Warehouse 7/10 Vol. 2 is spectacular

Posted by Jake Vigliotti in Live Releases on 3/7/14 7:41pm

The Warehouse announced the latest volume in their live-release series, Volume 2 7/10. Fans with 3+ years get the 10, and the rest of the newbees get the 7. The added gift are Firedancer earbuds (which actually sounds pretty cool). Fans with 15+ years in also get a Ticket Collector album (which is even better). But lets get to the real news; the songs this year are amazing. They are...

  • GOOD GOOD TIME 7.10.04 Hersheypark Stadium, Hershey, PA
  • BELLY BELLY NICE 9.7.12 Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre, Chula Vista, CA with Lasim Richards
  • LIE IN OUR GRAVES >> 9.27.94 McIntire Amphitheater, Charlottesville, VA
  • MINARETS 9.27.94 McIntire Amphitheater, Charlottesville, VA
  • LOVER LAY DOWN 10.29.98 San Jose Arena, San Jose, CA
  • ROOFTOP 5.22.13 Austin360 Amphitheater, Austin, TX
  • BLUE WATER >> DRUNKEN SOLDIER 6.26.13 Nikon at Jones Beach Theater, Wantagh, NY
  • And the 3 + years add
  • WAREHOUSE 9.20.00 Sandstone Amphitheatre, Bonner Springs, KS
  • SPOON 6.22.13 Klipsch Music Center, Noblesville, IN with Brandi Carlile
  • DRIVE IN, DRIVE OUT 9.17.11 DMB Caravan: Randallís Island Park New York, NY

If you're not familiar with the 2000 Warehouse(s), you're in for a treat; they are very solid with outstanding intros from Stefan and Roi's outro solos (like this one released) are excellent. Speaking of Roi, he handles the solo on Lie In Our Graves (Boyd took over in 1996 on the solos), and on Lover Lay Down, you'll hear a little interpolation of "Over The Rainbow" from Mr. Moore. And finally, the Cult of Good Good Time can finally stop asking for their favorite version of the song to be released.

This is easily a top-3 Warehouse disc. It should ship in April or May.

The Warehouse Disc is now a 7/10

Posted by Jake Vigliotti in on 2/28/13 6:44pm

The Warehouse announced their annual music disc for members, and the 5/8 is dead. Miss him, miss him. The disc is now a 10/7, with those with 3 more years getting 3 additional songs. The songs are as follows:

  • # 27 09.16.11 Randallís Island Park, New York, NY
  • Sugar Will 03.06.10 O2 Arena, London, England
  • Tripping Billies 08.22.07 Riverbend Music Center, Cincinnati, OH
  • Recently 04.18.09 John Paul Jones Arena, Charlottesville, VA
  • The Riff > 09.07.12 Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre, Chula Vista, CA
  • You & Me 09.07.12 Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre, Chula Vista, CA
  • Snow Outside 09.09.12 Shoreline Amphitheatre, Mountain View, CA

and the 3 additional for members with 3+ years in the Warehouse get:

  • Typical Situation 09.19.07 Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, Charlotte, NC
  • The Dreaming Tree 08.31.07 The Gorge Amphitheatre, George, Washington
  • Kill The King 06.06.06 DTE Energy Music Theatre, Clarkston, MI

The song that stands out the most is Recently. Fans consider that to be the finest version, or at the very least in the top 5 or so. Dreaming Tree in addition to beautiful solos from Leroi and Rashawn, also features what we believe to be the first Time Bomb tease - Dave played the chords in the outro to Dreaming Tree. The Typical Situation from 2007 is the truncated version, that starts with the jam after a brief lyrical interlude from Dave (which is pretty sweet). Kill The King is the first live version of the song, and one the fans consider to be one of the best. The Away From The World tracks are The Riff and Snow Outside, which are both rapidly becoming fan favorites. So if you're not on that boat yet, hop aboard.

The disc is slated for shipping "soon". Which means it should arrive more rapidly than the last few have. So be on the lookout for it next month.

Warehouse 5/8 Announced, but it's more than that

Posted by Jake Vigliotti in Live Releases on 2/7/12 10:21pm

The Warehouse announced their annual Warehouse disc, Warehouse 5 Volume 11 and Warehouse 8 Volume 8 (the 8 for those with 3+ years in the club), and this year, it's a bit more than the usual 8 total tracks. When you factor in all the teases, there's 15 (or 16 - see below) different songs. The tracks are:

  • Pantala Naga Pampa (Gravedigger Intro) > Rapunzel 4.26.02 Allstate Arena, Rosemont, IL
  • Crazy Easy 7.16.04 ctnow.com Meadows Music Theatre, Hartford, CT
  • Gas Into Fire > What Would You Say 6.17.04 UMB Bank Pavilion, Maryland Heights, MO
  • Old Dirt Hill tease > Why I Am 4.18.09 John Paul Jones Arena, Charlottesville, VA
  • Everyday tease > Halloween > Water Into Wine outro 8.5.08 Riverbend Music Center, Cincinnati, OH
  • Sister 6.17.06 Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Saratoga Springs, NY
  • So Damn Lucky 7.14.10 Montage Mountain, Scranton, PA
  • Ants Marching 8.31.93 Trax Nightclub, Charlottesville, VA

The first track features the very first Gravedigger, different lyrically (and musically) from the current version. That Crazy-Easy is generally regarded as if not the best version ever, at the very least the best version lyrically. Gas Into Fire is a tiny snipped of a song brimming with potential, so it's nice to see a clean version of it pop up. Why I Am came from an outro created for Old Dirt Hill in 2007, and the two met in 2009 in Charlottesville in this great version. Also of note is the strong reaction from fans on Dave's first mention of the Groo Grux King. The Halloween fake is epic. And before you go bagging on Sister, this is an especially beautiful version, probably the best ever, so give it a shot, hater. So Damn Lucky has a Thank You outro (second "cover" of sorts on a Warehouse disc), and also you may be able to pick up a Digging A Ditch tease by Rashawn in the jam. Ants Marching actually segued out of Doobie Thing a long lost fan favorite. It's not listed on the track info, so it's probably not on the disc, but there's a chance that a few of its notes make it on during the segue. It's a start I guess.

Naturally, the fan reaction has been extremely positive. And once everyone listens to the Sister and realizes that it's pretty boss, the reaction will only be more sanguine. The disc generally ships 6-8 weeks after the announcement, so don't go checking your mailbox just yet. Wait til tomorrow at least.

Warehouse 5/8 And Live Trax 20 Announced

Posted by Jake Vigliotti in on 3/18/11 8:45am

We tried to warn you not to check out of The Warehouse. The Dave Matthews Band official fan club announced their annual Warehouse 5/8 disc, and it's a whopper. In addition to the disc (8 tracks for those with 3+ years of membership), everyone will get Live Trax 20, from 8.19.93 at the Wetlands Preserve.

First, a bit about the recording. Prior to 1996, DMB recorded their shows on a two-track recording system. So when DMBLive does a release from 1992-1995, it's a two-track recording. It's still mixed (and mixed pretty darn well), but those recording don't have the full-track mixes of 1996 to present. This recording from 1993, thanks to the board at The Wetlands, contains a multi-track recording. This is the earliest live multi-track recording of the band. The show itself is pretty incredible, and fans for years have been making the case that Blue Water Baboon Farm from this show - featuring Warren Haynes - is one of the best ever. Warren guests on a total of 5 songs, including a nice version of True Reflections.

But just when you thought it couldn't get any better, the Warehouse 5/8 is already being talked about as one of the strongest from top to bottom ever. The tracks are:

  • Lying In The Hands Of God 6.6.09 Hartford
  • #40 6.21.08 SPAC
  • You Never Know 9.25.07 Phoenix
  • #34 7.9.05 Mansfield, MA
  • Write A Song 9.3.10 Gorge
  • Kit Kat Jam 8.11.02 Deer Creek
  • A Dream So Real 6.21.08 SPAC
  • Christmas Song 12.20.02 MSG

Everyone with 3+ years in the club get the final 3 songs listed. Rather than listen to us wax poetically on how awesome and winning this Warehouse disc is, lets have the good people of Ants discuss the disc, from the thread on it.

"OMG!!!! I'm so excited!! I can't wait to hear that #40, I was hoping this song would have made it. I can't wait!!!"

"Great job warehouse. You knocked this one out of the park! Thanks. "

"Amazing. Best thing out of the warehouse ever."

"This disc is soooo unreal, it honestly looks like someone on here made it up in a "what would an ideal next WH disc look like" thread! Lovin' this and LT 20"

"No one should be complaining about this. Not only do we get an incredible Warehouse Cd but a free LT."

"Warehouse caught Sheen fever #winning"

Everyone who joined in 2010 gets the Warehouse 5 and Live Trax 20. Everyone. There is no cut-off date as in the past. Additionally, The Warehouse is already working on the 2011 disc, and everyone who signs up for The Warehouse in 2011 gets the goods in early 2012. Which is nice.

Antsmarching.org Contest: Guess the Warehouse Disc

Posted by Jake Vigliotti in Site News on 2/20/11 9:00am

The anticipation for the yearly Warehouse disc is high, as usual. We have decided to help focus that nervous energy of yours in the form of a guessing game. Guess what songs will be on the Warehouse 8 Disc.

The rules are pretty simple, to participate, you merely need to be a member of antsmarching.org, and pick the songs. The person who gets the most correct wins fabulous prizes! Here's the rules:

  • The Order doesn't matter. Just pick 8 different songs, and the person who gets the most correct wins.
  • Fill in the tiebreaker. The tiebreaker would be the total number of the last two digits of the year from the songs you pick. Whereas you only need to pick the songs by title in the drop-down picks, we want you to have an idea of which years those songs would come from. When you follow the link, you'll see an example if you're still confused. Closest to the tiebreaker will, believe it or not, break any ties if anyone ties in their picks for first.
  • Choose from the songs listed only. Yes, not 'every' song is listed, but don't fret, if it's not listed, it's not going to make the disc anyway (probably...). So forget about taking a flier on Weight of the World.

Follow this link to the contest, and best of luck to all that enter! Contest ends the second the announcement is made, and we're time stamping, so don't bother trying to cheat. We got mad detective skills.

  • UPDATE: Congratulations to Ants member Scanlan for successfully nailing 4/8 Warehouse songs, and missing the tiebreaker by a measly 2 points (or years). He guessed A Dream So Real, #40, Write A Song, and Kit Kat Jam correctly! He's won a slew of Ants swag among other luxurious prizes!

Some superlatives from the contest: The most commonly picked song was The Last Stop, and the most commonly picked correct song was Lying In The Hands Of God. The least most commonly picked correct song was poor ole #40.

Did You Renew your Warehouse Membership?

Posted by Jake Vigliotti in on 1/6/11 1:47pm

The big question, especially for newer members is should I renew my membership to The Warehouse? For the first-day and 12/98 members, it's a no-brainer (not to rub it in). But what about the rest of you commoners?

We're not one to tell you how to spend your money, unless you're buying antsmarching.org t-shirts (PM to get sum if interested), but if you can scrap together $35, we think it's worth it. Why?

  • You keep your place in line. Sure, if you only joined last year, it might seem like no big deal dropping out, but people will join up this year, and you will fall behind them.
  • The Warehouse discs. We know, last years was "OK", and there have been some that left some head-scratching, but overall, the Warehouse discs have been pretty sharp. Think of some of the songs to make one; Blue Water>JTR, Let You Down, Raven, #36, Break Free. We like the odds for this years release being nice.
  • Tickets. Yes, there is no tour in 2011. But you don't think that's true, and even Stefan doesn't think that's true. Won't you be melancholy if you find out some form of concert (DMB, D+T, Dave solo) is playing in your neck of the woods and you can't find tickets?

It's up to you, the consumer. We're not telling you how to spend your hard-earned cash, but the people behind you in line will certainly appreciate it if you do indeed choose not to renew.

  • Eh Hee 10.01.2007 / Hollywood Bowl / Hollywood, CA
  • You Might Die Trying 08.15.2006 / HiFi Buys Amphitheatre / Atlanta, GA
  • Gravedigger 08.20.2008 / Staples Center / Los Angeles, CA
  • Stolen Away on 55th and 3rd 09.13.2006 / Pepsi Center / Denver, CO

  • Seven 09.06.2009 / Gorge Amphitheatre / George, WA
  • Time Bomb 09.06.2009 / Gorge Amphitheatre / George, WA

Reaction has been "mixed" (read: bad) by fans. You can read the damage here for yourself. We sort of like Seven, Time Bomb, and Say Goodbye, so we're OK with it. And it's free, after all.

There is a video from Dave's performance (in package form) from The Robert Mondavi Winery at the American Express parings site. You And Me is the featured song, with a few other videos talking about food and wine.

Also, if you're not familiar with the family of ATO Records (that's Dave's label), they are offering a free sampler download of some of their artists. The featured performers are Drive-By Truckers, Rodrigo y Gabriela, John Butler Trio, Dawes and Alberta Cross. The download is available here .

DMB Gift ideas

Posted by Jake Vigliotti in Band Brand on 12/13/08 9:14am

Still searching for that perfect gift for the discriminating DMB fan? We'll do our best to offer some suggestions:

You certainly know of the deals available via The Warehouse - now featuring 20% savings on all Live Trax shows through December 14, so hurry if you want to take advantage of that.

If you're one of those looking for a more unique, we've got you covered there as well.

True Reflections, a book influenced by lyrics from DMB songs is still available here through Rumpus Media. In case you forgot about our review earlier, to sum it up, the book features stories that have some loose ties to DMB songs (like Ants Marching, The Dreaming Tree, etc), the book is a great exercise in creative writing (and reading), and some of the stories are quite outstanding.

If you're 21 or older, and enjoy a nice glass of wine, you could try out Blenheim Vineyards. Dave Matthews is a co-owner of the winery, and they do ship to certain states (but not Florida...). They make a bunch of great wines - Virginia's reputation for wine producing is growing expediently, and this particular winery makes the best Chardonnay I've ever had (but I like em a bit sweet).

And if stalking Dave on Twitter isn't scratching that Dave itch you've got, the ultimate in "I"m a hoarder of all things Dave Matthews" are out there too. A Google search of John Wauchope Matthews yields links to rare book sites and Amazon.com. And who is John W Matthews? That would be the famous physicist, author of over 100 published works, former college professor, and father of 4, including David Matthews.

Happy holidays, and happy shopping!
