Re: David Fincher & Kevin Spacey's HOUSE OF CARDS On Netflix (2.1.13)

Just finished Season 3. This definitely had the slowest start of the three seasons, and I would still say that I wish it had picked up a bit more steam sooner, but those final three episodes might be the three episode run of the whole series. Just absolutely stellar.

The last episode of S3 is one of the best 50 minutes of TV I've ever watched. Loved the cold open... at first I thought it was an Underwood campaign ad

just finished. season 3 never really took off. doug's entire arc was pointless and dumb. the author's stroy arc was pointless and dumb. the only interesting thing was dunbar but not enough...

you can't win them all i guess.

I thought the wheelings and dealings with the Russian President (and his ambassador in the UN) were very interesting too.

I just finished episode 6 last night. I don't know about you guys, but I love this season so far. Don't find it or boring or slow in the slightest.

We're finally getting a full season's worth of "what happens when you get exactly what you want?" Usually, it's never as good as you think it'll be. And so far, we're finally seeing Frank having to deal with a ton of problems, and he's been losing a lot. It's time to see the house of cards start to fall a part (pun intended).

I agree with that synopsis for the most part. I also felt like this season the writers were being a lot more heavy handed or blatant in their real world social commentary. I didn't think that was bad per se (I agreed with their social commentary actually), but it was definitely noticeable whereas it wasn't so much in the first two seasons.

they really stressed the real world actions. Agree.

at first, I thought it was a MAJOR time jump, like to after the general in 2016. Yes, I guess Spacey put on the wrong wig.

Agreed. I thought that several times during this season, especially in the Pussy Riot episode. S3 felt more "political" not so much in the concept of the show but they were actually bringing real issues into the script. I don't want to say it was "preachy" because it wasn't but they definitely made their point and expressed an opinion.

Funniest thing to me so far is they got a Russian actor who bears a striking resemblance to Vladimir Putin, then gave him the same initials (Victor Petrov), had him be a total fucking dick, and had him pass laws against gay "propaganda."

Well yeah, they were basing that completely on what's happening in the real world and the writers definitely let everyone know what they think of Putin and what's going on in Russia. That's what I was talking about.

What does everyone think of the America Works concept in general? Without trying to really make it a partisan discussion, what do you think the writers are trying to say by having a Democrat bring up the idea of gutting social safety nets to fund a government jobs program? Are they trying to make social commentary with it or is it just a way to show Frank as being overreaching with his power, or both?

really? I don't think Lars Mikkleson(sp?) and Putin look anything remotely alike.

I did find it odd, that with my limited political knowledge, that a Democrat was ending entitlement programs. I don't know much about partisan attributes but it's always been my understanding Democrats favor them. I wasn't sure what to make of that in the show. There's something there to that beyond just a storyline.

Finished the season. As others have already said, it had such a different feel this year seeing how Frank is now trying to stay at the top instead of leaving scorched earth and dead bodies on his way to the Oval Office. Lots of great moments, though, spoiled below.

I think America Works was used because it was a program neither party could support, ending entitlements and subsidizing jobs.

USA Today ripped apart S3 in their review:

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/...flix/24433701/

I wouldn't say it was as bad as that review says. It was definitely different than the previous 2 seasons, but that's because in the previous 2 seasons he was working his way up to the top. What did they expect would happen when Frank got on top?

Was not a fan at all of this season. Seth is easily my favorite character and every time Jackie Fucking Sharp shows up on the screen I want to throw my tv out the window. She's awful.
