That was basically the Stanley Cup Finals all over. Even when the Rangers were up 3-1 I said to my parents "Wow, I hope the Rangers just get a point out of this." The Rangers are still not really able to handle the top of the west.

Also, sorry to our local Kings fan (and sort of Rangers fan), but I really despise the Kings more than I ever thought possible. Kings are 100% my most hated team in the NHL now. I even took pleasure in the Devils beating them last week. I would rather see the Flyers win the cup at this point.

Hence why Subban has won the Norris. Again, it's Panarin's Calder this year

No offense to the other guys like Larkin, etc., but Panarin is the clear winner.

Panarin will win, I have very little doubt. And that's fine. His play merits the recognition.

But in the end, I like talking more about who I would LIKE to see win rather than who WILL win. I know, how selfish, right? But in many cases it's hard to determine who should win a particular award. I mean, with the Norris, do you go for the point getters (Karlsson), or the staunch defenders (Suter)? So for me, I just like to identify whose game I like the most, and then give them accolades for it. And you know me and my tastes, so it should be no surprise I like Larkin's game more than Panarin's. Not a knock on Panarin, just preference. To me, that's a more fun conversation than predicting who actually will win what is in all actuality, a pretty meaningless award.

I wouldn't say it is selfish at all, it is no different than a healthy debate/discussion about who will win an MVP award, a Conn Smyth, a golden glove, a golden ball (world Cup) or any other personal award in sports where stats don't figure in quite as much as say a batting average champion, a passing leader, a rushing leader or who tallies the most points in a given season. If anything we are lucky to be having this discussion because these guys have added so much talent to the NHL - which frankly does not get the recognition of the NBA, NFL or MLB. It is great for the league to have all these new guys add their skill to the NHL. That said, I think McDavid would be the runaway winner if he did not suffer an injury.

I think the norris debate will be good too!

The thing that might keep Panarin from it, is that the writers will look at who he plays for. "The Hawks make anyone look good" will be the argument. No matter how unfair that might be, we know it happens. It's like coach of the year. The Presidents Trophy winner rarely gets it. It's usually the coach of a team who sucked last year and is good this year or just a team that was expected to be worse than they actually were this year.

Problem is that the writers largely knows squat about hockey and are often biased against certain teams. You could make the same argument about guys who make their debut on the Caps, the Rangers, the Kings, the Ducks, etc, etc - doesn't mean their misgivings have any weight. These are the same type pf idiots who gave an MVP award to Joe Dimaggio in 1941 instead of Ted Williams who hit .406 or the morons who think Ripken's streak is more impressive than Gehrig's or the mental midgets who awarded a golden glove to Rafael Palmeiro over Tino Martinez - somehow overlooking the fact that Palmiero only played 28 games in the field. In the NFL they have the same nitwhits who constantly claim Tom Brady gets more credit than he deserves. The writers are pathetic, better to let the league or the players cast the votes IMO.

Kronwall could be back Saturday and Howard might start. Both are surprising. Wasn't expecting Kronner back so soon and assumed Mrazek would be healthy (was ill last night) for tomorrow. Howie has played well recently and looked calm and collected last night. The best he's looked since early in the season. If he leads them down the stretch, whether they make it into the playoffs or not, it'll be interesting to see what happens in goal. I still think they keep Mrazek over him. Youth will win out but Howie playing well could help trade value so a positive there too.

Yes, market definitely does play a part in it, either in favor of the player or against him.

For example, I'd love to see what the Calder talk would be like if Max Domi played for the Hawks, Rangers, etc. instead of the Coyotes.

I don't really think the market a player plays in factors in all that much. I mean, the last 5 winners have come from Colorado, Florida and Carolina. Not exactly huge market teams. Colorado, kinda I guess.

I would say it is the team success that drives the bias more than the market.

Yeah. On my biased side I look at 2003. Zetterberg scored 22 goals and 44 points for the 2nd best team in the West while Barret Jackman scored a total of 19 points and a +23 for the 5th seeded Blues and Jackman won the Calder. I think people said "Well look at the team Zetterberg played with." Which I can turn that around and say he was able to get ice time and score those goals with all the super stars that team had.

Completely agree, that was a joke of a vote, heck Zetterberg only placed third behind Jackman and Nash. Jackman only tallied 19 points while Nash had 39 and Zetterberg had 44. It is like these voters are either drunk or bought off.

On the plus side it is great for the game to have a crop of rookies like we have this year. Reminds me of 2007 when you had Kane, Backstrom, Cogliano, Toews, Staal, Lucic, Dubinsky and Price all making immediate impacts

3rd in rookie scoring with 45 points on a team like the Coyotes should make him at least part of the conversation.

The ice time stat... eh. It's a few seconds behind Larkin and still at 16 minutes a game. On a Dave Tippett-coached team that loves to roll lines fairly evenly, that's about right. And that should make his point totals all the more impressive.

I wouldn't put him in my top 3 rookies this season, but he's right up there. The point I was making is that I think playing for a team like the Coyotes has kept him out of a spotlight he'd probably be more in if he played for a larger market team (and was playing at an equal level).

Yeah, appreciate that one knocking off Nashville. My concern for Washington is they seemingly always allow the first goal and have to come back. Hopefully Calgary can hold on too and do me another favor.

So that is what getting 2 points feels like, I had almost forgotten! Very classy homecoming for Ladd between the video celebration of his time up there and then again the fans were on their feet cheering when he scored.

Good day all around so far from my perspective, only thing I am not happy about is finding out that Seguin is going to miss the rest of the season with a partially torn achilles tendon.

Nah, it is not that I am concerned about them catching the Hawks - I think it is mathematically impossible. That said I would rather not face them in a first round series. Not that I think they will make much noise in the playoffs if they get in but they may be one of those trap teams (like the Wild or Preds) that could turn it on for one series and knock off a legit contender.

Yeah, if any lower seeded team could give the Hawks trouble, it may just be the Avs. Best case scenario would be for the Avs to stay in 8th and the Stars in first. I would much rather face the Stars than the Hawks or Kings.

Yeah, the Avs are a pesty team. The are not all that great but could conceivably give a good team trouble, maybe drag out a series to 6 or 7 games or even win - though they don't have the talent to make any sort of deep run IMO.

Hell, I would rather face Dallas in the first round, their defense is not very solid at all, their goaltending is hit or miss on any given night and lastly you will be facing a team who will just be getting Seguin back from injury so you really cannot predict how effective he will be when he comes back.

....what???

We put in Brodie Sutter, who has played less than 10 NHL games, to take a shot in the shootout. He lost the puck without shooting barely past the blue line.

I don't understand. Skinner has not gotten a chance to shoot at all in any shootout I've seen. That's just wrong. Let your best players win the game. Quit putting minor leaguers and Chris flippin' Terry on when it matters most. Argh.

Said the same thing about th Wings against the Flyers last week. It was the definition of a must win and they were outshot 23-3 in the first. If they show up before the 2nd they probably win and are up 7 instead of 3.

Avs have loads of talent, they just haven't been able to translate that into consistently high-level play. There's a big difference between a talented team and a good team. The Avs are the former, with a growing number of glimpses into the latter.

I love it. I want a Caps/Pens playoff series so bad.

5 minute and a game. Gotta imagine that hit gets at least 2 games, maybe 3.

Assume this is about Weber and not Ovie, yes? Agreed. Probably 2 since there was no injury.

Ovie's hit was borderline though. I know not much deal was made of it, which kinda surprises me

Yeah, Weber. That was really, really dumb.

Nope. I mean, at least I didn't miss much, but would have liked to actually watch the start of the game.

No one ever accused them of competence.

And with two convincing wins, the Pens are second in the Metro! Woo! This team has shades of the 2009 team. Just hope Malkin gets healthy in time.

Fuck the Wild with a cactus.

God, I hate that goaltender rule. What's he supposed to do there? How could he possibly avoid the goalie?

Re: The NHL Thread

God I hate losing to the Wild, especially in the shootout. Decent enough game, though.

Come on, Hawks. You had one job to do!

Hawks look lost lately. Lucky to get a point.

Re: The NHL Thread

I hope to god Weber gets 3 games and played his last game as a Cap. Him and Schmidt looked beyond lost today.

Entire team didn't show up at all for that game. But like Barbs said I would love to play the Isles, Wings or Flyers in first round. Let Rags and Pens beat each other up in the 1st

Caps have given up the first goal in 15 of their last 18 games.

Not worried right now. Team still hasn't lost 3 in a row or 3 games over 5 games all year.

Next 2 against Senators and Devils are just what the doctored ordered

big game tonight. Isles have had 2 home games in the past month. Our offense needs to get going.

Go Isles!

I too hope Mike Weber has played his last game as a Capital. That experiment hasn't worked at all.

That hit was foolish, no doubt.

It pains me to no end to say this, but I actually want the Flyers to win tonight. :ugh

I need the Flyers to lost at least one of the next two games and since tomorrow is the Jackets, I'd assume tonight is more likely so that's why it's go Isles for me.

Totally understandable. I'm rooting for the Wings to get in because it'd be cool to see their playoff streak continue.

But the Isles have two games in hand on the Pens so they need to lose at least one of them.

Honestly, I think the pens being is the metro two spot is not a good thing. I'd like to see them avoid the rangers.

The two games in hand I get. That's my problem with the Flyers. Wings don't control their own destiny right now.

Less than 2 weeks until the Blue Jays start. This makes me happier than anything else sports-wise in some time. That being said, when Oilers clear house this off season that will be pretty fun as well.
