Been a fan for a long time, been to about 5 shows (all during the "big 3" era), and been lurking this site for a long time. In regards to the band I have a ton of respect for the opinions and knowledge of this community.

I thought this would be a good idea that could spark some new debate. I'll start...


I like Stolen Away. Could never really understand all the hate it gets around here. I'll be honest, I'm no musician, and know very little about the technical side to it...is it a poorly crafted song from a musical perspective or something?

Sweet is overrated? I thought most people around here disliked it...I was about to say it was underrated actually, I like the song a lot

Also:
I like Eh Hee and WTWE, but never got into Typical Situation

Not exactly a DMB opinion, but I think that TR3 is one of the worst live bands out there. The way most people talk about them in here, it's like they're a top touring act. Maybe I caught the one bad show or something, but geez, half of the audience left the show by the time I did, which was about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way through the show.

I was listening to LT8 the other day and I really miss Butch on #41. Wow, what great fills. I complained about long solos all the time at shows, but I miss Butch playing along to most songs. Also, I think Shotgun is a turd, and that's a pretty unpopular opinion around here.

Out Of My Hands does not get enough love around here. It is a decent song, not great, but imo top 3 Stand Up.

Two Step should be 8 mins at most.

Daves screaming where falsettos once shined is extremely annoying.

Dave Matthews is NOT conceited.

This is my unpopular opinion: Busted Stuff > tLWS.

EDIT: except some specifical parts of tLWS, generally i like more busted stuff as a whole

You Never Know is the most overrated song in the catalog (So Right is a very close 2nd). I think this b/c while most people think the lyrics are genius, I'm of the opinion that Dave shit them out with little to no thought at all.

Also (while I hate the ED album) I enjoy Angel... even the extended versions with the ladies.

I really hope Butch comes back one day.

I don't really care for the trumpet sound in DMB, although I think Rashawn is a musical genius and essential to the band's success.

Crazy Easy is a top 10 DMB song.

Would die happy if I never paid to hear Cornbread again and only heard Watchtower every 10 shows. Will never ever park in Hartford again and suspect that WH SPAC lower pavilion are like Giants tickets - only "family" gets them.

I like Stolen Away, Old Dirt Hill
I think Everyday is a pretty good album and isn't really comparable to the big three because of the differences in sound (its almost like a different band)
I think Stand up had/has potential (EWU got better didn't it)
This isnt unpopular but Captain could have been the best DMB song ever if they kept it the way it was from tLWS
I like the Live at Luther College version of Minarets the best
I think Beach Ball is the best song from the BW era

DMB gets a pass by an incredible amount of fans in terms of the quality of music they put out...myself included. What I mean is that if OAR or some other band had released AFTW I would hate it, but I currently consider somewhere between tolerable and decent.

I do not think there is anything special at all about #40, sub par riff where dave sings with the notes, were all here because we love how dave sings over crazy riffs with crazy tempos. It isnt just because I dont like the fact that its short and unstructured (I love Little Thing), but to me this song is redundant and boring

Every time I think about this, I get sad because it is soooo true.



Also, DMB is not nearly as good as they used to be. Face it. We're all putting more money into a worse band. I still love the band, but I wish I could have seen them in the early days.


And the crowds at shows, wayyy more often than not, suck a bag of dicks.



Even with all of this, I'm giddy with excitement each time I get an opportunity to see them live.

--Listener Supported is no good. Lovely Ladies + Roi's off notes make for an off night. I'd rather eat garbage than listen to this show.

I agree with all of this. The first shows I went to were 99-01, which IMO were
he best the band ever put out. The shows today are not even close. That being said, I still enjoy a DMB show as much as any I go to, it just isn't the same. I also agree about Rashawn. Extremely talented musician, but overbearing. Like the straw that broke the camel's back sometimes. I'd much rather have a keyboard in the band than a trumpet.

meh, core 5 was their best era. One of the most unique things to happen to popular music in a long time.

Also I'll take BW over Everyday any day of the week, by miles and miles.

I'm a fan of Stolen Away. Not so much the drum machine, but mostly for the sax/violin interplay. The way BT and Roi weave in and out of each other on that tune is absolutely gorgeous.

Halloween is one of, if not the most over-rated song in the catalog. This song is equal to Dreamgirl in terms of listen-ability.

no thats legit. i was just asking because one of the reasons why i like stefan is because he isn't lazy. if it weren't for him, Dave would be playing dream girl instead of minarets, just to name one example.

I can't get even remotely excited about listening to the band live these days. (Though I do like AFTW)

I enjoy getting Cornbread at a show, even the millionth time. I don't go to a ton of shows each summer so that probably helps, and seeing as I only hear it at a show (never on my own listening time), I get into it.

Seek Up, while lyrically might be Dave's best work, is way too long and boring. They need to dramatically decrease the 12 minute jam at the end and virtually eliminate the jam at the beginning.

I thoroughly enjoy Rashawn's trumpet work. Of course I'd rather it be the way it was before, but I will say I've grown to like it quite a bit.

I think YMDT is completely awful. I know it's not considered one of the best by anyone, but most people seem to at least like it, and I find it to be completely miserable. Nothing good about that song for me.

I think Baby Blue is the best song Dave has written since tLWS.

gotcha, and i certainly don't dislike that about stefan. i think what i dislike is how much into himself he has gotten the past few years, seems like a lot has to do with social media.

but completely agree about dave vs. stefan in the category you mentioned :thumbsup

and i will never forget when stefan said that. really made me think poorly of dave. "hey dave, don't we bring back minarets?"....dave starts noodling....."wow this reminds me of dreamgirl" :BANG

wow when was this? I must've missed this tweet or something. As a guitar player though, I can tell you that the riffs are extremely similar and even in the same key (although Minarets is interesting while Dreamgirl is a recycled staple of western music).

Also, I absolutely love Stolen Away, but wish the drum machine wasn't on it

I don't enjoy the 41 jams, they go nowhere and they seem to go on forever at shows

I really like the studio versions of dreamgirl, out of my hands, and steady as we go

LWS Grey street sucks. Lyrics are nonsense

Angel is a good song with a fantastic guitar riff

I haven't listened to UTTAD in years

Studio two step is great and my go to two step if I don't have 20 minutes to listen to a recent live version
