Most of us see the problem as 48/(2(9+3)), but apparently it is written to fool those who view it this way(this included me originally). In fact, the question is asking, what is (48/2) times (9+3), the parenthesis separate two separate functions, and using PEDMAS, we are left with 24*12, which equals 288.

This demonstrated the most idiotic thing I've seen in a long time. Not only did the majority get it wrong, but they defended their logic with the math reasoning of a 2 year old. Also, why is it that it was never firmly established that this is merely a matter of notation?

48÷2(9+3) = 288
48÷(2(9+3))=2

What you are essential looking at is 48/2 * (9+3)

because the 2(9+3) are the same number, that sides math must be done before you divide the number.

2*12 = 24
48/24 = 2

While the poll result blows my mind, when you hear about how bad our countries math and science statistics stack up it doesn't really surprise me that 50% of the people got this wrong.

It is obviously set up to be deceiving, but because it's obviously kind of strange you'd think people would really think about it. I'm just used to checking my stuff thoroughly on a daily basis... I'd be really embarrassed if I messed my work up based on some algebraic mishap like this.
