Re: The National

my top 10 hasn't changed much from a few years ago when we were doing this game: Bloodbuzz, Apartment, Geese, Baby WBF, Slow Show, City Middle, Ada, All The Wine, Karen, Green Gloves...I can see Pink Rabbits in there too, the 8-10 spot pretty much changes all the time.

Just finished the movie. It's pretty great, especially if you have a younger sibling and understand the dynamic that comes along with that. I enjoyed it.

    Per IMDb:

In 2010, rock band The National were about to embark on the biggest tour of their career. After ten years as a band, and five critically acclaimed albums, they were finally enjoying wider recognition. Lead singer Matt Berninger invited his younger brother, Tom, to join the tour's crew. A budding horror filmmaker, Tom - who is nine years younger than Matt and listens exclusively to heavy metal - decided to bring his camera along. Tom's at sea in the world of indie rock, and living in his brother's shadow brings out the younger sibling in him - he drinks, complains, and struggles to balance his ambition with his tour responsibilities. The result is a film about brothers and about making something of your own.

    Re: The National

Did you guys see the AMA they did a few days ago with Matt's brother about the documentary? It was like half band talk, half documentary talk. Aaron dropped this tidbit about "Terrible Love", which I never knew:

Hi! On The High Violet Expanded Edition there's an alternate version of Terrible Love. What was the motive behind putting another version on the album? Do you like it more or less than the 'normal' version?

    TheNationalandTomVerified[S] 38 points 21 hours ago

The album version of Terrible Love is actually my demo for the song. I felt like I could never recapture that guitar tone (the loose wool sound) because when I did I was looping myself and it built up into this big thick fuzzy sound that we all loved. So we didn't even try to record it "properly", we just built the song around the demo. Bryan played along to it one day just briefly in my garage studio and I only had one mic up...it sounded really cool so we just kept. We only realized how amazing the song is live when we played it for the first time on the Jimmy Fallon show in 2010 -- that's when we realized it would have been a good idea to at least record the drums with more than one mic to capture all the detail in bryan's playing. Anyway, later on we just re-recorded it in a studio in Williamsburg one day. It came out pretty well so we used that for the radio single, but we all prefer the album version aesthetically still. Aaron

saw them tuesday. awesome show. during terrible love, matt came down into the audience and was right over by where we were sitting. sat down in my aisle about 4 seats away and then walked through the aisle directly in front if me on his way back to the stage. pretty fucking cool experience.

In 3 shows, I've seen these songs 3 times: Available, Mr. November, Fake Empire, Squalor Victoria, Slow Show, Terrible Love, Afraid of Everyone, Bloodbuzz Ohio, England, and Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks.

Just miles better than the Jimi, Shake Me, You & Me, etc you get at every Dave show.

Saw the documentary last night. People actually liked it? I found Tom so annoying that I couldn't even come around to liking it. It was ego-centric around Tom to a fault. The only redeeming parts were seeing behind the scenes stuff of the band.
