glad it's only January and the Pens still have a decent record, but i'm starting to get slightly concerned about their metro play
2 blowouts against the Caps and 1 blowout against CBJ now, as defending champs, they are getting everyone's A game/best shot night in and night out, but it's time to start beating good teams methinks |

It's just bizarre walking through there. There's no actual separation of the rink and the mall, it's literally just in the middle there. So you're in full gear walking through a bunch of people with DSW and Macy's bags as your going from the locker room to the ice :lol It's really strange and kind of awkward, but it's fun when you're playing, because you actually have people watching. The no goal call was really bad. It feels like that was especially deflating for the Hawks. That was the only part of the game where the Hawks seemed to have some real momentum and the no goal sucked the life out of them.

So, Cody McLeod gets traded to Nashville yesterday. Avs have a home game today where they play, you guessed it, Nashville. So Cody basically drives to the rink like he's done every home game for the past 12 seasons, only this time he goes to the other dressing room.
He ends up scoring on the game, as well as fighting Jarome Iginla. Crazy. |

They chat for quite a bit as they are lined up for the faceoff before they actually fight, so I wouldn't be surprised if there was some of that going on. #garageleague |
Re: The NHL Thread (lolcaps)

It's a puzzling question, Greg. The moves Sakic has made since taking over have been, in theory, good. A couple big time duds, like trading for Briere and Boedkker, signing oldies like Beauchemin, Brad Stuart and Jarome Iginla for the type of term/dollars he did, not moving Stastny before he went to UFA, etc. Some are already calling trades mistakes before they have time to really come to fruition. For example, the O'Reilly trade. The Avs were not going to win that one with the money/term he wanted. The key piece they get back is Zadorov, who hasn't looked great leading up to this season but has actually looked A LOT better. He'll be fine in a season or two. A little patience is what Joe has preached, and he's right... in some aspects. But these are things that happen to every team, and many survive them. Especially with the core they have. There's not a lot wrong when you look at a core of Landeskog, MacKinnon, Duchene, Erik Johnson, and Semyon Varlamov, right? And when you've actually drafted pretty well (Rantanen, Jost, Pickard) and signed/acquired what on paper appears to be a good bottom 6, there should be nothing but hope, right? Yet, they're the worst team in the league. What I think it comes down to is a lack of building a winning mentality from the ground up. There didn't seem to be this commitment to developing the discipline and culture needed to compete for championships. That, I think, starts with the GM and coach. Now, I LOVE Joe Sakic. As a player, he was everything you could ever want. But his leadership was always the quiet, by-example style. Nevertheless, he established that winning culture as a player. And for whatever reason, that hasn't seemed to translate well to the GM position. And when the core has been coddled along for this long by him and coaches like Roy (who was supposed to be that culture guy), it isn't being engrained into their psyche either. It's like they don't even know what they don't know. Look at what Q and Bowman has done in Chicago, What Tortorella is doing in Columbus, what Mike Effing Babcock has done for every team he's coached. We need that in Colorado, or even having a collection of the very best players ever won't mean crap. Shakeups need to occur in the lineup. I think one or a combination of Duchene, Landy, and Barrie get moved. But that won't be enough. Culture needs to be built. Quote:
Cons: He bears some personal responsibility for this certainly, but I think he's fallen victim to the (lack of) culture in Colorado. He works exceptionally hard, but that hard work goes to naught if there's nothing you're working towards, you know? Also, gets hot-headed at times. Never flies COMPLETELY off the handle, but has been known to go cheap at times. However.... Pros: Power skater. Not the fastest, but moves hard and can still keep up. Great nose for the net, gets to the right spots in the offensive zone. Mostly a scorer skillset, but capable passer with great vision and a slick saucer pass. Great at using his body to protect the puck and is difficult to move off it. Loves to backcheck. Above-average hitter for his skill level - will punish you if your head is down or if you go into the corners with him. Never takes a shift off. Great teammate who will stick up for anyone on the roster in a heartbeat. Leader. If you're only looking at the stat sheet and not watching him in-game, you're missing so much of what he does. EDIT: Just thinking about the things he could do playing with Patrick Kane gives me a halfsie. Some reports have said teams are balking at Sakic's asking price for Landeskog. If so, they are not looking at what he still COULD be. I would love to see him stay in Colorado, under a different coach and with some better direction. |

I think you are correct in saying that a great coach could really make a difference there. It also sounds like they could rebound quickly next year with the right moves. I personally love the Denver/Boulder area of Colorado and always like it when their teams are good. So it sucks to see the Ave's so far down as they are. ___________________________________ Moving on to the Rangers: Tough weekend. Back-to-back losses don't have me worried about the overall quality of the team, but the do have me worried with how competitive the MET is. There is really not a lot of room for error in this division. I get they just came off of their off week (even though they have still played the most games in the division), but they will need to be even better if they want to finish any higher than 1WC. |
Re: The NHL Thread (lolcaps)
Quote:
I think my Caps might be peaking a touch early. I think this group needs some adversity heading into the playoffs and winning the division (which could absolutely happen or very easily could not) isn't really adversity. |
Re: The NHL Thread (lolcaps)
I hope the Caps start to lose, starting today would be good.
|
Re: The NHL Thread (lolcaps)
Yeah I'm intrigued for today's game. The Caps are riding so high right now, and the Flyers have obviously struggled lately. Feels like a trap game maybe. We also have Pittsburgh again tomorrow, so even though it's the Flyers on national TV I still feel like they could overlook this game a little bit. The Flyers are gonna wanna win, I expect a really strong game from them. It's been a few weeks since they won a road game yes? No better time for them to have a great game than today.
|
Re: The NHL Thread (lolcaps)
Wings are almost at the bottom of the East but within 6 of a playoff spot. Just lose boys. Get the picks and see what happens. The one bad thing about being out of the playoffs at the deadline is that they'll probably trade Vanek and he's been great. Although, he could very well be gone through UFA this summer anyways. If only this team could play better he'd have been a great addition.
