I hate to sound like Eklund right now, but I have my sources. You guys should know me by now--I don't make stuff up. He's not getting 7 mil a season.

EDIT: The Flyers just came out, according to Panotch, and denied it.

The NHL boards I look at are hysterical right now. Half the Flyers fans are in denial and the other half are pissed off.

Even at a cap number of $5-6mil, I can't imagine it less than that, it's still questionable in my mind. One rumor out there had the 7-8 years but a number around 5mil I think. I can't imagine a short-term deal at $5mil or so cap hit. It would be dumb on Bryz's side of things. Do the Flyers really want to sign someone else up for 7 years? Still got Pronger for 6 years and the midget for 4 more. Right now he just screams past Flyers goalies based off his last two playoffs.

From the Flyers FB page:

Amidst the reports, the following statement is from Flyers GM Paul Holmgren: "We are continuing to try and reach an agreement with Ilya, but it is safe to say that we are not close to achieving this.”

Even if they were close they can't/won't announce it for at least 9 more days.

:thumbsup Yup. They still have to pay Pronger until he is in adult diapers and drinking prune juice, and have NO CAP ROOM.

I would say that when Bryz gets signed the Flyers window will be very small to win a cup because they won't be getting any younger.

:thumbsup Even if he signs for something like 5.5 or 6, if he gets 7 years the Flyers will be in cap hell with his deal and Pronger's deal still on the books in a few years.

I really don't like the move for the Flyers, at all. I understand that there aren't really goalies to be had in the free agent market, but they are seriously handicapping themselves in the future if they make this signing.

I don't know what the Flyers young goalies are like but Bobrovsky will be gone. You aren't going to have him as your backup for 7 years.

From what I have read/can tell, not good.

Hovinen isn't anything to write home about, just a gigantic guy in net. Most of their other 'tenders are older.

First it's LINDstrom and now Marty St. Louis, as in they pronounced it like the city. God I miss the CBC days. Yeah it was "boring" but you didn't have these morons talking about crap they didn't know. The only good presenters were Kevin Smith and Robin Scherbatsky, er I mean Cobie Smulders and of course Terrible Ted and Schneids.

Congrats to the greatest defenseman that ever lived on Norris Trophy #7. He can tie Bobby next year.

Easy. They'll trade prongers contract to some team that needs to get to the cap floor.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

All the respect in the world to Nick Lidstrom (one of my favorite all-time players) and Dan Bylsma, but IMO Shea Weber was the best defenseman in the league this year, and Barry Trotz is long overdue for a coach of the year award.

I'm not saying Bylsma doesn't deserve it, especially with how he was able to keep a team together through a slew of injuries. I'm also not saying Lidstrom didn't deserve it... at 40 years of age and playing like he is, he deserves heaps of praise. But I would've given it to Trotz - who has instilled a culture of winning and hard work with a very average roster in an obviously non-hockey environment - and Weber, who is the best all-around defenseman in the game right now.

Not a big deal, not crying about it, just wanted to weigh in.

Too bad Peter forgot the bolded

If this deal is signed I believe Bryzgalov would have a bigger cap hit than any goalie in the NHL.

Absolutely. Carter is either Mr. Invisible and/or Mr. Glass once the playoffs start. I would be doing back flips down Broad St if the Flyers could unload him for picks or role players. Leino was brutal last year. Yea, he had a great playoff run in '10 but he was beyond bad in '11. The decisions he would make with the puck made Matt Carle look like a fucking genius (who is one of the dumbest players to wear the orange and black in recent memory). I would shed not a tear if the Flyers let Leino walk

I know the Flyers signing Bryz puts a strain on the cap, but if they can turn some off their other players (Carter) into draft picks and use them wisely they should be able to get off better than people are expecting

You guys are banking this whole idea on the notion that the Flyers can easily trade a guy that's under contract through 2022.

You don't think there is someone who would be willing to take a 26 year old who has scored 29, 46, 33, and 36 goals in his last four years?

Oh, I'm sure someone will. I probably phrased that wrong/weird.

I'm more talking about the notion that they can get decent draft picks/fair value for Carter when he has that ridiculously long contract.

With his ridiculous contact it could be a tougher sell for teams.

At the end of the day, the guy isn't worth the contract that Philly gave him last November. Sure, he scores goals, but he won't be doing that 11 years from now. It's going to be tough to get the same value (picks or players) for the guy because of that.

Oh, and don't forget that starting in 2012, he has a full no trade clause until 2015, so that's creeping up too.

That's a very good point. I really don't expect the Flyers to get "fair value" for Carter. I'd be happy just to get decent draft picks and/or some role players that won't be a liability on the ice. I'm not a big fan of Carter and I think his money can be better used to improve other aspects of the team.

Carter also has a NTC clause that kicks in once the 2012 season starts so now is the time to move him

The Jackets could use some help for Nash. I know that was a rumor a while ago and it makes sense in that way.

Also this was on the subject of realignment.

http://www.ottawasun.com/2011/06/22/...-major-changes

Not sure how this would work to get Columbus and Detroit in the East and still have a 15/15 split. Obviously not close to a done deal but I'm glad they are trying to be creative. Honestly the travel is the biggest thing for me. The West really gets screwed no matter who they are. I mean even if you take CBJ and DRW out San Jose still has to go to Chicago and Nashville twice a year and that's brutal compared to any trip in conference a team in the East has to do. The whole talk of more balanced schedule interests me the most.

interesting ideas. I guess somebody else would have to come west, or another team in the East (Florida) would have to come West.

I'm glad they're getting creative as well, but I don't see it getting that crazy.
