For sure. Hawks heated up their back in late Feb and early March and sealed it.

I never thought the Wild were very good team all year. The advanced stats just didn't line up

As a team that has one Stanley Cup Finals appearance to their record, I don't think you're allowed to criticize a team that has won 3 Cups in a span of 7 years.

I have gotten used to his brain farts to be honest. When he is on top of his game, playing in the crease he is damn good, when he is off moving around too much he can be awful. We all know he has been there and done that on the biggest stage so hopefully he can get his head on straight before the playoffs start. Also, having Darling as a backup is a blessing, he is damn good too and would likely be a starter on many teams right now.

This plus they will have to rely on their top guns to put pucks in the net. Additionally I fully expect them to load up on D in front of the Crawford/Darling and go back to the best pairings getting 20+ minutes of ice time per game. I know Q likes to switch up the pairings but I would be surprised if he did not start game 1 with:

Keith/Seabrook
Hjarlmasson/Oduya
TVR/Campbell
Kempny or Rozsival as the 7th D man.

That is a pretty damn stacked D corps to take some pressure off the goalie.

I was just responding to concerns about Crawford's vulnerability, yeah you might be bitter but I also know you are a hockey fan so you can identify just how solid the those top 3 pairings are, in fact I would put those 3 pairings up against any defense corps in the NHL.

Sorry your Av's have not drafted all that great when it comes to D men but Barrie is going to be damn solid and I would be surprised if he did not get an A on his jersey sometime soon.

As we've discussed on a couple occassions. I would match their top 3 d-men against any in the league for sure. Still think Washington's is more complete from top to bottom. But anyways, I was mostly just joshing with you and Chris.

I'll be honest, there's not many people I want gone from the Avs more than Tyson Barrie. If he's not producing offensively (which he's not) he's of no value to the team. Absolute defensive liability. Hopefully they can trade him during the offseason before his value plummets too much.

I understand that. They've basically carried this team into first place in the West by a considerable margin.

Toews wasn't scoring until basically February, Kane can't do it alone...it's largely been the blue line. It's probably the best blue line in the NHL (at worst I could understand the argument for top 2...MAYBE 3, but probably not). Not sure where you'd think they should be ranked, but...if they win the Cup this year, one of the biggest reasons (actually, most likely the single biggest reason) will be because of that blue line.

It's not just defensively (although I could talk about that all day), but it's the transition game that almost every single coach cites as the #1 thing they talk about when gameplanning for the Hawks. They move the puck up the ice better than any other team. They're out of the defensive zone and into the offensive zone faster than you can blink all the time.

Duncan Keith still makes plays like this almost every day:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJOSunET84o
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bSmcbijpJg

I could also talk about how well they move in the offensive zone as part of Q's system, which coaches also cite as why the Blackhawks are so hard to defend.

Saying they're overrated is just silly. You put a blue line like the Ducks on this team and they're struggling to make the playoffs.

I know you were goofing around, was just giving it right back to you.

I am not sure about Barrie, sometimes he looks damn solid and other times clueless. The reason I think he has potential is because he is still pretty young and could hopefully grow into a better defensive player just like Seabrook did - people forget that when Seabrook first started he was not all that great defensively but he was putting up a ton of assists and shots on goal and eventually he turned into a far better defender than he was.

Pretty sure fans of every other team have that same fantasy. Yeah, he is not all that offense minded averaging 15-20 points per years (never getting more than 5 goals in a season) but on defense he is one of the best shutdown guys in the league. I'd say he is under-rated but for us in this thread or any informed hockey fan I think everyone knows his value. As for the casual fans who only start watching during the playoffs he is probably the best kept secret in Chicago.

lockman21 03-27-2017 04:22 PM

Re: The NHL Thread (lolcaps)

What's even more amazing about Hjalmarsson is that he has the 70th biggest cap hit for defensemen in the NHL. Keith has the 24th. It's one of the reasons Chicago can reload and still be competitive - they have two of the best defensemen and they're both extremely affordable.

Wow, really impressive comeback by the Bolts tonight. Down 4-1 with about 27 minutes to play and they tie it up just before the end of the second. Neither them or the Hawks scored in the third then Tampa wins in OT with a breakaway with 30 seconds left before a shootout.

Meh, oh well, fun game to watch - glad we got a point to go up 8 in the Central over Minnesota - I hope the Wild get crushed by the Caps tomorrow. Two costly delay of game penalties by Seabrook and Hjarlmasson (both of which resulted in goals) got Tampa back in the game.

I am well aware we have a Kings fan, she is a friend of mine - did not know we had a TB fan though. The reason I ask is because we all know the ice can get a bit sloppy in warmer climates so I am wondering if there is any correlation between geographic region and how often delay of game (for clearing the puck into the crowd by accident) penalties are called. Tried looking for stats but gave up after trying about 50 links that lead to nonsensical stuff completely unrelated to what I was curious about. Ice conditions are generally better in colder areas so I was curious if that call was less prevalent in colder areas since the ice would not get as sloppy.

I don't think you'll find any way to legitimately track a stat like that.

Probably not but a list of how often that call was made at each stadium would be an interesting set of data to play with.

Probably the same thing he's been doing after round 1.

Damn Barbs, what the hell happened there? You guys were up 4-2 with 5 minutes left and let Minnesota tie it up with 30 seconds left. Glad you won in OT but I am not sure how the hell they blew that one - probably by sitting back with their 1 or 2 goal lead not wanting to take many chances on offense and playing a lot of defense. Ugh, damn the Wild picking up another lucky point.

The 3rd goal was a bouncing puck luck goal. And the Caps made a clearing attempt, Koivu made a sick stop to keep puck in and then wide open look for the 4th

Not really the Caps melting as much as the Wild were firing on all cylinders and everything went right. Caps certainly weren't laying back

I didn't watch the game but I'd have to assume that there was this whole "two good teams at hockey" thing happening and while one team got a lead the other team was able to come back. It happens with regularity in sports.

Flyers win a shootout game, too bad they are doing too little too late. But still, 6 points isn't impossible. Come on Bruins, suck it up

Re: The NHL Thread (lolcaps)

I think the Flyers magic number for elimination is six points. So pretty much they have to win every game in regulation and the Bruins have to not win two games the rest of the season.

Wow just got a look at the offsides controversy in last night's game. Obviously the Caps won anyway so whatever but it sure does look like after they used review, they got a call wrong again. That seems to happen with too much frequency considering were holding the game up on an almost nightly basis to review this stuff.

The Caps' stars are all hot right now so hopefully that's a good sign with the playoffs coming.

I have almost felt like the Rangers play in a different division that the Caps right now. For almost 2 months I have paid more attention to the teams in the Atlantic because I knew that is where we were headed :lol

Been kind of weird to basically be in a different division. At least we are the best team in that division! It is almost like we declined home-ice for the playoffs because the Rangers home record is awful!

Yeah it feels like Montreal/Rangers has been set for a long time now. That means if we meet again this year it'll be in round 3 so let's hope for that for both our sake.

Is Shattenkirk on about a point-per-game pace right now? Seems like he's racking up the assists like mad since joining the team.

Certainly not a bad thing. If they can get past the Habs in the first, Rangers have a very high chance of making it to the ECF

He's slightly over I believe. He's quietly making things happen on the back end. I was going over the numbers a little bit, and the Caps can def keep Oshie & Shattenkirk. But Alzner and Williams would have to walk

He's had 9 assists in 12 game with the Caps which a higher than his pace with the Blues but not much, and he also hasn't scored a goal yet. He has not been a minus player for the Caps though which he was for St Louis.

In short, Shattenkirk has been good but I haven't seen a hugely significant upgrade from someone like Carlson yet. Granted I really haven't watched all that closely this season.

Oshie and Ovie have been so hot lately though it would be hard to be on the same PP unit as those guys and not get a bunch of assists. Hence why Backstrom has 10 assists in his last 5 games. Again that's not to say Sharts isn't good just that he's playing on the top unit of a really good powerplay that's hotter than usual right now.

You are just to much fun to goof with man, your reactions are great. You did miss a damn good, if a tad dirty and controversial game.

Yeah, I have seen that a lot too. Within say the past two weeks I have seen one goal the Hawks score be counted when I was sure it would be overturned for offsides and also saw one against the Hawks where the Wild guy was about 6 feet offsides and the goal stood. There is so much leeway in how they interpret control of the puck and whether a guy has actually tagged up or not plus even a lot of the video reviews are almost impossible to see when the puck actually touches the stick (black tape/black puck) on a tag up play.

Congrats to the Oilers and their fans!

Sorry that the Wings amazing streak is over.

Not sure and I do not feel like doing the math but it appears he is at or above the same production level.

He had 42 points (11 goals, 31 assists with a -11 +/-) with St. Louis in 61 games.

In 12 games with the Caps he has 9 points (0 goals, 9 assists and a plus 2) while averaging VERY slightly less ice time. As for the lack of goals, I would not worry about that one, Caps have so many weapons he doesn't need to bomb from the point like he did in STL where the team wasn't as solid offensively as WASH.

Should be a fun game tonight H2P - both our teams are limping into this one! :lol

I was counting in the 1 goal & 4 assists that he'll have tonight from the 11 goals the Caps will inevitably put up against the Avs tonight :thumbs:thumbsup

And do you really think .75 is SIGNIFICANTLY lower than 1 in such a small sample size???

This would be tough to say. You can't discredit what Nylander and Marner have done so far this year. (Excuse me for not being precise on their stats ATM, I know some might get butt hurt if I just throw number out there). They both are sort of products of the system that the Leafs are running, but you still can't discredit there production.

Also don't forget Aho and Werenski. Both those guys have had stellar rookie seasons as well. Probably not top 5 for Calder but their contributions have certainly helped their respective clubs.

This rookie class is very deep and very talented. Forgot to mention Tkachuk as well, he's having a solid year himself.

Matthews
Laine
Murray
Werenski
Marner
Nylander
Aho

thats how i see the calder shaking out
