First off, 2003 was nuts. NUTS. Incredible sets left and right.

Throw in JTR, Raven, Grace, and eventually Last Stop, and for a moment 2006 seemed like our band was finally back!
Even the new songs were pretty exciting. Shotgun was evolving each time it was played, Idea of You seemed like their next big single, Break Free and Kill The King had a funky Everyday-esque vibe to them, and for a brief moment, we didn't all hate Sister.
And for the record, I enjoyed Rashawn then and I enjoy him now. It's Tim that I ironically have a bit of an issue with, though they've turned him down a lot in 2014 finally.

This is exactly how I felt. You nailed it. Even Can't Stop at the time was just a funky intro to Crush. It hadn't evolved yet into the massive piece of shit it is now.
Sadly, like a lot of others have mentioned, I am of the firm belief that I will never be this excited about DMB or see another show even close to being on par with these ever again. 2008 Alpine is really the only thing, IMO, that has come even close to 2006 (first half), 2004, and 2003 in terms of "post Everyday DMB". I will never understand what happened that weekend, but for some reason, they found "it" again for two nights.
2003 was incredible. 2006's first half brought about some REAL excitement in the band, and then they just shit on it again. That's part of the real depressing part about DMB. Time and time again they seemed like they were on the right path and then just went in a TOTALLY different direction that no one understands. It's half-assed efforts and a failure to really give a shit about anything outside of the easy path.
I've said it a couple times before, but I really have a hard time differentiating from the last couple tours. 2009-2014 have basically been the same rehashed shit. Two sets really didn't add any new flavor besides the first set being "acoustic" even though most of the songs were basically the same exact thing. They've just become stale.
I remember getting on the boards in 2004 or 2006, etc. and reading REAL excitement about the band. People genuinely wanting to discuss sets, the new music...I remember the buzz around Stand Up coming out...God that shit was exciting.
