I think it's kind of a toss up for the few teams looking for a goalie... Brodeur, Halak, and Bryz (and Maybe Luongo) will be heading to any combination of Minny, Montreal (rental only), and Washington.

EDIT: From Proteau :lol
Adam Proteau ‏@Proteautype 55s Wild goalie Ilya Bryzgalov. Now that's a perfect sentence.

Easy to say now, but our goaltending should be much improved next year.

Depending on his contract status/signability, I would take him on LI. Need an upgrade for next year and going forward.

I'm just checking to the tracker hourly for news on vanek and amac. Anything less than 2 good assets for vanek would be a failure.

Not crazy about the idea, considering Philly needs more defensive help. But hey, it's Ryan Kesler.

Erat requested a trade earlier and the Caps certainly want to be rid of him. But his play + salary might render him untradeable.

That Erat/Forsberg trade, in hindsight, has to be one of the worst of last season's deadline (for the Caps).

They could take on about $3mil. So someone would have to be going back. Philly seems to have very little patience with things.

Yeah. Sometimes it's just best to wait and let the guys you have mature. But again, I'm a Wings fan who has seen 4 Cups in the last 16 years or whatever. Maybe the Wings don't feel the pressure Philly does. But even looking back at 1996 when they still hadn't won, they were making moves to better themselves, not just trying to get some big name.

Kesler is a smoke screen. They want to drive up the price of Kesler so the Penguins make the biggest deal possible.

Probably the worst trade of McPhee's career in Washington. Although I am of the very strong opinion that Martin Erat has been substantially better for the Caps than people give him credit for. He's been very much misused by Adam Oates and was constantly getting scratched in favor of shit players like Laich and Brouwer. I would want out too.

The whole Erat situation is a huge mess and I don't really blame him for any of it

Also, Kuznetsov's KHL team missed the playoffs, so if he can work out a deal with his club to skip the loser playoffs (which it sounds like he wants to do), we may see him in a Caps sweater very soon

Re: The NHL 2013-14 Thread

Some Avs notes that I know very few will care about:

- Joe Sakic told LeBrun today that Ryan O'Reilly will not be moved at the deadline and that both sides have agreed to finish out the season and talk in the summer. Sakic said O'Reilly wants to stay, which seems to be consensus among reinvigorated Avs players right now.

- Sakic also said the team will not be shopping the rental market and will only make a deal if someone comes to them with an offer they can't pass up (i.e., a top 4 d-man)

- Paul Stastny told reporters today he definitely does not want to leave Avs and will take a hometown discount in contract negotiations over the summer in order to stay.

- From Avs reporter Adrian Dater: "Avs getting lots of calls from teams. Gonna be an interesting next 24 hours on Stastny"

Still think PA Parenteau is their most expendable player, but he has played great since the break. More and more, I like the idea of the Avs sticking with who they've got. Let them continue to grow together. The defense by committee approach has been much better than expected.

HallowBillies7 03-04-2014 12:31 PM

He's a serviceable player who can play in just about any situation. The last 2-3 seasons he hasn't played well (just like the rest of the Avs), so it was assumed a change in scenery might be needed. With his value still relatively high, he was the perfect trade bait for the Avs.

However, his play this year (just like the rest of the Avs) has been exceptional. His contract is up after this season, and while he's still set to do well, he's not expected to make as much as he was (unless the Flyers offer him a contract, that is), which makes him attractive to other clubs.

But with him being an important piece of the Avs puzzle and a key team leader, I think he stays and re-signs at a hometown discount. Only possibility he moves is if a top 4 d-man suddenly becomes available, and probably not a rental at that.

No I love the shit. Even the crazy ones are fun to think about. I always wonder about the deals that were talked about, or even close, that didn't happen. Still wonder what the Wings offered to CBJ for Nash or what the first talks with Weber were.

Edit: Also loved hearing Keenan saying he had a 1 for 1 with Boston, Jumbo Joe for Lou, and the FLA owner said no since he'd be taking money back...for Joe FUCKING Thornton! I understand the business side for a small non-traditional market but how much better could that team have been?

Holmgren gonna Holmgren. Will probably all work out for Philly if they can re-sign him. He'll probably command $3-4 million/year which isn't overpriced.

Just goes to show how much defenseman command on the market. Those guys are top priority. I mean, everyone saw the frenzy that was caused by Suter hitting the open market.

That's what makes the Oduya rumors interesting. Legit top 4 defenseman are hard to come by.

No, but I'd be asking for it too. The prices are so much higher than they used to be with teams closer together in the standings and the cap. MacDonald 10 years ago? Maybe a 3rd rounder.

True but he really is barely a top 4 and on a top 10, he is a 3rd pair. Wish he resigned because he is a solid 2nd pAir for us but he won't be worth the money he gets. He is going to block a lot of shots but makes a lot of mistakes near his own net and is not very physical. Decent 2nd pair dman on the pp, too.

Yeah, I don't know how you can get rid of both of those guys.

Are you really a prospect at 24? AHL fodder.

Best news on luongo is that Fla should pass. Isles now which means better draft pick :D

Everyone else called him a prospect haha.

And Florida is so dumb in giving up on Markstrom.

Rumors coming out that the reason for Kesler/Luongo getting to this point is huge conflicts with Torts.

So how long until Vancouver riots?

Torts is a terrible coach. So awesome he's in Vancouver.

Sooooooo happy for Luongo.

This is what I was guessing.

Yeah, the Canucks have given up on this year. Kesler will be gone tomorrow.

How much longer can Gillis keep his job with the mess he's created?

EDIT: Might as well unload Edler too at this point.

Lol. No, I know. I think they call anyone in a trade not in the NHL a prospect.

As for Markstrom, I agree. Even though it seems like we've been hearing about him forever and he hasn't "arrived", its too early for a team in fla's situation

Re: The NHL 2013-14 Thread

The Panthers are in a tough spot, so I don't blame them too much for trading for Luongo, even at the expense of Backstrom. On one hand, they want to rebuild and stock the roster with young talent. On the other hand, they don't have the luxury of being in a hockey-crazy market who will support them through tough times, like the Oilers and Flames. Basically, the Panthers need to put butts in seats to remain financially viable, and marketable players will do that. They can market the hell out of Luongo, and should see some success doing it. He won't instantly sell out the rink, but he will help.

Unfortunately, this is a short-term solution to a very long-term problem for a team like the Panthers.

Seriously...to both of these. Torts's whole thing has gotten tired and old.

Also, as fun as it was to hate on ol' Bobby Lou during the heat of the Canucks/Blackhawks rivalry, the guy has been nothing but class about the whole thing. Heart goes out to him.

I'd be so upset if I were a Canucks fan. James Mirtle made a great point when he said:

"If I'm a Canucks fan, what worries me is management seems to have no plan here. Why deal Schneider in June then do this? It's nuts."

There seems to be no real direction in the front office, then again, I think they didn't see this season playing out this way. I think they thought they would be top 3 in the West again.

I mean, it's not like Lack is a scrub, but this thing is crazy.

Important part is the bolded, especially considering what Matty just said. Markstrom might turn out to be a hell of a talent, but it's not working out as well as they would have liked yet, and Bobby Lou is a big name that Panthers fans know already.

Seems like a good haul for the Panthers to me, especially considering Vancouver is retaining part of the salary.

Re: The NHL 2013-14 Thread

This is a classic Dale Talon move. He's a GREAT GM for markets that aren't exactly thriving. You need to spend money, and bring in names to try and get the team in contention. He knows that, and Bobby Lou was a big win for FLA.

Vancouver in full melt down mode as well.

:thumbsup (And obviously I meant Markstrom in my post before, not Backstrom. Sorry)

Luongo's "star" power mixed with his past history with the club will be one of the bigger draws the Panthers have had in a while. They can market every single game like a playoff game for the rest of the season probably... "Luongo's first game in a Panthers uniform against the Sabres in 12 years!" or whatever. It's silly, but it's what they will do. And they should.

Edit: how do the Canucks go from Schneider and Luongo to Eddie Lack all in less than a year? Bad moves.

Great day for Lou. Never been so happy for a non-Red Wings move. Didn't even think about Thomas and him together. Wonder who will be pumping whose tires. lol

I really hope Pirri settles in to a role there. They have some talent and some draft picks to make the future happen.

Blackhawks get David Rundblad from the Phoenix Coyotes of Glendale in Arizona.

Not sure why.

lockman21 03-04-2014 02:47 PM

Re: The NHL 2013-14 Thread

Honestly feel like this is the start of a bigger deal, needing to add a defenseman to the roster before dealing another one.

Could obviously be wrong though. A 2nd round pick seems like a lot for Rundblad.

I hope so, too. It really sucks to see them floundering like this for so long. I just want something good to happen for them.
