I've never been to Chicago so tips are welcome!
You know where to find me.

This is something I threw together for someone I work with, it might help some here:

    Quote:
    Places to go in Chicago:

    - Shedd Aquarium
    - Sears Tower (lines can be really long on a Saturday though. I’m talking 1-2 hour wait…)
    - Millennium Park/the bean
    - Magnificent Mile
    - Navy Pier (I’d avoid it, but it’s probably the second most touristy thing to do after the Sears Tower/Bean. It’s a total tourist trap though, there’s really not much there. I’ve only been like twice and I lived there for 28 years.)
    - Lincoln Park Zoo

    Places to eat:
    - I’d rank pizza places like this in order from best to worst (first off – disclaimer, deep dish is the “touristy” thing in Chicago to do. Locals don’t really eat deep dish. Thin crust Chicago pizza is the bee’s knees. If you want to check the box, try deep dish, if you want the best, Chicago thin. Or you could be adventurous and get both in one dinner)

    o Deep dish
    • Lou Malnati’s
    • Giordano’s
    • Pizano’s
    • Pequod’s
    • Actual garbage
    • Gino’s East
    • Uno’s

    o Thin crust
    • Pizano’s
    • Aurelio’s
    • Beggar’s
    • Giordano’s
    • Anything else

    - Other food:

    o Hot dogs/Italian beef
    • Portillo’s
    • Al’s

    o Nicer/actual restaurants:
West Loop – easy transport from your hotel and to the theatre – probably your best/easiest bet. You can head down “Restaurant Row” which is Randolph St. west of Halsted. This is probably my top recommendation since you’re only there for one day.
    • Au Cheval (it’ll likely be a wait, but if you want actual really good food, it was recently voted the best burger in the country. Their grill starts at 5, I’d recommend getting there around 4:15 and having a cocktail while waiting for the grill to start. If you get there after 5:30, expect a wait of at least an hour, if not more. In that case, there’s my favorite bar in the city right next door called Lone Wolf.
    • Girl & the Goat - Very high demand – almost need to make a reservation a month+ in advance. If you want to do this place, you’d want to get here early to put your name in then walk around to other bars, etc. kind of like Au Cheval.
    • Maude’s Liquor Bar - A little pretentious, but they really do have great food and cocktails. A little more expensive.
    • Vivo - Classic Italian place. Great pasta, great wine list.
    Old Town/Lincoln Park
    • Perennial Virant (here’s a video my buddy shot for the head chef’s places to give you an idea -
Logan Square (my old neighborhood, so I’m really partial to this place. It’s probably too far for you, but it has some of my favorite spots in the city. This might be for another day)
    • Table, Donkey & Stick
    • Longman & Eagle

    o Brunch:
    • Pub Royale (my favorite)
    • Kanela Breakfast Club
    • Cafe Marie-Jeanne

    o Bars:
Three Dots and a Dash - Tiki bar recently on the "World's 50 Best Bars" list
    • Lost Lake - Like Three Dots...but better. Started by Paul McGee (former head bartender at Three Dots) because he didn't like what Three Dots became (sort of a douchey hang out). Super chill, great drinks, guaranteed to get you fucked up. And it's in my old neighborhood.
    • The J. Parker - Rooftop bar in Old Town/Lincoln Park. Swanky, but really great views
    • Cindy's (Chicago Athletic Club hotel) - Another rooftop bar, this one is way closer to the venue. Jam packed every summer night, probably even more so nights of shows. I would avoid just because of crowds, but it is cool.
    • Revolution Brewing - This is probably the most well-known brewery in the city. Half-Acre is my favorite brewery for beer, but this place has great food too. Great beer, great atmosphere, great food...awesome spot. And it's right next door to:
    • Emporium Logan Square - Video game bar. Tons of games, air hockey, bubble hockey, old school Pac-man, etc. Highly recommend.
    • Green Door Tavern/The Drifter - My favorite "Speakeasy" just because of the history. It's a basement bar of the Green Door Tavern, which is the oldest drinking establishment in Chicago. It's an actual speakeasy that Al Capone used to frequent during prohibition.
Anyway, I could go on forever. Let me know if you want more.

I was there in 2014 in the PIT and the sound was fine. However, that was DMB not D&T. Was really thinking Chicago Theater would be the better venue for an acoustic show. The venue isn't that great, it's a pain in the ass to get to, but I will be going both nights lol.

    See you all there!

What about hotels that are close to venue and in a safe/nice area?

First off - let's put this disclaimer out there for everyone:

Everywhere you're staying will be safe. Unless you're staying in Austin/Garfield Park/Englewood...you're fine. What Chicago has done is basically push the gangs into the south and far west and then abandon those neighborhoods. You know in "The Wire" when they create Hamsterdam? It's basically a real-life version of that (except not as extreme).

Personally? If you want to be close? The Drake, The Hilton Garden Inn (North Loop area), etc. are usually affordable and decent enough hotels. Hyatt Regency is fine too.

If cost is a big deal - I'd stay out by ORD and just take the blue line from Rosemont. The el runs all day every day, so transport is pretty easy back downtown.

It's right by the Planetarium which is a pain in the ass to get to....especially when 30,000 + are going all at once for a show. There's basically only 1 lane of traffic going each way. You could walk it if you stay in the south loop by Soldier Field, but it would take 30 + minutes.

What should be a 10 minute cab ride from the loop turns into a 35 min + and jacked up fees.

It's just in a very inconvenient location for car transport. Kevtalia nailed it. I mean, it's simple to get close, but then the last 3/4 mile might take 20 minutes.

Honestly, I'd recommend pregaming at Scout or Flo + Santos and then just walking over. It'd be a 20-25 minute walk, but it'd be much easier, cheaper and less stressful than an Uber. And it'd take you about the same amount of time anyway.

Luckily I am used to sitting in traffic. I'm looking at the Hilton Chicago which looks to be the closest. Also hoping to spend a few days before and after there so I can do some sight seeing.

Are you coming up for the shows?

+1 on pregame at Scout. Big bar with good grub and cold beer! That is most likely where our group will go.

Yeah, it's nothing like LA traffic, but you'd likely just be spending an extra $20 to sit in an Uber that last stretch.

Eh, I'm debating at least one of them. Depends on sets. I probably won't know until May timeframe. I have a lot going on right now that my life/living situation around that time is...well...let's just say not certain. I'll PM you more details, but we'll see.

Yeah, it's definitely good food for pretty standard pub fare, but I've also seen the Hawks there on more than 1 or 2 occasions.

I've heard that. A buddy lives right around the corner on Michigan now and has seen some of those guys there, as well.

Yep. I had a buddy that lived on the corner of State and 11th for like 3 years or so. We used to walk down Wabash to Flo + Santos all the time. Saw Versteeg and Sharpie at Scout during the summer of 2013 after they won the Cup.

Such a long walk from anything when you have been drinking all day and have to pee.

I told myself after the shows in 2014 never again for dMb so absolutely no chance for D+T....count me in for the Nashville shows.

Worked for both Marriott and Hilton - employee discounts were on par with one another. Friends and Family discounts were laughable.

Might as well do Alpine with camping. 6,000 seats at Alpine, 8,000 at Northerly, but the lawn is actually OK with a sight line. Northerly is so difficult to deal with. I'll stop my bitching now.

I REALLLY wish they would have done Jay Pritzker Pavilion. 1000000% better for a show like this.

But, it's not Live Nation, ya know...so $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ for Coran Cap$haw.

Ha, didn't know the name of it, but was looking up millennium park. That seating is 11,000. Perfect, done.

Going to Red Hot Chili Peppers couple weeks later so looks like I am sitting this one out. Hated NI in 2014 is a big driver. Seats and Pit were bearable but horror stories on the lawn. Alpine or Gorge 2018!
