Guests - the best live versions of songs don’t feature guests, except...

So many threads rate the quality of live performances — and appear to discount the presence of a guest. Probably right on most counts. But is there a favorite live performance with a guest that breaks the rule for you?

That Girl Is You with Preservation Hall Jazz Band at the Gorge was a certified electric factory...chills just thinking about it.

Joe Lawlor on Rhyme and Reason...love the back and forth with Tim.

Brandi Carlile on Spoon at Deer Creek in 2013 was pretty special as well.

That Lover Lay Down with Branford Marsalis is a version I constantly go back to. Not the best, but top 5 for me

Was there for Brandi in Noblesville...and that was great.

Last show I attended was Dave and Tim on the beach in Mexico....just before the world shut down in 2020. Dave and Tim performed Angel From Montgomery with Amos Lee. One of my favorite versions.

Off the top of my head....

Cry Freedom with Stanley Jordan (specifically his outro jam) is some of the best music I’ve ever heard

Eh Hee with black thought and the roots is dope too

Cornbread Dave and Tim with Hamilton DeHolanda

Spoon with Brandi at Deer Creek 2013 will always give me goosebumps. It was my first and only Spoon and was so, so awesome.

Within Dave And Tim, apart from the amazing performances with Hamilton De Holanda, I love the recent show at Riviera Maya, Cancun, 02.15.2020, where they play with I Am With Her (Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz e Aoife O'Donovan) two beautiful versions of “The Maker” and “Ants Marching”

I have many others to post:
This is What Would You Say with Maceo Parker, in December ‘98, one of the final dates of celebrated fall’98 tour. What a great saxophonist (if I am not wrong, he played with James Brown for some time)

This is an extremely famous one, I am surprised nobody mentioned it as a first choice: DMB and John Mayer on 09.06.2007 (who said that 2007 was a bad year), at Tech Lane Stadium, Blacksburg (benefit concert for victims of Virginia Tech shooting).
It is not only John Mayer (who is great), it is the whole song that is played amazingly, with a tremendous Carter and such a smooth and seamless interaction between Mayer and the band. Just great.

While I love that version (and that whole show for personal reasons), it's honestly not even the best version of #41 with John Mayer. Check out the one from Hollywood Bowl later in 2007 if you haven't heard it!

Shocked nobody has said LIOG with Trey: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7jpd4dSyls

Also, pretty much any version of WWYS with Popper.

They could play Eh Hee every show twice if it came with a Black Thought freestyle.

Captain w/ Whitfield @MSG 2018 was excellent.

Tripping bullies w/ Warren during that same 2018 stop was a great new twist on the tune.
