everything is meticulously researched and tested to find the sweet spot when it comes to prices. if they thought they could get more revenue by lowering ticket prices, they would.

especially in baseball, there will always be small crowds when:

1. school is still in session. once the young ones are out for summer, stadiums start filling up

2. there is cold/rainy weather...we usually see this in april/may or even in the winter for hockey games. (a big storm even cancelled some games this year) we've had small crowds at pens games when a big snow storm would hit

3. the team is really bad from the get-go (this goes for all sports)

Agreed. There was a time when the Panthers were practically giving away tickets and they still couldn't even get to 50% capacity. They stopped doing that, started winning, and voila.

I was going to cite the Pirates and the Pens. You couldn't give away Pens tickets 2001-2004. They draft Sid and now they have a 421 game sellout streak.

Except at Wrigley. I read an article once that someone did a study and Cubs ticket sales were more closely correlated to the price of beer at the stadium than to winning %. In the same city, the White Sox ticket sales were more correlated to the team's winning % than beer prices.

You are not missing much, that place is now a monument to corporate greed IMO. I have been there exactly once and only went because my cousin bought me a ticket for my birthday, I have no plans of returning anytime soon unless the ticket is free.

Reason I compared it to a cruise is because last year I went on an 8 day eastern Caribbean cruise that left out of Manhattan. Between the ticket price, the train into Grand Central, the cab to the pier, the taxes, the port fees, the fuel fees, the food and the alcohol program it cost me about $550 - plus a couple hundred more for some shore excursions, casino time, cigars, booze, smokes and other stuff you can't get around here.

That's interesting because I don't ever remember the beer at Wrigley being cheap.

I honestly can't remember what years it looked at and how long the study was. I wish I could find it again. I'll look later. I think I read it as part of a class in either college or law school.

Found it. Apparently I read about it in the book Scorecasting, which I highly recommend. It's like Freakonomics but for sports. Anyway, here's an article about the Wrigley thing.

Seen 3 games there , including a playoff win in 2009 and was there for the islanders game vs Rag$. I , too, was more disappointed than not about the whole place.

THAT'S what they should write at center ice! If I had any skill with photoshop, I'd post that on twitter immediately. I hope someone does that.

It's funny reading fans get legitimately pissed off over the name of the arena and that they didn't use some historic figure. All of us here don't like it but totally get it and never assume it would be anything other than some corporate name. Would I love it to be like Gordie Howe Arena or something like that? Sure. But what world do you live in that that actually happened recently? Fans need to pull themselves into reality sometimes.

That's great but my Cal not going anywhere. Can't have De Haan either.

While on the subject of Cal, while Neiderreiter is maturing and a decent scorer, I don't think our team would as good with him over Clutterbuck. I still like our side of that trade. Guess it worked out for both teams, you can say.

Rant continuing.... A friend just posted about it on facebook and said they could have gone away from corporate name (uh huh, ok) you had Olympia and Joe Louis...I want to comment but have no way of not sounding like an asshole. Olympia was built in 1927 and The Joe opened in 1980. That's like pissed that your parents paid $70k for a house while the same house today costs $220k. Would I love to pay that much? Sure. Am I sitting around expecting that should happen? Fuck no.

Do the Penns have some weird connection to Andrew WK like the Caps do to Enrique Iglesias?

That would be awesome

I can't think of any pizza puns for De Haan, so I'm not interested in him in Detroit.

Deep Paan...that's a stretch.

Nope. Just Cal.

Only that they picked his song as the new goal song this season.
