Solid review -- though I would say that the lyrical value of the songs would be "inconsistent" rather than poor throughout, which seems to be your implication. Also Shake Me Like a Monkey makes me cringe everytime I hear it, so to say that one of these songs is at all reminiscent of that scares me a bit. But I am being picky -- solid review and I agree with almost all of it.

4.6 with these lyrics? It sounds like Dave has said everything he needs to say in this lifetime. The lyrics seem rhyme-y and like they should be Obama's campaign material. I like the music, but if I'm going to give anything above a 4.5 / 5, I'm going to need those soulful, deep, mysterious lyrics that took me years to dissect and comprehend. "We've got to do much more than believe if we really wanna change things," it's a good message and true, but not what I want from my Dave lyrics. Honestly it's a 3.75 for me.

So do the lyrics to Dreaming Tree, but no one ever seems to complain.

Re: antsmarching.org Away From The World Review

Matt, very well done and I love the review, but I had to come in here and offer a correction to this passage:

"The one very high point of the song is Rashawn's layers towards the end of the song. It takes a powerful chorus and absolutely takes it to the next level. Tim's solo out of the inspired bridge really turns the tempo up into one of the best finishes on the album."

It is Rashawn's solo out of the bridge, not Tim's. And so you were correct that Rashawn is very strong at the end of the song, but he is carrying the song from the end of the bridge all the way to the end. Just wanted to make sure that was cleared up.

    Great job again man!

I agree with much of the review and it is well written. What I don't agree with is the final rating, as I place a higher emphasis on lyrics in terms of ranking a DMB album. Without any powerhouse storytelling lyrical songs, I can't see it getting a 9/10.

Still like Big Whiskey More at this point, though i do find some of these songs very enjoyable. Probably The Riff is my favorite so far. Id give it 3.5/5 at this point. With BW getting a 3.8/5. Need more listens.

    BS
    BTCS
    UTTAD
    Crash
    R2T
    BW
    AFTW
    ED
    SU

boom boom shake the room. Though its got upward potential. So does BW at this point.

"Snow Outside" could have come off UTTAD, it's the one track that fully captures that old sound. Just amazing.

I am not trying to stir up hate for AFTW, because it has very much grown on me in the last week, but one thing that bothers me about the album is that it seems more like a Dave solo album than a full band album. Even before this review, I had talked to other fans about it and they agreed.

So, if we say that an album feels more like a Dave solo effort, and then say it's in the "Big 4" and better than literally half their other albums or, as some people have said, even better than any of the Big 3, aren't we kind of dissing the rest of the band? I love Dave, and I could listen to Some Devil forever, but I don't come to a DMB album to have him be the centerpiece with the rest of the band chiming in.

Saying it feels a certain way is far different than saying it is that way. Just b/c Dave takes center stage doesn't mean the bands presence is diminished. Everyone on this record plays really well, and I think it's kind of a slap to say they chime in. Boyd has more to do on this record than any since Streets. Tim plays subtly but beautifully. Carter is doing what he always does (along with Fonz) and the horns layer like no other record before.

I know this might sound petty, but I am somewhat offened that the author refers to them as Dave Matthews and The Band.

    No one said it was?

Why would it be a slap to the band to say that I want to hear more of them? Like the person below you said, the author of the article referred to this album as being by "Dave Matthews and The Band." If that doesn't indicate the band's presence is diminished, I don't know what does.

    Quote:

I'm not talking diminished in quality, but quantity. The music that IS there is great, but just look at Sweet -- why doesn't the band come in until the song is 75% over?

I like this album a lot, much more than I did a week ago. But if every album were a pie chart with each band member's focus their own slice, Dave's pie piece would be bigger on this pie chart than it ever has been. Since you can't magically have more pie, that means that the rest of the band's pieces are smaller. Isn't it a bigger slap to the band to say one prefers it that way?

"If you don't like this album, you don't like good music."

Dave made that quote during the release of Everyday, and has paraphrased it with the release of every album since. Amazingly, he has been silent with the release of this album, and Away From the World deserves this statement to be said more so than any other DMB album of the past 14 years. If you do not like Away From the World, then you do not like good music!

....even Homer Simpson can figure that one out.

I was hesitant about the album because this summer the songs we heard did not impress me at all lyrically. Gaucho was the only one musically they I liked. But this album is perfectly put together. I wanted nothing to do with sweet on this album, they NAILED IT I am in love. It's so touching. Best version of sweet to ever be played. This album will have a lot of staying power for me

I agree with the lyrics on this album. They are not big 3 quailty, but there are good moments. The whole stay the same change the game on the riff is dumb. Gauchos lyrics are so so bad. DS has some clunkers lyrically too

I read your review after listening to the whole album once. Great review. The breakdown of every song was spot on.

My favourite song from the album keeps on changing.

With regards to the lyrics: I see your point, but I think the lack of ambiguity works on this album. Its almost like they don't want the message getting lost or misinterpreted. Just my thought anyway. I suppose you do need something to compare it to the older albums though so definitely worth noting.

Stop what? he was complaining that the new stuff sounds "rhyme-y" All I did was make a comparison to one of the best songs Dave has ever written, which also happens to sound "rhyme-y".

Dave and lyrics? look at his lyrics forever....there aren't as many strong spots lyrically as on the big 3, sure i can see it. but dave has written so many clunkers. so many weak songs. so many repetitive themes. from 1-800-help myself on. awful songs. there are cases in point on every album. there are some solid moments on this album lyrically. it is better than any album outside of the big 3 to me.

i agree it has a dave solo feel, in how his voice is front and center. with tim on acoustic it sounds like a dave and tim show in ways, which i think is a really cool feel, but it also highlights each member of the band in a better way than any album, again, since the big 3. stefan, might be his best album. he kills it. the horn arrangements and fills, and playing, best in a long long time...better than some big 3 stuff to me. boyd, more noticable than any album since the big 3. lillywhite did a GREAT job.

some hate the lyrics. really, since bartender was written, there are very few great lyrical achievements in dave's catalog. sure you can name some, but there aren't many. but in the 90's there are also a lot more duds than hardcore fans seem willing to admit.

the review was great and very accurate. to me, the best two songs (this has never happened to me on any album) are the last two songs. Snow Outside and Drunken Soldier are fantastic. but i still enjoy listening to each song on the album too. that also is rare and speaks to the overall quality of what thye have laid down
