I am not surprised he didn't get suspended because I'm just not. But $2500? Are you fucking kidding me? That's less than .1% of what he makes a year. That would be like me getting fined about $25. Oh please don't take away those 2 DVD's I could buy. Players safely my ass.

If it wasn't Shea Weber I wonder how many games he would have got.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

It's because he wasn't injured.

What a crock. So by that logic after this:

Chris Simon should have got nothing since Hollweg played next game. It's fine.

Basing suspensions on whether or not the guy got injured is the most asinine thing Shannahan does. The hit is just as dirty whether or not the guy gets hurt.

How many of these commentators are really good? Not that many. Doc has one of the best voices in the game (even if he misses some names occasionally).

Can't stand NBC when Darren Pang is announcing though. "Holy jumpin" is he a fucking blow hole.

Chris Cuthbert from TSN and formerly CBC is my fave, outside of the Wings Ken Daniels, for some reason. Even if he couldn't say Fetisov right.

You are right not many are 100%. Honestly closest thing for me was Bob Cole and Harry Neal back in the day on CBC. Usually unbiased and were great. A lot of people like Gary Thorne and so do I but sometimes he could be over the top with calls.

A slam to the head is a slam to the head whether the player is fine or his head falls off.

$2,500 is the most allowed under the CBA in a non-suspension fine.

Which makes sense, because that's how much they all spend on dinner on a given night.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

This also encourages teams to exaggerate the initial diagnosis especially in the playoffs. Knowing that the hearing was today, what if the Wings came out and said he was displaying potential "concussion like symptoms" and then after the suspension was handed down retracting the comments and saying he'd be ready to go for game 2.

No wonder the NHLPA was ok with this CBA. That's what makes it a bigger crock. So it's $2500 or suspension. Sorry the act was closer to suspension worthy than $2500 worthy.

I've always preached this as well. It's not the injury, it's the act. It's on the person hitting, not the one being hit.

Weber is still my boy, but he should've gotten at least a game for two reasons: It was dirty, and to set a precedence.

Even with him on the ice for Game 2, I have a feeling there will be no serious retaliation from the Wings. They may play him harder, but I don't expect any fights. It's the Red Wings and it's the playoffs. 'Nuff said. Not saying their pussies, but they tend to take vengeance through the scoreboard.

I agree that he should have been suspended for a game. However $2500 fine is the highest they can go without suspension so the figure doesn't bother me. Love Weber and I'll continue too but one game out would have sent a better message. That being said, I'm glad he's not suspended for selfish reasons.

Exactly. Like I was saying, guys like Abdelkader will fight, but he's way out of his weight class against Weber. Bigger dudes on the team like Holmstrom and Ericsson just aren't fighters. Nothing serious will happen.

Lost in all of this was Pekka Hasek's heroics last night, particularly against Zetterberg. Holy crap.

:lol

It's kind of ridiculous, but then again the league shouldn't be able to arbitrarily fine guys however much they want. There has to be a limit. IMO, it should be more like a % of the player's salary.

But what is totally insane, is that John Tortorella, coach, complains to the media about the Penguins and gets $20,000 fine. Shea Weber takes a guys head and smashes it into the glass (after missing on a punch) and gets $2500. Something very wrong with that.

Agree with all of this. You can't just say $400k fine but $2500? As cap geek said for someone making $50k that's $16. Oooo please don't take hurt me.

That's without factoring in bonuses/endorcements. I'm pretty sure Weber has a pretty sweet deal with Easton...or is it Reebok?

Ok, so does anyone know how much a guy will lose if he gets suspended a game? Does he get pay cut from the game he doesn't play? And what portion of his salary is that? Seems to me like there is a huge gap between being suspended 1 game and the max. fine.

I believe he does lose money from the game he doesn't play. Not sure how that works for playoffs but if you just took his 7.5mil and divided it among 82 games that's $91k a game. A little different than $2500 huh?

It's a percentage of their salary. It gets REALLY messy when you start talking about playoff games, but during the regular season you take their salary and divide it by 82.

For example, Duncan Keith is being paid $8 million this year, so:

$8,000,000/82=$97,560.98*5=$487,804.88

So that's what Keith missed out on for those 5 games.

It blows me away that people get paid nearly 100k to go play a game for a few hours... Obviously there's practice, travel, etc. involved. But still... wow
