Carter's drum kit

Has anyone ever seen a drummer use as many drums/shakers/sticks/bongo's/chimes and whatever the hell else he uses up there during a show? Or is there anyone else out there that uses a drum kit (I'm not sure if I'm using the right term here but referring to his whole set up) even remotely close his? Any pictures?

Just curious.

Re: Carter's drum kit

I think Neil Peart has the more expansive drum kit (I saw Rush live once), but I feel that Carter has the more instinctual understanding of what great percussion is. Carter just does things that are unreal to me, not just a testament to his technical skills, but to his almost musical drumming.

Re: Carter's drum kit

Peart, Peart, Peart.

I'm Canadian, got to give props. But in all seriousness, Carter owns Neil and Rush annoys me.

But his kit is HUGE.

Not sure how up to date this picture is of Carter's setup, but I had a question having to do with the two sets of foot pedals. I know that the pair of two on the left side is for hi-hat and bass drum, and at least one of the foot pedals on the right side is bass drum as well.. But what's the fourth pedal on the far right for?

http://www.beaufordbuddy.com/images/.../drum_kit3.jpg

In this picture, it almost looks as though it's connected by wire to a synth pad or something.

Left: hi-hat pedal
Middle: double bass drum pedal
Right: remote hi-hat (controls the hi-hat you see on the right. It is something like this)

The four pedals from left to right:

Main hi hats >
Kick 1 >
Kick 2 >
right hi hats (connected via a wire)

that kit would be around 99 or 00 at my guess as that's when carter was using the two sets of hats for two step.

Re: Carter's drum kit

Terry Bozzio uses too many drums to be good... It's all for show.

Sure hes an ok drummer but hes got nothing on the greats and isn't all that 'musical' so to speak like a carter beauford or a steve gadd

That kit is specifically used for drum compositions. Bozzio doesn't play that kit on actual gigs. Most people on hardcore drum sites will tell you that Bozzio is certainly one of the greats.

Re: Carter's drum kit

speaking of triggers....i saw rothbury 2008 on palladia last night and noticed that carter had a red ddrum trigger on his bass drum. is just to help FOH get the perfect sound out of his bass drum or is he actually triggering a different sound for different songs?

to say Carter "owns Neil" is a bit over the top and probably grossly incorrect. Their styles and genre of music are completely different. Neil is also about 57 years old and the guy still can play his arse off. They are both great in their own right. Just very different.

I disagree. I frequent drummerforums and talk with a lot of drummers as I have played myself for around 10 years. Most people I talk to who are really into drums agree that he is fairly overrated and to be honest the only reason people remember him is because he has literally the biggest kit going around.

He really is nothing special, and IMO has hardly anything on any of the 'greats' (Steve Smith, Vinnie Colatia, Dave Weckle, Thomas Lang, Steve Gadd, Dennis Chambers, Buddy Rich... To a lesser extent Carter, Pert and Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater)

Something that blew me away the other day actually, is this kid from NZ. He is like Thomas Lang, except actually MUSICAL! A HUGE talent that is up and coming and at 16 is biting on the heals of most of the best in the business.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHDjGtj18X0

His stick tricks and groove gets incredible in the second half.

If you want to say Bozzio isn't one of the greats, I don't have a gripe with that. I'm not really into his stuff, but I do appreciate what he does. There's a difference between "he's not on the same level as Colaiuta" and "pity he sucks." That was my point. Bozzio can play.

Also, I don't put Portnoy even near the level as the other names you listed, and personally am not a huge Peart fan either.
