Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

Hey fellas! I always feel slightly sad when I miss all the weekend action here in the ol' thread. Backreading was enjoyable though. I still love all the folks that get all hot and bothered by our trash talk :lol

On the Torres hit: The high number of games is definitely a combination of Torres's priors as well as Shanahan wanting to make a statement. Shanahan really couldn't have asked for a better situation (no offense, Hossa), with a scumbag like Torres doing something that egregious right when he (Shanny) was under the most fire.

To me, though, the question remains: Say it was a superstar rather than Torres... would the suspension have been as long? Still skeptical there.

The other thing that crossed my mind is who will be out of a job next season. I think Todd McLellan has a high possibility of going, as does Quennenville if the Hawks are eliminated. Vigneault as well? Two others could potentially be Bylsma and Babcock. Babcock is one of my favorite coaches ever, and I have a feeling Holland knows what a gem he has there... but is it time for a change? Methinks with the changes on the roster this coming season they will keep Babs around to see what he can do.

Finally, I disagree with everyone else getting all scared of how future rounds could play out. Yeah, a PHX/NAS series won't get the ratings that CHI/DET would, but c'mon, hockey is hockey. It's great for these small market teams to get some exposure and can only help their cause. Nashville, for example, has a fantastic fan base with a lot of potential to grow. By all accounts, they are big-market caliber fans cheering for a small-market team. Opponents have commented on the past at how surprisingly loud it is in Nashville. Personally, to me, Chicago hasn't been all that fun to watch this year... certainly not more fun than Nashville IMO.

Perhaps it's just because I am completely unbiased due to the crappy play of my own team:lol but I'm just looking forward to more hockey.

Just been hearing his name for a while and nothing has really come through yet. It's been months and still nothing so I think he's their last ditch effort. The fact that he's still after at least 2 months if not more trying to secure enough financing worries me if I'm Glendale or a Coyotes fan.

But read the tweets by the reporter I posted. The Glendale City Council Meeting going on right now doesn't sound promising for them staying put.

Well on Babcock I don't think he's going anywhere. Holland knows this team was rolling before all their injuries and had those not happened things would have been different. Wings probably would have won the division. The thing is who would be better? If this team would have been healthy all year and still fell to the "bottom 4" of the playoffs teams they might look at letting him go. With the money they have to spend they'll improve this year. McLellan for example is what Babcock would have to do. That team had two chances to go to the finals and failed and then had to have a late surge just to get in. Not his fault entirely since two big forwards were traded away for Burns and Havlat but still. AV is gone for sure imo. Coach Q? Depends on what happens the next two games (if there are two games)

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

Well said, Fonzz. And you have the best viewpoint for this right, especially on the last part with markets, ratings, etc. The more teams that get exposed as being good, the better. I'm sure casual fans are sick of hearing only about Philly, NYR, Boston, Washington, Pittsburgh, Vancouver, Detroit, Chicago and any I missed. Let St. Louis, Nashville and Phoenix get some love and some of the spot light. This sport is growing with only one direction to go in: up.

Yeah, like I said he's a possibility but I think he stays. Top 250 coach for sure. He's too good to not give another shot or two, especially with the potential roster changes next season. He's one of the only things I love about the Red Wings.

:thumbsup on the Selke finalists. I think it definitely goes to Bergeron, who has been a killer all-around force this year. But still, three excellent candidates.

Would've loved to see Ryan O'Reilly get some love. Spent some time at the top of the takeaways category (NHL overall, not just team) and continues to be a great shutdown player while improving leaps and bounds offensively.

Interesting article about the status of Doug Wilson and Todd McLellan's jobs. Long story short: Columnist thinks they're both safe. I hope he's wrong.

http://www.mercurynews.com/mark-purdy/ci_20456774

Most interesting is that apparently the main reason why Wilson's job is safe is that no one knows who would actually fire him. We have no CEO or team president, we have 6 VPs (Wilson is one of them), each of whom reports to "ownership", which is a consortium, and no one in said consortium is talking...

If that makes you feel better than ok. But where it really matters on the ice (not just in your head) I'll take losing to a well built team over losing to a team that hasn't won a series in 25 years, couldn't make it in Winnipeg, moved to Phoenix, went bankrupt, hasn't had an owner in 3 years and could be in Quebec City next year playing in a 60 year old arena. lol

Why was Matty growing one at all? I mean an Avs fan hasn't grown a beard since 2002 right? Right? Figured I'd keep it going for a while. Plus would have been weird to have one and then shave it all of a sudden. It's just now starting to look better. It'll be gone before the end of the playoffs though. Good for him.

I was thinking as I watched the opening seconds of Game 6, this is what a leader does. Not so much what he says, but the way he goes out and plays. That was a leader-like first minute of a game, and a reason I legitimately like OMGCG even beyond our hero-worship of him in this thread.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if he got the C after Pronger officially throws in the towel.

In the upcoming summer golf league?

Eh, I don't know.

But I'm glad you have Crosby and Malkin ranked in front of him.

I put him ahead of Neal and Letang. Give me some credit.

He has really grown (at least in public and with the media) this past series. Right after Game 3 you could tell he wanted the series to end. His frustration in Game 5 proved it to me, and him going to Lavy saying he wanted the first shift--coupled with his comment to Briere and Talbot "Watch this"--says it all.

The guy is a gamer, and a pretty good hockey player.

Bonzo's misspelling of the great name may call for some supplemental discipline. The play is currently under review and a decision will be announced by tomorrow.

This might call for an in-person hearing.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

I'm Chris Loughman, the NHL 2011/2012 thread starter and President of thread safety.

Monday afternoon in the NHL 2011/2012 thread, an incident occurred between bonzo48280 (a.k.a. Mike) and the spelling of THE Jonathan Toews's name.

At 4:18PM CST, Mike quoted fonzz41 (Matt) and delivered an illegal correction to the head of Matt's spelling of THE #19's name. For some odd and clearly idiotic reason, Mike believed that there was an extra "h" in the spelling of Jonathan's first name, when clearly, there is not.

This is a violation of the Jonathan Toews rule, which states:

No shame shall be brought upon THE Jonathan Toews (a.k.a. 19 19 19 19 19 19 19 19 19 19 19 19) in any way, shape or form.

Mike is not a repeat offender, but it is important to note that he is a Chicago Blackhawks fan. For this fact, the Department of Thread Safety has decided to suspend bonzo48280 for 3.5 hours (or until puckdrop for the Blackhawks game) and going forward, he will be considered a repeat offender.

bonzo48280 04-23-2012 05:36 PM

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

This is incorrect. I was stating that it was misspelled because there was an extra H. I do believe Fonz to be the misspeller here.

bonzo48280 04-23-2012 05:38 PM

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

The onus was clearly on Fonz41 to make sure he was hitting the correct buttons on his keyboard.

Upon further review, Bonzo is correct in his assertion that I (Fonzz41) misspelled the great name of Jonathan Toews. The onus is indeed on me to correctly spell the name of a player who wears the honored #19.

The Ants Department of Player Safety rescinds the suspension upon Bonzo and hereby suspends fonzz41 for the space of 3.5 hours. Furthermore, he may not mention the Great Name nor his Number for the space of 24 hours.

What a crazy turn of events. We need to take the Department more seriously before handing out these suspensions. Shanahan'ed that one.
