Re: New Nintendo console in 2012
To the latter, it's just a matter of timing. The system isn't going to be out until probably a month, maybe two, before next year's E3. So there's really not much they can do as far as showing things off, as there's nothing there yet. As I've guessed a few times, they'll probably run their own conference come, say, October, to announce the price point/release date/initial lineup, kind of like Microsoft did on MTV back in 2005.
And again, it's not like systems sit around done for along time. Talking about that 360 debut on MTV, the timeline for that was this: mid-May 2005, MTV unveiling. E3 2005, in June, the console was on the convention floor. And the system was launched in November 2005.
But here's the thing: the units that were on the convention floor? Weren't really even 360s. They were running off of PowerMacs, and it was later said that they were running at about 30% of the 360's launch capacity. So that console, just 5 months from launch, wasn't even done yet. So I can't really fault Nintendo for not having much, nearly a year out. If anything, I'd fault them on going too much too soon. Once Game Informer leaked information, I would've just put out an announcement saying "like all entertainment companies, we are always looking for ways to improve our products. We are currently looking into future opportunities, and will make an announcement at some time in the future." Or something bland like that. And then do their own launch event sometime in the fall, and blow people away with the launch lineup and new tech.
