Also, got to watch the first two periods on the plane as it had DirecTV available for a fee. Just watched the end to Canada's game at a bar during my connection.

Pretty good stuff here!

Won't have anything after a 12pm start. That's a 9pm local start time alone. Odds of the gold medal game being 3am EST are pretty good.

Nice. US and Canada have had ok start times, if you live on the east coast. Poor Sarah in Cali.

I didn't watch the last two periods but he did look little shaky early in the first, but yeah you go with him. I think they made that choice from the start, especially once he started vs Russia. You don't change it now.

i don't know if it was him actually being shaky or if his style of play just makes me nervous.

he has a lot of lateral movement in the net

he was actually quite aggressive today, was on top of the crease often

i like that, but you can't give up fatty rebounds against the canadians

That aggressive style is the only way you can really play against the Canadians. As a goalie, he's got to come out and make himself look big. If he retreats back into his net, they will snipe him all night. Game plan is to come out and be aggressive, relying on your d-men to cover their guys in front. Luckily, USA has the caliber of d-men to do that. Guys like Orpik were added to the roster exactly for games like this one coming up.

Trying to refrain from nashing Orpik but I think he's USA's worst defenseman by a few tiers. The only guy I'd put behind him defensively is Shattenkirk...maybe.

agreed, he better gobble up the rebounds though

good d-men can only do it for so long against a team as talented as canada

I did not have him on my list for making the team.

At this point in his career, and with his skillset, he's more of a situational player. Would not be as strong against teams like Sweden, but is great when used as a 2nd or 3rd pair guy against a team like Canada.

Especially with guys like Getzlaf and Perry playing like they did today (crash crash crash), USA will really have to step up the physicality against our friends to the north, especially in front of the net.

Yep. Quick's job will be to be square on the shooter, allowing the puck to hit him in a place where rebounds won't bounce out. The D's job will be to be on either side of him, keeping an eye on guys trying to sneak around him.

Also, USA's centers will have to be especially good on the back check watching in front of the net. With how Doughty and Weber have been scoring, you better believe their game plan will be to get forwards in the slot clogging lanes and screening Quick, then getting the puck to the point for shots that can be tipped in. The defending center will really have to be prepared to be that 3rd d-man and get his nose dirty in front of the net. Bread and butter for a guy like Backes.

absolutely, and how about backes? he's having a hell of a tourney

team USA will have to give up the body on friday, they can't let those missles from canada's d-man at the point get through...other than that, get dirty in both zones and do some work boys, canada is beatable

Backes and McDonagh have far and away been my favorite USA-ers so far. :thumbsup Absolutely the perfect players for a team like this. Exactly who you want in a tournament like the Olympics.

Agreed. Underrated in his overall abilities. As I've said before, losing him in the Johnson trade hurt a lot more than losing Stewart.

EDIT: But I won't deny that guys like he and Fowler will be challenged physically by Canada more than they ever have so far in the tourney.

Assuming US is able to get the job done against our northern friends, I think at this point I would want to face Sweden instead of Finland. The Finns just work so damn hard and are so solid defensively in terms of positioning.

At least it is not the ACL. He should be able to still train this off season and be ready to start next season (I think)

Got the news while at work yesterday and the updates kept getting worse. Then I saw McKenzie's tweet and I feared the ACL and him be done til Xmas. At least I feel slightly better hearing this. Still blows.

He has been so healthy. I think he has only missed 5 games so far in career. Sucks it had to happen in the Olympics. Guess he won't be going in 2018.

Guess we won't be having that same run in March like last year.

More misery for us Islander fans. Hardcore fans like myself really deserve better. Ugh. Vanek and AMac should be traded soon and we'll keep the 1st rounder this year and Buffalo will get ours next year.

This sucks incredibly bad in so many ways... not the least of which because he's on my fantasy squad. Get ready for some trade requests, guys.

But yes, his injury will definitely be a reason to not have NHL-ers back at the Olympics. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out. More importantly, it sucks for Isles to lose him. They've had their ups and downs this year, but it's been great to see him emerge as a real bona fide leader in the NHL (both in stats and in the locker room), especially at such a young age.

All that being said, I'm not too worried. The kid's a hawkey player. Expect him to be back on the ice by the end of March.

How many of the Canadian women's team players do you think Crosby has slammed?

That's a huge goal. If US can make it 2-0, that might be enough.

Fixed your spelling. ;)

Yeah, you have to wonder how she can be Phil's sister with the disparity in looks.

Gotta cash on this 5-3. Don't know why the Canadians didn't give up the puck earlier, they wasted a good 15 seconds.

:thumbsup I was thinking the same thing, but from the USA side of things. Let the Canadians hold on to the puck as long as possible, lessening the time they will have to spend 5 on 3.

Canadians are playing well. This is going to be a 2-1 game for someone.

It's still only a two goal differential, and Canada is more than capable of getting two quick goals. It's not over yet. And I'm still worried about the men tomorrow. I think us over canada but it'll be a squeaker.

USA is too strong. I don't think Canada get can 2 on them tonight. Stranger things have happened, but it's not trending well for us.

Tomorrow..oh baby, tomorrow! So excited....and nervous. Excited and nervous.
