Re: R.I.P. Leroi Moore.

Wow, I really can't wrap my brain around this. I can still remember as a high school sophomore in 1994 hearing WWYS on the radio and thinking, "I've never heard anything like this before." I immediately went and picked up the UTTAD cassette and once I heard Dancing Nancies and Ants I was completely changed forever.

Of course now that I'm a working man and father I'm still a huge fan, but high school and college (those times you always relate to music as you change and grow) will always be intertwined with DMB for me. Some of the best times I've ever had.

It will never be the same. Thanks Roi...RIP

Oh, I miss you LeRoi Moore
And my happiness is o'er
Winter's gone, and the river's on the rise
I loved you then, and ever shall
But there's no one left here to tell
The world has gone black before my eyes

Your playing has blessed my ears and soul... your solos and melodies will ring on throughout time. Your talent, ability and showmanship on the saxaphone as well as how you approached the other instruments in the wind family are what made you shine-- it was your role in this band that opened up my eyes to a whole new world & appreciation for true music some years ago. You have our utmost gratitude and respect for your confidence in founding one of the greatest bands ever. Your dedication, perseverance, and consistent playing will be missed dearly. Thank you LeRoi for creating unforgettable memories and making my life better.

like many of us this band has been the soundtrack to sooo many moments in my last 10 years. No matter how bad of a mood I have been in there has always been roi's sax there to lift me up and send chill through my spine. It became a feeling that words will never be able to explain. It is amazing how much one person can touch that you have never met face to face. The piercing sound of his flute and pennywhistle put tears in my eyes at times. He was soo much of DMB. Even if we get a replacement, his trademark tone he had on the sax will never be duplicated.

Roi thanks for all the amazing moments and for the transcending solos. You will be missed by so many. Goodbye.

As many have mentioned it is somewhat odd to feel so very sad about someone you have never met. However, I did feel a great deal of sadness when I heard of his death. I go to the SPAC shows every year with my close family and friends and it has brought us closer together. We look forward to it every year and Leroi was a huge part of that. I feel very lucky to have been at one of his last shows on 6/21/08. I wish Leroi's family and the Band my heartfelt condolences. I will be at the Garden on 9/10 to celebrate and remember a man that has given me and family so many great memories.

Thank you Leroi.

Re: R.I.P. Leroi Moore.

I know many people have said the same things I'm going to say, but I have to say them none the less.

Leroi felt like a brother to me. I feel like I lost a relative today. I have poured a good portion of the last 15 yrs of my life into this band. How can you not love these guys, even though you may never met any of them?

I was sitting at work today, trying to keep it together. Most people can not understand the loss we feel. They treat this as an afterthought, maybe even a joke. They just don't understand.

I have a lot more to say, but I can't do it right now. I'm going to drink some whisky in honor of Leori. I love you and will miss you forever.

Re: R.I.P. Leroi Moore.

I just wrote this up....

I remember the day clearly, it was a hot summer day in Charlottesvillle July 1995 when I first heard Dave Matthews Band. The song was "What Would You Say", and from the first note I was hooked. It was just so different from anything I had ever heard. It was so funky, Roi Moore was the backbone behind that funk. He was the secret spice, subtle, yet bursting with zest and flair.

Roi Moore didn't have much to say. Frankly he didn't need to say anything. He let his playing do the talking. He always hid behind those dark shades, and hardly ever moved onstage, but frankly, all the notes were dancing around him.

He was so much more then just a sax player. His flute solos were some of the most amazing musical pieces I have ever heard. (See "Say Goodbye", and the Pennywhistle on "Bartender".) For the last few years he seemed to rely less on the flute, but his sax solos were still mind blowing.

I've been blessed to see Dave Matthews Band 13 times. (12 with Roi.) And my favorite Roi story goes back to my very first show, December 22, 2002 at the MCI Center in Washington DC. 2/3rds of the way through the show the band had just finished playing "Jimi Thing." I was sitting front row directly in front of Roi. I had met a kid named Russ earlier that night who kept chewing my ear about Roi and asking all sorts of questions. Roi had an amazing solo during that version of Jimi and totally ripped it up. Russ and I kept cheering and motioning to Roi, seeing if we could even crack a smile from a figure who was usually always stoic.

Then it happened. Roi lifted his shades, put his hands in the center of his chest, made a heart shaped figure, and bowed to us. It was in typical Roi fashion, subtle and understated.

I was lucky enough to be sitting in front of Roi for his final show on June 28th 2008. What an amazing show it was. Roi rocked the long forgotten flute on “Dreaming Tree” and the band was tight as ever. They closed that show with a Sly and The Family Stone cover: “Thank You” (Fa Lettenme Be Mice Elf Again).

Tonight I want to say thank you Roi. Thank you for 17 years of the most amazing music I have ever heard. Tonight I make a heart and bow to you. Your sound will never die.

Re: R.I.P. Leroi Moore.

Not sure if this has already been posted or not, found it on http://road.davematthewsband.com/.

As we sat this afternoon contemplating the loss of our brother, we wondered how we could possibly do a show today. Dave put it into perspective stating, "There's no place I'd rather be than here with you guys right now." We cherish special memories of our lost friend. Tonight, Dave told a story about LeRoi at a bar in Virginia where the cash register was near the stage and LeRoi leaned on the register because "standing had become a chore". Roi proceeded to play the most beautiful version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow. Dave said, "that was the day I fell in love with him. And I'm still in love with him." It's safe to say we all were in love with him. "It's always easier to leave, than to be left." -DM

Well I know you're up in heaven reading this (since all of heaven is wifi now) and all I have to say is that I was thinking last night how words do not describe the feelings I felt while listening to you're music (especially the last riff of Ants) and then I realized that you're music was doing exactly that. You're music was putting the feelings in that you can't describe in words, only through music, and no one else will ever do it as well as you have. Thanks for everything.

I am stunned at the least.. the band will never be the same...What a phenomonal artist and talent. The emotion that comes from this band is unreal, from the band and each individual that makes up the band. I cried today and I obviously do not even know him personally. I was shocked when I went to the website to look at the setlist and all that popped up was the memorial page...i am just rambling because i do not even have words to describe the confusion

Re: R.I.P. Leroi Moore.

From Almost Famous:

"Some people have a hard time explaining rock 'n' roll. I don't think anyone can really explain rock 'n' roll. Maybe Pete Townshend, but that's okay. Rock 'n' roll is a lifestyle and a way of thinking... and it's not about money and popularity. Although, some money would be nice. But it's a voice that says, "Here I am... and fuck you if you can't understand me." And one of these people is gonna save the world. And that means that rock 'n' roll can save the world... all of us together. And the chicks are great. But what it all comes down to is that thing. The indefinable thing when people catch something in your music."

"They don't even know what it is to be a fan. Y'know? To truly love some silly little piece of music, or some band, so much that it hurts."

LeRoi, you brought us together. You played your heart out and we listened. We danced. We caught that feeling. Together.

And it hurts.

It hurts that you are gone.

"Life is short but sweet for certain"

We never know how much time we have on this earth, so it is important that we enjoy the moments we have. I can say that after my first DMB show in 1998 @ Deer Creek I was hooked. Now after nearly 50 show the band still brings joy and excitement every time I have the opportunity to see them. As for many of us die hard fans this is a tough moment to think of the band we all love without Leroi Moore.

I have put together a tribute to Leroi with pictures for this tour on my page.

I'm sitting here crying for a man I didn't know, the shock and saddness I felt on my way to work, was nothing to how i feel right now. Seeing it in print and reading some of the posts has really brought it to reality. I told some people at work, and there like bummer. But music is my religeon, so they don't understand how important music can mean to people. I've shed more tears for him, than my grandmother. That just shows you how powerful music can be. The DJ on the radio said " the music world lost a talented sax player today", and I knew. I yelled at the radio "NOOO" as she said his name. How can it happen so long after the accident, is what I want to know. I got to see him about a week before the accident in toronto. I was only worried that he could still play, never did I think he would die. So many questions with no answers. peace and love Leroi. You will not be forgotten.

Re: R.I.P. Leroi Moore.

It’s amazing how I can sit here and mourn the passing of a man I’ve never met. A man I’ve never talked about my day, sat down for a coffee, or stepped out for a cigarette with. A man I’ve never shared any tangible connection to. Yet my heart and soul feel heavier and heavier with every note from the pennywhistle on “Bartender” and every sax tone from the outro on “Ants Marching.” I guess the intangible connections can sometimes be the strongest. The music Leroi helped create has been the soundtrack to many of my life’s greatest joys and also deepest sorrows. Today after I heard I threw together a quick mix of some of my favorite Leroi songs and just drove around for half an hour letting my emotions take their course. It’s startling how I’ve let this music become such an enormous part of my life.

That's my good friend Leroi Moore on the saxaphone.

LOVE YOU MAN you will be missed!

Re: R.I.P. Leroi Moore.

I've been on the verge of tears all day.

I. . I just can't believe it. I found out last night, I tried listening to some dmb but it just didn't feel the same. It still doesn't.

I put on some tunes today and made myself listen, cried really hard and long while the music was playing. I feel better now, but my gosh. . I'm still weepy. :(

I can't even begin to fathom what the band and crew and LeRoi's family is going through, I'm just a die hard fan and I feel like I've lost a limb.

He's touched so many people on so many levels, I can't imagine dmb without him. :(

thank you so much for all you have done Roi, you will be missed.

Wow, I was actually in Miller's today on vacation thinkin bout how this is where it all started and now it's ended for Roi, there is no way it was meant for such a young talented soul to leave this world this soon. I was even talkin to my girlfriend the day before yesterday about how I had seen Coffin play well but you can't match Roi with that calm and cool attitude hiding behind those glasses....Life is short but sweet for certain.

JTR178 08-20-2008 11:31 PM

Re: R.I.P. Leroi Moore.

I never met Roi or anyone else in the band, but I consider each of them family because they have become such a huge part of me for the last 8 years. I was fortunate and honored to have seen Roi work his magic at 27 show over a third of my lifetime.

I would like to thank Roi for each and every gift he has given me through his music over the years.

Its pretty ironic, I got a tattoo yesterday afternoon of a tree you might find in Africa. It was to be my dreaming tree of sorts, but now it will forever remind me of Roi.

We will miss you more than you know Leroi. Thanks for the memories!

Words cannot begin to describe the emptiness.

Feels as though a piece of me has died forever.

R.I.P. Mr. Moore, you shall never be forgotten.

Re: R.I.P. Leroi Moore.

It's funny...for weeks, I've been seeing this at the top of the forums whenever I visit:

"Hello Hokie4Life it appears that you have not posted on our forums in several weeks, ..."

It's sad that it took the passing of LeRoi to prompt me to post again. I just felt that I needed to mourn with fellow Ants tonight. I can't think of the words required to express what I'm feeling right now. Even though I didn't know him personally, it doesn't make the sense of loss any less real. LeRoi will be greatly missed.

God bless...

R.I.P. Roi. You will never be forgotten. Watching & listening to the music you created on & off the stage took me to a totally different element. Thanks for some many great memories. Keep jammin' on my man.

My thoughts are with his family, friends, and of course the band members.

Re: R.I.P. Leroi Moore.

It's incredibly sad that he died, he will never be able to be replaced! Dave Matthews Band has helped me in so many ways and gotten me through some hard times and it could never have been that way without LeRoi. But he's jamming out up in heaven right now, and it makes me smile a little bit to think about it!

No way to know that when I sat two rows from him at Busch that that would be the last time I'd see him.

Rest In Peace, Mr. Leroi Moore.

I've never posted before but I've been an avid reader of the forums...

The band has played such a HUGE part of my life for over 15 years and losing Roi is like losing a member of my family. Concerts will never be the same without him. And it definitely is strange to mourn a man that I've never met and cry tears for someone I only connected with through his music.

Roi, you were much loved and will be deeply missed.

My prayers are with your family, the crew and the band.

Re: R.I.P. Leroi Moore.

I already posted earlier in this thread but I wanted to add something.

What got me into DMB solely was the sax jam in the studio cut of #41 ... driving in a car with the windows down in summer, dark outside, just met a girl and was going through the whole "damn this is awesome" thing and the sax jam just hit around 4:33 ... I was totally unprepared for it.

To this day I can hum the entire solo and even though I've moved on past the girl ... those last 2 minutes remain etched in my head forever.

R.I.P. LeRoi ... just save a jam for me when I make it up there myself.

I have been struggling with this all day, i can't even imagine new music without leroi moore involved, leroi was an inspiration to every DMB fan around the world!! from the first time i saw him to the last, he amazed me with his musical talents, never to be replaced, and always remembered. rest in peace roi!!! we all miss you and will catch up with you on the other side!! keep playing brother!!

It's a sad sad day. The only words that come to mind are "Celebrate we will, for life is short but sweet for certain". Roi R.I.P. Heaven just got better, and as I saw one memeber post, GOD needed a new saxist. I know you will teach the boys up there how to jam. I just hope that the boys left here can continue to jam as well. I'm so glad I got to see one of your last shows, and without the glasses. Alpine was great but different. 51 shows with you and 2 without. I'd give them all up to get you back. My heart goes out to the Moore family and all of DMB. Hang in there and may GOD be with all of you. May bad things come to those who posted trash and stupid stuff everywhere today, you are so shallow. May only good things come to DMB and Roi's family, and may GOD speed the healing process for all. Roi JAM 2 DMB 4 EVER!!! Your legend will live on, may your spirit follow the boys now cause they need ya. Please make the grave shallow enough so he can still hear Dave. 11 years with you guys. I really don't think any of you know how much you actually touch our lives, the true fans you have. Now with the outpouring of love hopefully you see that we are here with you. Please continue to JAM, but only if you can! I will miss all of the songs just like everyone else. My FAV is the little solo Woody Woodpecker jam in Jimi Thing. I will always remember that, and the rest of the memories too. All of the DMB community will miss ya... DMBJAMZ aka DMB3420

This news has shocked me, so happy i have had the pleasure to listen to roi's truly angelic music,

I know i saw alot of people listing songs like the end of bartender and many other songs that touch them, but a must is the flute in the beginning of say goodbye at denver in 200 just gives me the chills every time i listen to it

RIP leroi . . your family and all of the DMB group touring are in my prayers!!!!

Re: R.I.P. Leroi Moore.

The memory of Roi has already brought so many people together. My best friends left for college today, and we were able to chill and have one last DMB night together-so many tears-but so many smiles and great memories. It's been so hard and I know it will continue to be-but the music that the dave matthews band has brought us all these years truly can get me through anything-Roi is greatly missed here in Michigan, and he will never be forgotten. Thanks so much Roi for everything.

Vert 08-21-2008 12:55 AM

Re: R.I.P. Leroi Moore.

One of the things that pulls me to truly love dave matthews band is that saxaphone and violin from boyd and leroi...it surely won't be the same. Before DMB I never really cared much for jazz music but their hint of jazz in some of their music actually has opened me up to enjoy a world of new genres.

RIP Leroi, it's amazing how great the fans of DMB are that they can be so kind in a crazy world such as this one.

And I salute DMB for continuing on with the shows despite the circumstances, takes some real courage to do that.

My prayers go out to Leroi's family and friends.

I think this is my third post in this thread, but I'm about to hit the sack and I just wanted to say goodnight to everyone still awake and reading. I also wanted to say thank you. Everyone close to me knows that I'm passionate about this band, but I don't think they know how deeply connected I feel to the band and their music. I'm so glad there's a place for somone like me. Thank you to all who shared their emotions. Thank you to all who shared their memories.

Here's hoping tommorow will be a day filled with great things.

I am deeply saddened by this news. For the past few shows I've seen, I thought that Jeff Coffin is doing a good job, but he doesn't have the soul and feeling Roi does, so I really missed him. This will be now even more so. It will be weird at the Gorge for sure. I will miss you, Roi, R.I.P.

Roi stayed to himself. He wasnt interested in showing off all the bling and stuff(minus thoser really nice watches he would sport). He seemed real layed back and down to earth. Man its gonna be hard to be a fan of DMB without Roi being there. We will all miss you roi. be safe up there in heaven

DerekJTR2-

You're quote, those lyrics from JTR-got me through the day today. My best friend texted them to me this morning. it was her birthday and she was leaving for college-and we were obviously mourning Roi. I looked at those lyrics and knew everything was going to be okay. :)

I hope that you're doing well-

No don't cry if it's too high. I'll lift you up we'll make it, make it.

p.s. 51 times with you Roi, 19 Alpine's for me and only 17 for you not fair. Just like the other true fans, you have been part of my life through some great highs and terrible lows. The one constant has always been DMB jammin'. It always has a way of making it all go away if only for a small time.
