Ehhhhh. Panthers are just so not good. Easily going to be worst team in the playoffs, to me. Yeah yeah I know they have more pts than a team or two. But they aren't good. They have nobody in the same league as Kovalchuk and Parise. Devils, if anything, are underrated coming into this playoffs IMO.

That doesn't mean they can't win a series. 1993-94 Sharks were 33-35-16 and knocked off Detroit, led Toronto 3 games to 2 and hit a crossbar in OT of Game 6, and had dominated Vancouver that year. They could easily have been in the Finals against NYR.

Yeah but looking at how SJ finished they only lost twice in the last 13 and only 5 times in the last 20. Not quite like the Panthers right now.

Oh and Bob Essensa sucked ass and Ozzie wasn't ready for prime time. A few years ago game 7 was on and I watched it, to throw up maybe, and thought wow that was bad.

Fact that you have to back that far to find a mediocre team who made some noise kind of proves his point.

Main thing I remember about that game other than the misplay on the game-winner was Fedorov being a punk and going after I think it was Jay More near the end.

If he's below 99, it's not by that much. If Gretzky gets cancer in the middle of the season, I don't think he scores 160 points and wins the scoring title in that same season. That stat will always blow my mind.

Edit: ^ Transitive property (maybe?) for the win! Though if the Pens fall to the Flyers, the Rangers likely wouldn't get the Flyers until Round 3, because I do not see the Devils falling to the Panthers. But it's the playoffs! Crazy shite happens.

The greatest to ever play, no doubt. Though given the first choice in an all-time fantasy draft, I still might pick Lemieux. I'll readily admit my bias because he is the reason the Pens continue exist, and I saw him play in person, a lot. He had all the skills and intangibles in just the right combination. He just didn't have the health, between a rare bone disease, a horrific back and Hodgkin's disease. He only played in 915 regular season games.

Though when you get to the level of greatness of a Gretzky, Lemieux, Howe, Orr, I find it hard to rank. They're all really freaking great.

Hawks would still take 5th with a win in regulation over Detroit. It would tie the two teams in points and ROW, and Hawks hold head-to-head tiebreaker. Personally, I hope we get to 100 pts and beat the Wings in OT. Let them face the Preds, I'd rather see LA/Phx/SJ.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

As for the Lemieux vs. Gretzky debate, I've always fell on the side of Mario and that is surely no knock on Gretzky. Kind of hard to knock the Great One. Wayne's numbers were absolutely ridiculous but he did play in the biggest offensive era in NHL history. Gretzky also never won anything without Messier and played with one of the biggest collections of talent in expansion era.

Mario, meanwhile put up superhuman numbers early on playing with the likes of Rob Brown and Wendell Young, not Kurri, Messier and Coffey. IF he remained healthy, his numbers would be a lot better and would loved to have seen where he wound up. And the last 1/3rd of his career was during the trap and clutch & grab era. He was still dominant.

Off the ice, yeah Mario saved the Penguins but by Wayne going to LA, he saved that franchise and enabled the NHL to expand and make hockey work in so many other markets the NHL never dreamed it could expand to. Sort of a wash.

I'm a Mario guy. Watched that five goal game live vs the Rags back in 1993. Amazing. How my Islanders beat him and that team to deny them the chance for a 3 peat sadly remains the highlight of my Islander fandom. Was just a little too young for those cups teams. What a series.

good to see reads cut the throats of the sabers last night. the phantoms play here where i live. he was crazy during his 5 games with us last year, scored like 9 goals in his first 5 professional games. knew that was the last we'd see of him after that.

He's probably been the biggest surprise for the Flyers this season. It happens a lot where college players light the lamp in the AHL, but often times don't find the net in the NHL.

Read's speed (say that five times fast) is incredible and allows him to get chances like he did last night.

As always the "best ever" conversation is an extremely difficult, almost fruitless conversation to have, although it is fun to debate. The reason why is the different eras in which they played. Gordie Howe would not be as productive in today's NHL as he was in his era, nor would Gretzky (although I'm the first to admit they'd be pretty amazing because of the passion they brought to the game and their natural skillsets, i.e. Gretzky's uncanny vision).

To me, it comes down to two things when deciding best ever:
1) How would their game translate to other hockey eras. Would they still be effective?
2) What have they done for the game, aside from statistical production?

The Rocket, IMO, was the first real flashy superstar of the NHL. He took the game to a whole new level with his style of play and even the grit with which he played. He was an all-around hockey player if there ever was one. Gordie Howe really pioneered the power forward role. Gretzky completely turned the game upside down... defensive and goaltending styles adapted essentially because of what he brought. Hockey's major expansion into the US, particularly out west, can be directly traced to his move to LA. Lemieux built on that and was such a dynamic, unimaginable force because of his combination of size and speed.

To me, though, it comes down to Bobby Orr. Completely changed the way the game was played by showing that defensemen could participate in the offense. Other teams had to adapt to try and stop him, which has evolved into the team defensive schemes you see today. The idea of a skating defensemen who not only came within the blue line but participated offensively was almost unheard of before then. Not only that, but he was a dandy player in his own end as well.

Also, I'm convinced Bobby Orr would still be pretty effective in today's NHL. Players are bigger and faster, thus making Orr more containable, but I think his natural skills would still make him a force even today.

Just my unsolicited, Friday morning two cents :)

im actually going to push as rinaldo for the biggest surprise. he's a goon, but has actually contributed offensively. last year against albany, first period, he got 3 5 for fighting's game misconduct and a 3 game suspension. looked like adam sandler on skates. but he lost some weight, and showed he actually wanted to better his talent..or lack of.

Probably unsportsmanlike conduct. I don't think its too many men because hes not on the ice.

i did some research

Rule 56 - Interference

56.3 Bench Minor Penalty - A bench minor penalty shall be imposed when an unidentifiable player on the players’ bench or penalty bench or any Coach or non-playing Club personnel who, by means of his stick or his body, interferes with the movements of the puck or any opponent on the ice during the progress of the play.

I believe it would be called as an Interference penalty if I remember correctly... but I've never had to make a call like that, so I'm not completely sure. :lol

EDIT: Yep, it's interference: http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=26348

no worries...yeah, i wasn't sure if it'd be interference or too many men on the ice...oh well.

ps tort's press conference after the game was funny. everyone bitches in hockey. of course everyone is going to hear about the penguins bitching when they have two of the biggest stars in the league and are a very popular organization. :lol but, Orpik is one of my favorite players from the AHL and I will even admit that that wasn't the brightest play I've ever seen.

I've been reffing for almost ten years, and if that happened on my watch, I'd definitely have to go to the score table and thumb through the rule book a bit. Few things are more embarrassing than that. :lol

I'm a big fan of Orpik, definitely don't think he's the villain guys like Biron made him out to be in his post-game comments, but that hit was definitely dangerous. I've watched it a few times and it's tough to tell if it was intentional or not, but the fact remains that it was dangerous and could have been avoided. Deserving of the penalty he got.
