Stepping Feet in San Diego

So I was in San Diego last weekend and I was randomly walking by this bar and heard a live band playing LIOG so I payed the $5 cover and went in. They were suprisingly good even taking my drunken request for bartender and playing it well.

Anyway they are playing a full DMB tribute show at the Belly Up in San Diego on 1/29. Im gonna go and just want to let all you soCal ants know that its worth checking out for the 14 bucks.

Anyone in San Diego looking for something to do tonight should check out Stepping Feet at the Belly Up. They do a great DMB tribute show!

You can hear some clips of them on their website.

    http://www.steppingfeet.com/

Check out the video on the sounds page of just the lead singer and another guitarist doing a Dave and Tim style Ants Marching. The vid was from last Friday at Gordon Biersch on Mission Valley.

Might go check this out tonight. Saw them last year at the BU and wasn't too impressed.

Other notable upcoming shows at BU

Jake Shimabukuro 4/8 (amazing ukulele player)
ALO 4/11 (If you like DMB, you'll love these guys)
Steve Poltz 4/19 (popular local folk singer, gets crazy at his shows)

Really? I usually think their Belly Up shows are a lot of fun. I like when they do non-DMB tribute shows though bc they do a lot of other good covers mixed in with their DMB stuff.

Were you more dissapointed in their song selection last time you saw them or just in the quality of the music/performance?

Listened to a bunch of their stuff online...got some great musicians in the band. One of their part-time members I believe is also in 40oz to Freedom (Sublime Tribute). They do a great job at DMB, Sublime, and other covers they do.

If I was on the other side of the country, would definitely want to check them out.

Yeah I just read through that thread. I'm pretty sure I was at that show, but I see them kind of a lot so I don't remember the details of it. Maybe they were just having a bad night.

With the setlists at the all DMB shows they do it can be good or bad depending what you like to hear. They will play a lot of the hits like Ants, Two Step, WWYS, SMTS -> TM, Rapunzel, Grey Street, etc. But they'll also mix in the ocassional DIDO, Dreaming Tree, Pig, JTR, BOWA, Watchtower, LIOG. So as long as you don't go expecting to hear Spotlight and Halloween you should leave happy. My one complaint is that they haven't made much of an effort to learn the Big Whiskey songs. They do a good version of FTWII, but that's it so far.

Hopefully they surpass your expectations if you end up making it out tonight.

Oh and if anyone wants to say tonight hi I'll be wearing a gray Philadelphia Eagles shirt and I'm pretty tall so I'm easy to spot. I'll be there with my wife and Emily DMB from Ants.

Great show last night. It was pretty packed in there. I'm guessing around 500 people. I think Billies sounded a little off to start the night but by the time they hit Warehouse they had found their groove.

    Setlist

    Tripping Billies
    The Song That Jane Likes
    Warehouse
    Grey Street
    Funny the Way It Is
    Grace Is Gone
Jimi Thing (For What It's Worth) (Wanna Be Startin Somethin)
    Lie In Our Graves
    What Would You Say
    Ants Marching
    Viva La Vida (Coldplay)
    The Stone
    Two Step
    The Dreaming Tree
    Say Goodbye
    #41
    Stay
    Watchtower
    --------
    Too Much

Overall it was a pretty good mix of old and new. My favorites of the night were Warehouse, Jimi Thing (especially the sped up jam), Viva La Vida, The Stone, Two Step, Say Goodbye, #41, and Watchtower.

Hope everyone that made it out had a good time!

Yep. At the last BUT show in 2009 there was something up with the sound and it affected everyone. We can tell instantly if the main's are mixed correctly or not. The energy of the audience doesn't lie. Thankfully, Martin (sound guy @ Belly Up) dialed it in for us at this past show. 580 people. 20 short of sell out. Until we have a full time sound guy, we're at the mercy of people mixing our sound. Trust me, we get a lot of sound people that say to us "I hate the Dave Matthews Band. Have a good show." Inspiring from your sound guy, right? How do you think we end up sounding when the sound guy hates the band you're trying to pay tribute to?

mmccoy... check out the video of me and Aragorn performing a D&T style show. It was our first 3 hours show together. You won't want to miss the next one.

Haha. I may wish this was true of the real DMB. It sounds like their setlists might actually be better than the real bands on a given night.

I thought the Friday show was fantastic.
Great crowd energy and great band energy. Really liked the setlist (I better, I picked a handful of the songs) Lover Lay Down instead of Say Goodbye/Crash is a nice change. Mike's really getting the instrumental Warehouse down, I'm over the 'wooo' intro, esp in a bar. Time goes so quick though, I could've gonna another 30-45 minutes no problem.

I think Mike mentioned Canes in July. (not sure if it's still "Canes", but they put on some really good shows there a few summers back - I'll be there for sure!)

Stepping Feet is playing tonight at 10:00 at Soundwave (used to be called Canes) in Mission Beach (right next to the roller coaster). Should be a good set tonight. They've been taking requests on their facebook page and it looks like they should have a few good ones like JTR, Song That Jane Likes, maybe Say Goodbye, Dreaming Tree, Pig.

Anyone in the San Diego area who is free tonight should try to check them out!

    fun show last night.
    small but energetic crowd.
loved the mini solo set in the middle. it doesn't translate well for the attention span of a bar crowd, but musically it felt and sounded great.

band sounded real good. a night of singing and dancing is always welcome.

nice briefly meeting you dmb520 (stefan?). see ya next time!

    Good show last night.

    Tripping Billies
    One Sweet World
    Ants MArching
    Pantala Naga Pampa ->
    Rapunzel
    Satellite
    Lie In Our Graves
    The Stone
    Grey Street
    JTR
    Gravedigger (solo)
    Oh (solo)
    Stay Or Leave (solo)
    Two Step
    Stay
    What Would You Say
    Dreaming Tree
    Warehouse
    Funny the Way It Is
    Grace Is Gone
    Watchtower
    -----------------
    Bartender

I thought the solo songs were pretty good but they lost the crowd a little bit. The Stone, JTR, Dreaming Tree, and Watchtower were the highlights for me.

Hopefully more people make it out next time. Good meeting you Tom.

There is a calendar on their website. http://www.steppingfeet.com/ ... Things are a little slow with shows this month. Mike mentioned that they are playing a Dave and Tim style show at Gordon Biersch next Friday 7/16. Then they have a show at Longboards on Sat 7/24.

Yeild151 - are you a pearl jam fan?
I saw a gal in a blue EV guitar pick tee that had limited sales on some pearl jam boards. Was that u?

I bet the Friday duo show at GordonBiersh will be pretty good. Not sure I'll make it though we'll see...

Agree about JTR being a highlight. Mike thought it was too sloppy but I give a lot of latitude when playing a tricky song like that. Really hope they keep it in their rotation.

Glad some other Ants are showing up at their shows and enjoying 'em. Say hi next time. I'm usually riding the rail.
