As for big Buf - yeah, agreed. Salary cap sucks.

Anisimov was the big win in that trade. We had Marko Dano, but then traded him for Ladd last year...so it really ended up being Saad for Anisimov and a 4th round pick.

glad it's only January and the Pens still have a decent record, but i'm starting to get slightly concerned about their metro play

2 blowouts against the Caps and 1 blowout against CBJ

now, as defending champs, they are getting everyone's A game/best shot night in and night out, but it's time to start beating good teams methinks

And Delbarton is my local prep-school. I knew many people who attended Delbarton.

The Delbarton vs. Seton Hall games at Mennen Arena are always crazy and sell out. Many of the New Jersey Devils attend the game every year.

Edit: I should also note that I have had the displeasure of playing Delbarton when I was in high school. It felt to us like we were playing a professional team...

Awesome man!

I worked as a Skate Guard and EMT there for almost 10 years while in high school and College!

It is a nice 3 rink facility with rink one holding a pretty solid crowd for games.

Tyson Barrie is everything that is wrong with the NHL.

But seriously, if he's not getting you points he won't get you anything else (blocks, hits, etc). He plays on the worst team in the league, a team that has troubles scoring more than 1 goal a game. I think he's a -21 right now. If there's someone better out there for you to grab...

I'll be keeping him for now. We'll see.

So my Wings got a total of 6 points out of a possible 14 points on the 7 game road trip. They aren't done since the Atlantic blows but they sure didn't help themselves.

It's a thing of I can get someone who is doing about the same or keep him. I'm still evaluating. My D sucks, kinda like the Wings D, so it's the cliche of 6 of one or half dozen of another. Will dropping him for another make me any better or the same?

Yeah, D is tricky in fantasy. Only a handful are really going to pull their own weight points-wise, so I start to look at other contributions they can make to my stats, specifically blocks, hits, and +\-. I mean, I'm certainly not dressing Ian Cole for his PP prowess! :lol

Forgive me if you have posted about this in the past and I missed it...but...what happened in Colorado?

I remember a few years ago they seemed to be a young(er) team on the rise. It looked like they were building to be a legit contender soon. Next thing I know they don't even resemble an NHL team. So what went wrong there?

I have talked about it in bits and pieces, but enough people have asked that it probably deserves a more thorough response. I'm on vacation right now, but will type something up when I get back.

In short: they failed at promoting a winning culture.

That rink is actually kind of awesome. Nothing like that up here in Philly area that I know of. All just stand alone rinks.

Wish I had time to play more and get better. Family obligations and all prevent that!

I'm still utility and play everywhere. Depends on what guys show up that night. I'm usually a winger though. Mainly right side.

Bring your family to the rink! Field trip!

It's just bizarre walking through there. There's no actual separation of the rink and the mall, it's literally just in the middle there. So you're in full gear walking through a bunch of people with DSW and Macy's bags as your going from the locker room to the ice :lol It's really strange and kind of awkward, but it's fun when you're playing, because you actually have people watching.

I post here every once and a while:

https://www.reddit.com/r/hockeyplayers/

And it's a great place to learn and hear other stories. Lots of newbies there telling their success stories and how thankful they are to have started skating. Jeremy from howtohockey.com posts there all the time, and he has some really, really great videos.

I know it's a scary hurtle to jump, but I promise the payoff is worth it. If you love hockey, I can't recommend it enough.

We outshot them like a bazillion to 11 or something, and still lost 2-0...ugh), but he's still in our league. We're off this week, but supposedly he has one of our upcoming games. Just bite the bullet and find a league for older people. Hell I am going to be 40 in a few months and I still play around 20 minutes a game on D and can still drag my old ass up to the blue line to take some shots here and there - my offense is not that great so our D has to give them rebounds! :lol

Agreed. Hawks are playing like shit and rightfully getting their asses kicked but that call was awful. When a defenseman pushes someone into their own goalie that is not interference, it is just a dumb ass play by the D man and Holtby sold it perfectly by acting like the stick got knocked out of his hand rather than it just being left on the ice after the puck went in.

The no goal call was really bad. It feels like that was especially deflating for the Hawks. That was the only part of the game where the Hawks seemed to have some real momentum and the no goal sucked the life out of them.

I was only listening to the call on the radio but Walton made it seem like it would get called back.

Beagle continues to be the Hawks killer. Love him and that 4th line right now

May or may have not been deflating for the Hawks, but the caps won the game in the 1st period

Yeah, it was just one of those that you should probably leave the call on the ice as-is. Not like it mattered in the long run. Just a bad game from Chicago. Oh well.

Big one on Sunday against Minny.

Yea, probably would not have made a difference in the outcome but it could have shifted momentum going into the third. Just an awful call.

I am not concerned, it was a regular season game - Caps are always good at them but crumble when it counts! :p

Agreed on a big game Sunday!

I kind of agree, however I've seen 3 goal leads disappear before, and the Hawks had some legit momentum happening when that goal was disallowed. If that goal counts and the Hawks get another right after, well then it would've mattered. But the play was disallowed and it seemed like it sunk the Hawks.

Must be their turn and the Caps to go on point/winning streaks in the Eastern Conference :lol

Flyers/Pens alumni game tonight is filled with key players from both franchises. The Flyers are loaded with players who won the Cup or contended for many while the Pens have players from all the crappy teams that led to them tanking for Crosby and Malkin :)

Good thing just about all the current Pens are players who won the Cup :) And Trottier and Phil Borque showed up! :lol

And that bum Jagr is playing in an actual NHL game with the Panthers. (I know you know that. I still am in awe of the fact he's still playing.)

So, Cody McLeod gets traded to Nashville yesterday. Avs have a home game today where they play, you guessed it, Nashville. So Cody basically drives to the rink like he's done every home game for the past 12 seasons, only this time he goes to the other dressing room.

He ends up scoring on the game, as well as fighting Jarome Iginla. Crazy.

McLeod was one of the most popular guys in the room, to hear everyone tell it. Even Sakic said he kept McLeod involved in the whole trade process, treating it as if he had an NTC and making sure he went to a contender. The guy's only 32, but you have to think his days in today's NHL are numbered. But yeah, he was beloved by teammates and fans alike.

I think (obviously I don't know for sure) that it could've been one of those situations where he said, "Hey Iggy, I've gotta show my new team who I am. Will you go with me?" And Iggy, having been around the block and knowing what's up, obliged. They chat for quite a bit as they are lined up for the faceoff before they actually fight, so I wouldn't be surprised if there was some of that going on.

I remember a few years ago they seemed to be a young(er) team on the rise. It looked like they were building to be a legit contender soon. Next thing I know they don't even resemble an NHL team. So what went wrong there?

Finally getting around to this, sorry.

It's a puzzling question, Greg. The moves Sakic has made since taking over have been, in theory, good. A couple big time duds, like trading for Briere and Boedkker, signing oldies like Beauchemin, Brad Stuart and Jarome Iginla for the type of term/dollars he did, not moving Stastny before he went to UFA, etc. Some are already calling trades mistakes before they have time to really come to fruition. For example, the O'Reilly trade. The Avs were not going to win that one with the money/term he wanted. The key piece they get back is Zadorov, who hasn't looked great leading up to this season but has actually looked A LOT better. He'll be fine in a season or two. A little patience is what Joe has preached, and he's right... in some aspects.

But these are things that happen to every team, and many survive them. Especially with the core they have. There's not a lot wrong when you look at a core of Landeskog, MacKinnon, Duchene, Erik Johnson, and Semyon Varlamov, right? And when you've actually drafted pretty well (Rantanen, Jost, Pickard) and signed/acquired what on paper appears to be a good bottom 6, there should be nothing but hope, right?

Yet, they're the worst team in the league.

What I think it comes down to is a lack of building a winning mentality from the ground up. There didn't seem to be this commitment to developing the discipline and culture needed to compete for championships. That, I think, starts with the GM and coach. Now, I LOVE Joe Sakic. As a player, he was everything you could ever want. But his leadership was always the quiet, by-example style. Nevertheless, he established that winning culture as a player. And for whatever reason, that hasn't seemed to translate well to the GM position. And when the core has been coddled along for this long by him and coaches like Roy (who was supposed to be that culture guy), it isn't being engrained into their psyche either. It's like they don't even know what they don't know.

Look at what Q and Bowman has done in Chicago, What Tortorella is doing in Columbus, what Mike Effing Babcock has done for every team he's coached. We need that in Colorado, or even having a collection of the very best players ever won't mean crap.

Shakeups need to occur in the lineup. I think one or a combination of Duchene, Landy, and Barrie get moved. But that won't be enough. Culture needs to be built.

I love Landeskog so much. Think Peter Forsberg, but better ankles. I would especially like to see the levels he could get to under the guiding hand of some of the guys I mentioned above.

Cons: He bears some personal responsibility for this certainly, but I think he's fallen victim to the (lack of) culture in Colorado. He works exceptionally hard, but that hard work goes to naught if there's nothing you're working towards, you know? Also, gets hot-headed at times. Never flies COMPLETELY off the handle, but has been known to go cheap at times.

However....

Pros: Power skater. Not the fastest, but moves hard and can still keep up. Great nose for the net, gets to the right spots in the offensive zone. Mostly a scorer skillset, but capable passer with great vision and a slick saucer pass. Great at using his body to protect the puck and is difficult to move off it. Loves to backcheck. Above-average hitter for his skill level - will punish you if your head is down or if you go into the corners with him. Never takes a shift off. Great teammate who will stick up for anyone on the roster in a heartbeat. Leader. If you're only looking at the stat sheet and not watching him in-game, you're missing so much of what he does.

EDIT: Just thinking about the things he could do playing with Patrick Kane gives me a halfsie.

Some reports have said teams are balking at Sakic's asking price for Landeskog. If so, they are not looking at what he still COULD be. I would love to see him stay in Colorado, under a different coach and with some better direction.

Agreed. Would have shifted the momentum in the game going to the third dowm 3-1 or 3-2 and who knows how that would have played out.

So mostly a culture in the locker room issue. I can see that. I remember in the late 90's and early 2000's the Rangers seemed to have enough pieces in place to be competitive, but instead continuously missed the playoffs. A lot of people felt the loss of Messier to the Canucks and Graves to the Sharks killed the leadership in the room.

I think you are correct in saying that a great coach could really make a difference there. It also sounds like they could rebound quickly next year with the right moves.

I personally love the Denver/Boulder area of Colorado and always like it when their teams are good. So it sucks to see the Ave's so far down as they are.

Tough weekend. Back-to-back losses don't have me worried about the overall quality of the team, but the do have me worried with how competitive the MET is. There is really not a lot of room for error in this division. I get they just came off of their off week (even though they have still played the most games in the division), but they will need to be even better if they want to finish any higher than 1WC.

It's truly remarkable how critical losing one game in the metro seems to be right now. Zero room for error, you're exactly right.

I think my Caps might be peaking a touch early. I think this group needs some adversity heading into the playoffs and winning the division (which could absolutely happen or very easily could not) isn't really adversity.

Yeah I'm intrigued for today's game. The Caps are riding so high right now, and the Flyers have obviously struggled lately. Feels like a trap game maybe. We also have Pittsburgh again tomorrow, so even though it's the Flyers on national TV I still feel like they could overlook this game a little bit. The Flyers are gonna wanna win, I expect a really strong game from them. It's been a few weeks since they won a road game yes? No better time for them to have a great game than today.

Wings are almost at the bottom of the East but within 6 of a playoff spot. Just lose boys. Get the picks and see what happens. The one bad thing about being out of the playoffs at the deadline is that they'll probably trade Vanek and he's been great. Although, he could very well be gone through UFA this summer anyways. If only this team could play better he'd have been a great addition.

yeah been a fun year. McDavid Maroon Draisaitl is a solid line.
Imagine if Nugent-Hopkins and Eberle were scoring too, this team would be incredible.
Maroon has been a pleasant surprise to me and is rapidly becoming a fan favourite in Edmonton between his hard work, scoring and interactions with his son etc.

Everyone watching knows Ovie takes that shot 99% of the time, so for him to do that was simply marvelous to watch. Kudos to Niskanen for getting his stick on it... he probably expected 8 to take that shot as much as we all did and was just hoping for a rebound.

Add to that Backstrom's saucer pass over the sticks of two d-men, and you have one of the prettiest goal sequences of the season.
