Re: *** Official Chicago 7/4 & 7/5 Thread ***

The only shitty part is that they actually do have an extremely strict 11pm curfew. Only way DMB can break that is negotiating it before the show, just like Phish did with their 3-set N2.

Is the curfew both nights or just Fri? Would they make acceptions since it's the 4th?

It'll be both nights. Curfews suck. It could really put a damper on the sets

Are the 4th of July fireworks being set off from Navy Pier? Would the sound carry down that far if they are? If there's a curfew, and we have to wait for a huge fireworks display to finish, that doesn't leave much time for a concert.

Did anyone at the Phish show notice if there were boats in the water near the venue? Wondering if we boated down and anchored if we can hear the music....

July 4th fireworks typically go off at about 9:30.

They aren't holding off the concert until after that for the fireworks to finish

The fireworks aren't THAT loud. If anything, they will just contribute to the ambiance.

I didn't notice any boats outside the harbor but I wasn't looking and it stormed all three days

I have read many conflicting reviews of this venue as was recently changed. The venue itself, I was told by a Phish fan that if you go, don't do the lawn as you cannot hear and the sound is terrible, but the GA floor area, that I guess is big, is excellent. Anyone have any insights to this venue, is it worth it?

I was at an Umphrey's concert in which there were fireworks going off on either side of the venue for the 4th, only a couple blocks away. They didn't stop and it didn't ruin the sound at all. In fact, it was really cool. The band turned and watched them while they played.

I wasn't at that show you linked to, but I have seen UM a bunch. Here's a crappy screenshot from a video I took during the fireworks, you can see the band turned and looking over at them.

9:00 at Navy Pier. I can't see this being a problem at all.

Haven't been to Charter One since I saw John Mayer there back in 2007. I know back then you were able to sit on the beach and listen to the show but I don't think you can do that anymore.. someone might have to verify.

However, I don't think you can get close enough w/ a boat to be able to hear anything... at least this idea hasn't crossed my mind of something I would want to do.

I haven't seen the new venue layout since they redid it last year but I don't think its a good idea.

The fireworks shouldn't interfere at all. They light them off every Wednesday and Saturday (I believe) in the summer and unless you are really close you don't hear them.

My friend's parents have a boat in Burnham harbor, which is the harbor right next to NI. They always go down there and listen to shows, and I've had many friends tell me they take their boat down and pull up to listen to shows. However I have no idea how good the sound quality is - I think they go more for the fun of it and for the "background" music.

I have a feeling a lot of people who have boats and attend will end up tailgating in the harbor. Especially since it's the 4th of July. We hung out in Burnham Harbor last year for 4th of July and ended up staying at the docks the whole time. Boating on the 4th is a total shit show, everyone is drunk and everyone who has a boat is out so it's very crowded.

A few years ago we went boating on the 4th and it was a total nightmare.

Expect the entire area by NI to be crazy congested. Not just everyone attending the show, but hundreds of people will go down to Musuem Campus/Shedd area/NI just to picnic and watch the fireworks.

Overall NI isn't as bad as people are making it out to be, it's just a totally different experience than going to Alpine, Deer Creek, etc.

I'm not sure if I'd be able to get in town for a night 0 party if one happened, but I think it'd be fun to get a group of ants together downtown during one of the days.

Didn't really backread, but I was thinking I'd be able to make these shows since I'll have the 4th off. Is the venue accessible by El train? If not, that may present problems for me. Having to fly in from MS. And I may be flying solo.

Springsteen went over curfew at Wrigley field by an hour and 15 minutes in 2012. Curfews can always be broken (except in London).

It will be absolute madness on the 4th. I stay as far away from Chicago on the 4th as possible. I'll probably do Summerfest and N2 at Northerly.

You can access Northerly Island by train/bus/on foot. WAY easier than Caravan.

NI is right by Shedd Aquarium, Planetarium, Soldier Field, the lakefront, so an easy bus ride/walk from most hotels

You can get pretty close to NI but will have to do some walking. I think Roosevelt is the closest El stop.

So, I'm going to sound like a complete loser, but gonna ask.

My normal DMB buddy can't make it the Chicago shows (he's opting to do Camden and I can't make those because of work). So, I'm looking for some people to let me 5th wheel it with. I've tackled a lot of shows by myself but I'm not sure I want to do Chicago or a two-nighter solo.

Definitely don't sound like a loser... Just a committed fan! Have no fear you're always welcome with someone.. If not they're stupid and you shouldn't hang with them anyways. Always welcome with my group, tho I may wander solo to meet people. Don't worry you'll find someone to hang with

Curfews shouldn't concern us too much. Hell, Pearl Jam took a rain delay at 11 then played until 2am earlier this summer at Wrigley!

I just realized this, I did Wrigley and Chicago Caravan by myself, had an amazing time at both. I met people at each show and they took me in and let me hang out with them. Hopefully there will be an Ants meetup sometime that weekend as well. That'll help. I say go for it

Thanks! I may take you up on that.

Thanks friend. I've asked a few friends if they'd just like to spend the weekend in Chicago so I'd have someone to hang out with during the day at least if they don't want to go to the shows. It'd be cool to have an Ants meet up either way.
