Working on decent prices for tickets tomorrow night up in Sunrise. Sabres-Panthers games are always a blast down here because it feels like home; the ratio of Sabres:Panthers fans is about 5:1. Last time I was at a game between the two, my mom told me you could hear the Sabres fans in the crowd chanting "Let's go, Buff-a-lo!!!" on TV (by the way, the only sports chant where the city name actually fits the rhythm of the chant melody; fucking hate it to hear Boston and New York fans using that shit when it doesn't even match).

Haha, that sounds about right for Ville

This post makes no sense. Sure Leino got overpaid, but he was definitely a solid player here in Philly.

He was a solid player in the playoffs when they went to the cup.

Unfortunately, that was Ville's shinning moment.

I have never seen a top line winger get benched as much as Ville did last year during the regular season.

Total brain fart on my part that you were talking about Leino. I tend not to think of hockey players by their first names, I guess. I saw Ville and couldn't recall a player with that last name. I'll admit, I haven't heard his name called since the first game of the season...

He was off to a solid start in the beginning of last season, but he then aggravated his hip again.

Nonetheless, he robbed the Sabres' bank for sure.

I remember Wings fans upset when he went and had a great playoff because he never really stepped up here in 2009-10 but now it's like "eh." People were also questoining how they gave him up for just a crap pick and why would they. Well because they would lose him for nothing cause they 0 cap room and Franzen was coming back.

As for the Cup hangover I do believe in it. Not everyone gets it but whether it's the lack of rest or that you partied so hard that you didn't workout in the offseason like you usually do. Being a pro athlete is a lot harder than it looks. I said it a couple years ago it happens differently at different times. Some teams struggle getting out of the gate, some have it mid-season because they are thinking "God we're only at game 45 I want the playoffs" or they don't realize how hard someone is going to be gunning for them in the playoffs. For whatever reasons players sometimes forget how much work the whole season really is. The only time I didn't see the Wings not get it was after the 97 season. That accident a week later ended the party pretty quick and gave them motivation right from the beginning.

From a week ago but we were talking about it so:
http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index....has_red_w.html

Saying a lot of what I had said. Throw the Wings a bone with a better regular season schedule and if they could get a divisional format for the playoffs. According to that article though the 4 divisions didn't gain traction. I'm sure they wouldn't hurt any rivalries so not sure how they think it's a bad thing. Sounds like a more balanced schedule is coming from what Bettman said in June so no matter what every team will get at least a home and away with every team. Still don't know why it's taken this long for that part. You market Ovie and Crosby and even Stamkos a little now and some struggling teams in Dallas and Phoenix see them only every other year.

Found a seat for the Sabres-Panthers game. Stub Hub is a waste of time at that arena, since they never come close to a sellout (they only average about 11,000 fans a game; depressing when you're talking about a 19,200-seat venue). Halfway up the 400 level (the traditional 300 level is what they use to designate the luxury boxes, which also have arena seats in front of them), for less than $10 (tell me the Panthers aren't in trouble). It'll cost me more to pay for parking in the arena parking lot than it will for the actual ticket.

I don't get why Detroit is saying they are so money strapped, and then Nashville and Columbus are being thrown to the side. I understand that it costs a lot of money for the Red Wings to travel to the West, but it costs Columbus and Nashville just as much and they have far less revenue than them.

but I am all for Detroit going East. Makes the Hawks winning the division almost every year a real possibility.

I think it's more of we've been good citizen when you moved us (Wings) and Toronto to the West so now give us our due. As a fan, I hate it. I like the teams hate the start times and again more so come playoff time. What dues have the Jackets or Preds made? I think it would be stupid to move the Preds. They've finally seemed to have started something there that's working and to now move them away from teams that they've gotten accustomed to would be dumb. Columbus, it really won't matter. If they continue to suck it doesn't matter who they play.

My wish is either West or 4 divisions with divisional format if they stay west. The talk of the Jackets or Wings could be a moot point. Coyotes could be the team moving out of necessity and not need. Then the Wings and Jackets are stuck where they are.

Eh, that's not how I feel. Players get traded. That's just the nature of the business. For me, the Richards trade doesn't come anywhere close to the Rod Brind'amour trade. While I love Primeau, it felt like a gut punch when that trade was announced.

My beef with the Richards trade is this: Richards can help the team win now but Homer wanted to get depth/younger so he pulled the trigger on the deal. Since this team is built to win a Cup now, getting younger at the expense of a versatile player doesn't seem like the best idea to me. I fully acknowledge that it will be impossible to judge this trade for 1-2 years. The trade will ultimately come down to two things: 1). How does Schenn turn out? 2). How much will Schenn be able to contribute during the next two years.

Only time will tell......

As for why I defend Richards, I just get annoyed when people say he was a cancer (he wasn't) and he was traded because he parties too much/was a bad captain)

Richards is a better leader than Bob Clarke!!!1!

Is that the response you expected? Nah, Richards should have kept the "A" a while longer and Pronger should have taken Richards up on his offer for the "C" when Stevens got canned.

Leadership has never been a problem with this team.

As for tonight's game, nice measuring stick game for the Flyers. Obviously there is much work that needs to be done. While it was a tough defensive game for Schenn, I was happy to see him throw his weight around.

Nice win for the Hawks tonight in a well-played game from both sides. Both goalies were great, and though Varlamov gave up a couple of goals, he really played extremely well. Made a handful of massive saves (the ones on Seabrook and Kruger come to mind).

Loads of fun up in Sunrise last night. Panthers are actually a lot better than they've been the last few years (strange seeing one-time Sabres defensive star Brian Campbell in that uniform; I'd forgotten that the 'Hawks cut him loose), but Buffalo is looking good. Still depressing to see such a beautiful arena essentially half-empty. I liked the Panthers before I even moved here, but they haven't been run well for ages. I'm not sure they're long for this world. Perhaps it's another Atlanta Thrashers become the Winnipeg Jets (I wouldn't oppose a new Quebec Nordiques).

As far as the game, wasn't hard to find Sabres fans in the upper deck, so I made a lot of friends pretty quickly. Miller played well to get his first shutout of the year, but he wasn't particularly challenged. Panthers' offense was damn anemic. Tomas Vanek's goal on the power play, though? That shit was mint. Loved that slap shot. Nice work by Leino too, actually, to set up The Captain's goal.

Yeah he's been playing so well in his first 5 starts. 2 goals against or less in each game. He has given his team a great chance to win every time he's out there.

That game last night really was fast-paced, exciting hockey, as is the usual between the Hawks and Avs. It was great to see Toews get going, he played outstanding, though the best player on the ice had to be Varlamov. Can't wait for round 2 on Saturday.

Ya that save he had on Kruger was pure larceny after Kane danced to the middle. Not sure I ever felt this confident in Niemi, who while always played solid had the tendency to let in a soft one every now and then, haven't seen many bad goals at all with Crawford over the past 2 seasons.

and Carcillo's pass to set up Toews on his goal was a beauty. Keep laughing at him, I'm really coming around to him real fast.

He sucks. He'll do something annoying. You'll see. I think I can remember the moments of greatness from Carcillo. I can count them on one hand and probably exclude my thumb...

And they aren't as good as they were last year so what will happen in January when they are on the outside looking in? I'm still very interested in what happens there. Does the NHL say if you don't have an owner by December they are gone cause we need to figure out schedule stuff with Detroit and Columbus? If you do that does that kill your attendance even more? Should be interesting.

The Hawks have given up one power play goal and scored two short handed goals. I'm fine with that.

I'm not totally sold on Carcillo yet, but he has done much more good than bad so far this year. Not going to be healthy scratched too often if he keeps playing this well on the 2nd line. He's already made 2 excellent plays to set up goals this year.

This is what this thread is about RJ, sticking up for your team. It's all in good natured. It's not like we're actually going to prevent someone from posting--unless it's Brohan or mdrums.

If he keeps up his pace, then yes. He will get serious HOF consideration some day. An eventual championship will all but lock it up.

Like has been said, Carcillo's biggest enemy has been himself. Tons of talent and a great work ethic when he applies it in the right area. Also, something I've noticed this season... he's got really good on-ice vision. Gets pucks to where a guy ought to be instead of where they currently are. Unexpected, but true.

Oh gosh. Welcome to the NHL thread. This is what we do. Extremely good-natured. We've made it a thread joke to bash on the Caps based solely on the merits of a certain attention-craving, hockey-ignorant poster who still graces us with his presence here and there.

My Nords hat is my pride and joy. Let me know if you find a good site for a Whale hat.

Two questions for you, my dear friend Ant:
1) Who is this "Angie" you speak of
2) Where can I get me one? ;)

I was surprised they gave up on him that quick. But Samuelsson is a proven goal-scorer in this league and has been vastly underrated for most of his career. He's also good on the PK and has SC experience. That can never hurt a team.

And man, I'll tell you what's doing it for the Avs... Pure work and tenacity. These guys are all over the place. Particularly their forechecking and physicality has improved leaps and bounds, and the best part is they're getting it from everyone. Even Gabby Landeskog had six hits tonight. The defense is still an achilles heel... I winced when our top guy (Johnson) committed the unpardonable sin for a d-man (clearing it up the middle) for the Frolik goal. But we're getting there.
