Oilers magic number (Wins and Kings losses) is at 7. I haven't heard 'mathematically eliminated' as per usual this time of year and by josh, that's a good thing.

I think he is specifically referring to Montreal, who's prize for winning the Atlantic will be drawing a team with a better record than them in round one

Just to further drive home how hocus pocus the playoff format is, let's say the playoffs start today. If we "seed" according to 1-8 but keep the current matchups, round one in the east features:

1 seed (WSH) hosting 8 seed (TOR)

This is where it stops making sense.

We also would see:

2 seed (PIT) hosting 3 seed (CBJ)
5 seed (MTL) hosting 4 seed (NYR)
6 seed (OTT) hosting 7 seed (BOS)

Well done, NHL. Well done.

The fact that there is 14 point difference between WC1 and WC2 with the entire top 3 in the Atlantic all in between is awesome. NHL madness at it's best.

I just dont see a convincing argument where travel and regional division play outweighs the sensibility of just ranking teams 1-8.

dude, some announcers were even talking about playing for home ice advantage... I feel like that is getting greedy, but great to be watching hockey that matters.

I affectionately refer to my avatar as the screamin' eagle and while he is the shit the logo was not my favorite, no. And yeah, the bug splat is the black one with the Capitol building. That's what it always reminded me of.

But either way welcome aboard. Prepare to be disappointed.

I'm going to suggest they pump the brakes a bit on home ice advantage. Lets just make the dance and go from there. haha

Yeah no kidding. 12 points up on the Kings with 10 games to go? Oilers could go 5-5 and the Kings 10-0 and the Kings wouldn't pass them.

My Wings can beat the best teams in the league but the worst...nah. I mean I want them to pick as high as possible to have the best choice of player but still amazing. I'd be surprised if Blash is back next year right now. However, Tatar is on a roll so he might be more tradeable now. Although now that he's playing well again, I'd rather trade Nyquist but if it gets them a good d-man that's really all that matters.

Sure, I'm a very pessimistic person with that and my team has made the playoffs for most of my life but the odds are (forever) in your favor. I always expect the worst for whatever reason. But Kings go 8-2, the Oilers need to go 2-7-1 to stay ahead. It would be a choke job of epic levels and a run of epic levels on the Kings part to make it happen.
