is the centerpiece. He will get better, although he needs to be wary of the tendency towards complacency that can come after locking up a long-term deal. Reimer is looking like the real deal. I love seeing bad teams do well, so I'm cheering for the Leafs (except when they play the Avs, of course).

I was bummed to see Kulemin score last night, as I had just dropped him from my fantasy team... but luckily I replaced him with Kris Versteeg, who had four points last night :lol

Very pleased with the effort of the Avs. It's too early to make too many assumptions, but any team that goes 5-0 on the road to start the season (minus the home opener loss to Detroit)... they're obviously doing something right. And the "something right" is simply hard work. Especially against the Leafs last night they were simply TENACIOUS in all 3 zones. They just attacked, attacked, attacked. Even on the PK in their own zone, they were all over the other team's point men, and still were able to use their speed to get back down low when needed. There are definitely some pieces missing, particularly on the back end... but this team is at the start of something special.

Also, Giguere was completely on top of things last night, as he was against Ottawa. It's comforting to know that if Varlamov has endurance issues down the stretch, there's a championship goalie who can step in and perform.

Maybe its just my homer goggles on, but I really didn't feel like this was a suspendable hit. It seemed like a straight up boarding call. Letang committed to the check while Burmistrov was still in a turning to get the puck. The time it took from him committing to the check and hitting him was about a second. Aside from not checking him at all, i'm not sure what Letang was supposed to do differently.

So if this is suspendable, is pretty much every boarding call an automatic suspension? I'd like to see a boarding call that wasn't suspended to compare.

There is definitely time, like Shanahan said, to minimize the check at least. This is a tough one because it did happen so quickly, like you said, but I think he could have at least minimized the contact. He was looking at Burmistrov's numbers for quite a bit. A second does not seem that long, but on the ice, that's time enough to pull up. You're still going to hit the guy, but not nearly as forcefully.

I think part of it is also the fact that Letang is clearly going for the hit. He gave up on the race for the puck and is obviously going to take the body. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but when you commit to taking the body, you are also responsible for making sure you make that contact cleanly.

But I do understand your point about suspensions. The NHL needs to be wary of making too gray a line between what is a hit that can simply be penalized in-game, and what warrants supplementary discipline. I see this topic coming more and more to the forefront as the season progresses.

On one hand I agree with the suspension because hits like this need to be out of the game. On the other hand, these will be the type of hits most likely to occur and you know damn well that the suspensions will not be consistent.

Its depressing that I have a hard time remembering what it was like when the Pens had a full, healthy roster. I think the last time they had most every major player healthy was in the 09-10 playoffs in the 2nd round vs. the Habs.

The idea of Crosby playing almost seems like a distant memory. Like I really have a hard time remembering what the team plays like when he's on the ice. And despite all of this, the team has been able to keep their head above water, to the credit of Bylsma.

Sometimes it takes a situation like that to wake a team up and help them realize they care about each other more than they may have thought.

Yep I agree. I lost a lot of respect for gleason last night with the way he acted. The highlights won't show it but he was doing his best Sean avery impression last night.

I refuse to blame it on that. The team just isn't playing with any sense of urgency right now. Lucic especially, looks like a totally different player.

The idea of Crosby playing almost seems like a distant memory. Like I really have a hard time remembering what the team plays like when he's on the ice. And despite all of this, the team has been able to keep their head above water, to the credit of Bylsma.

I know, it's crazy that we are watching a hockey team grind away and win hockey games with out a full lineup. Last year, the Pens just ran out of gas in the first round. This year, they are facing adversity early. So when the roster is back to being an actual NHL team, this team should be rejuvenated.

The blue-line and PK units are playing unreal hockey right now. MAF has been good, but not great as usual to start the season.

The perfect storm is brewing for the Pens right now.

Good lord, if everyone can get healthy and stay that way. I think this is a credit to the core of the team, the role players, and Bylsma's coaching. I really think he will break the record as the Pens' longest tenured coach (which is only like 4 years or something). Neal is shining. Dupuis is playing as solid as ever. I like the cut of their jib.

This is truth. Unlike striaght-up goon enforcers such as Eric Goddard, Cooke is a really skilled hockey player when he has his head on straight.

The last part is the key. So far he hasn't done anything. If he continues that he's a great asset.

and the Hawks still had some pretty nice wins last year too at this point. Doesn't mean you aren't hungover.

The hangover is not an excuse to lose games. They're playing like shit and losing. No reason to blame it on a hangover.

duh they're playing like shit, but what is the reason? Disinterest? Lazy? Not playing like themselves? Those are chronic symptoms of a hangover.

I think a lot of it has been bounces just not going their way and a few guys not performing well. I just don't buy the whole cup hangover thing. The bruins go through stretches like these every year. It just so happens this is occurring at the beginning of the year this year.

The extra month and a half-ish that teams had that the Canucks/Bruins didn't have to rehab injuries, rest, etc. is huge. Not to mention the fact that the Bruins were inevitably partying all summer and enjoying their Stanley Cup (as they should).

It just wears on you. I remember Q talking about (when the Hawks were slow out of the gate last year) how it's just hard to find the motivation to skate in those regular season games. After the intensity and thrill of the SC playoffs/Final, getting yourself jacked up for a regular season game in Carolina just isn't easy. I remember watching this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cysooHDha-o

And this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBAYYa72FVE

And remember them talking about how emotional it was and how it's makes it hard to skate in those regular season games when all you can think about is being back in that SC Final atmosphere, and the puzzle pieces just don't fit that you have to win now to get back there.

It's inevitable. Every team faces it to some extent.

well the Canucks, Sharks, Lightning, and Bruins are all off to slow starts, and those teams definitely did not get the summer that the other teams in the league got.

:lol Highlights don't tell the whole story of that game. Only thing I really had an issue with was Horton. He was dumb. Gleason was acting like a prick all game and everyone wanted him to drop the gloves, but it was obvious he wasn't going to. I have no issue with what Chara did, he was just igniting the team. This team plays better when they play physical like that and Chara knew he needed to light a fire under his team's ass.

Should I remember him as a Sabres' player or something? Name doesn't ring a bell in the slightest. Or did he clip the shit out of someone on our roster, and so I should hate him? Working on decent prices for tickets tomorrow night up in Sunrise. Sabres-Panthers games are always a blast down here because it feels like home; the ratio of Sabres:Panthers fans is about 5:1. Last time I was at a game between the two, my mom told me you could hear the Sabres fans in the crowd chanting "Let's go, Buff-a-lo!!!" on TV (by the way, the only sports chant where the city name actually fits the rhythm of the chant melody; fucking hate it to hear Boston and New York fans using that shit when it doesn't even match).
