So many times in OT they should have taken the shot but instead made an extra, unnecessary pass. It was bewildering to watch.

Avalanche IR right now:

Rantanen
Landeskog
Grubauer
Zadorov
Wilson
Francouz

That's the #1 AND #2 goalie, not to mention 2/3 of their top line. Thank goodness for good off-season acquisitions to fill out the depth, and a #3 goalie who came in and stopped 40 shots on his way to preserving the shutout in his first NHL game.

Oh, and a rookie defenseman who is point-per-game.

The Avs' Calvert takes a shot to the head, is down on the ice in obvious distress (and he's a TOUGH customer already - dude's not gonna fake it), but because Vancouver had control of the puck, the refs let play continue. Eventually led to a Canucks goal. Even Elias Petersson, who was the guy who took the shot, kept trying to signal to the refs that Calvert was hurt.

Interesting article where players gave their opinion on what the league should do in situations like this.

I was baffled when I saw that play out. It is one of those judgement calls, as the rule states:

"In the case where it is obvious that a player has sustained a serious injury, the Referee and/or Linesman may stop the play immediately.”

I would think getting hit in the head, resulting in blood gushing out is serious, but that's just me.

Not saying Calvert did this at all, but the main issue would be players faking or making the injury seem more serious at the time in order to get a stoppage.

But :lol at MacKinnon's quote: "I can only imagine if that was LeBron James"

Kadri has been so great for the Avs. Plays any role he's asked, with whoever he happens to be with (all the injuries have really prevented anyone from getting into a groove with linemates), being a leader, etc. But what I'm most impressed with his discipline. No bone-headed plays that hurt the team, no mouthing off. Just hard work. I don't know if it's team culture or Kadri just seeing an opportunity to reinvent himself or maybe a combination of both, but it's pretty cool to see him rounding out.

Sometimes you just wanna see it through with what you have, not mess with the team dynamics. What’s the Herb Brooks line? “I’m not looking for the best players, I’m looking for the right players.” He’s shown a lot of belief in his roster and I’d like to see where it can go. Even if it means passing on a player like Hall.

Not to mention Sakic’s built a SUSTAINABLE team stocked with prospects. What the Coyotes gave up for Hall is a helluva haul for a rental and would have gone a long way to undo what Sakic has carefully built if it were him pulling the trigger. Making a trade like that goes against his whole philosophy over the past 3-4 seasons.

The D.C. blueliner, who turns 30 on Jan. 10, is having one of the best offensive seasons for a defenseman in NHL history, particularly after adjusting for leaguewide scoring levels. He’s also having one of the most valuable D-man campaigns in NHL history if we account for the rest of his stats. Basically, by any metric, Carlson is making history.
