Re: The Gaslight Anthem

I really like where they went with Handwritten. My friend described it well as 'pearl jam meets warped tour'.

It's definitely a great album.

Great article. Harsh at some points, but brings up a lot of good points about the band's direction.

I read this earlier today and thought the same thing. A bit harsh and frank, but it seems like a take from an actual fan of the band. Great read.

    haahaha...this made me laugh

"When Fallon sings, yet again, about feeling big feelings while flippin' around the radio dial, like he does in "Mae" and the zippy title track, it fails the bullshit test. Sorry, dude, but you grew up during one of the worst eras for rock radio ever. There's no way you romanced Mary or Betty back in the late '90s to the dulcet sounds of Mudvayne. It's more likely you fell in love with Mackenzie or Taylor while downloading a torrent of Rancid albums."

Even though Brian isn't really singing about himself in a lot of those songs..their pinnacle album is called The '59 Sound of godsakes, still funny though.

the bonus cover of "Sliver" (nirvana) really makes me wish this band would just do an "pedal to the metal, all out rock as hard as they possibly can" album, instead of these pop rock ballads. im still liking Handwritten more and more though. it's not bad at all, just not what i was hoping for.

I thought that Grantland article was not very good to be honest. Some decent points, but overall I thought it was way too harsh and general

At work and on my phone, so I'll be brief.

Mae was a great surprise as the opener. Stunning. Never seen them open up with a slow song before. All the new songs sounded great, especially Handwritten and Mulholland.

Brian sang Crash Into Me during the Angry Johnny interlude which was a nice treat. He did the first verse and then repeated "in a boy's dream" over the build.

Now the encore... holy shit. Songs for Teenagers was a great surprise. I think I'd only listened to it once or twice before but it's a great tune. The crowd went NUTS for Senor & The Queen and especially The Patient Ferris Wheel. Elvis is my favorite song of theirs and then the bridge into Wooderson was great. It should also be noted that American Slang and Backseat should be switched on the setlist above.

Dave Hause was great. I had very high expectations and I'd say he met them. I don't think I've seen anyone have that much energy with just one guitar before.

Heh I originally had Backseat as closer an somebody on another board said it was the other way around. I figured that Backseat probably closed, my bad. Glad you enjoyed it man, it looked fantastic. I saw a video of Handwritten this morning an it sounded like they killed it

Queen of Lower Chelsea is an interesting choice.

I can't choose one so I will say "1930", "Drive", "Old White Lincoln, "The '59 Sound" and "Miles Davis and the Cool". But all of 59 Sound is perfect to me. Hard to put anything above "Great Expectations" or "Here's Looking at You, Kid".

"45", "Handwritten" and "Howl" are just as good as those songs too

Almost impossible to just pick one, but I will say that one more unorthodox (I suppose) pick for me is Film Noir. That song I just fantastic and one I find that I listen to quite a bit.

My favorites on Handwritten are the title track, Howl, 45, and Too Much Blood right now.

To shed some light on my choice, I got into the band when American Slang came out (though I saw them live back in 2008 as an opening act for Rise Against and liked their sound). Queen of Lower Chelsea really jumped out at me off the album and it was the song that really kept me listening.

I like the song a lot too. Very unique sound for the gaslight catalog. It's got that Motown feel to it.

Yes, it shows the artsy side of Gaslight, not afraid to dabble in past genres. Like Howl off the new album. It feels like a late 50's song by the Kinks. Just a fast-paced, two-minute rock song.

It was definitely favorite when American Slang first came out, though it's not anymore. Such a unique song for them.

They did "Crash Into Me" again in NYC two nights ago, god this band is so perfect.

LQ videos of "Handwritten" and "Howl" are on youtube, those songs look like fucking beasts live. I'm still lukewarm about the studio version of the title track, but damn so much nrgz.

And "Howl" has officially taken over as my favorite track on the record.

They were both fantastic live. I love that Brian is now able to put down the guitar for a few songs and get in the crowd's face. It really added to Howl (and Old White Lincoln).

After a few more listens to the new album and re-reading the Grantland article, the author of the article seems more and more bitter. I think Handwritten is a very good album, and certainly much better than you'd think if you hadn't heard it and only read this guy's article.

He came off as a very jaded ex fan to me. The article almost made it seem like they dropped a Stand Up level bomb. Even if you don't love it, it's a very solid record. I personally think it's great. For me at this point I'm very happy that after 4 albums and an EP, no matter how you rank them, they've yet to put out something that I don't think is good. In fact there really isn't a song of theirs that I don't enjoy. Obviously I prefer some to others, but their body of work and consistency has been very impressive so far imo.

He really comes off as 'I was listening to these guys back when..."

Takes some really unnecessary shots at Brian, basically questioning if Fallon has a spine of his own or if it's just Bruce disguised. How about that's just the way Brian sings/writes? Time to accept that and move on.

And his complaint about losing almost all of their punk roots? These guys are 30, if they were up there churning out punk record after punk record, their audience wouldn't be as diverse as it is today.

    Exactly!

    1) Brian is Brian. Not Bruce. Nobody will be Bruce. Does Brian have obvious influences (in a good way) from Springsteen? Absolutely. But never have I been listening and thought they were some mock-Springsteen cover band, which is basically what he's suggesting.

    2) About the punk roots thing. That just bothers me. Does he want their sound to stay stagnant their entire career? He writes as if The Gaslight Anthem has suddenly turned into Green Day. I think he should just trade in his old Gaslight records and move on.
