BWGK - No Sales Last Power

After a great first week, its amazing how little the album has been selling thus far. Last week it was number 4 on Billboard. This week, it number 15 !!!! Behind many many acts that have been for 16 weeks or more on the charts. Is this lack of staying power or lack of continuous marketing efforts ?

A huge bulk of their fans do the pre-order, or are waiting to grab it right away. The ones after that are the casual fans or new fans that just discovered them (nothing wrong with them, it's just how it goes). When Why I Am comes out as a single, I bet the sales will go up a bit, then down, then the third single (thought to be You And Me) might bring it up again.

Plus, remember we are in a bad place economy wise, so people have less disposable income.

I also think them playing Europe has something to do with it. Last US show was 3 weeks ago, they lost all the local press. All those little interviews Dave and the band do really does make a difference when it comes to casual/new fans.

I think you are correct, when they return I think sales will be better.

Michael Jackson is not present on the Billboard 200, if he was, the band would be like #21.

Still, last week featured a ton of debuts...that is just the way it goes. The album has been selling very well so far. Over 700K in the US.

Also, minus debuts, the album would have been #9.

And also keep in mind, a lot of these postions are like 1,000 away from each eachother

    so #8 sells 35,000
    #9 34,000
    #10 33,500
    #11, 33,200

    etc.

Most every album falls off quickly. Just like most films at the box office after opening week.

That is not true at all. Plenty albums stay on for countless weeks.

I really think that having Shake Me as a single and getting radio play would be a wise move. It's not my favorite song but it does carry the strong studio performance that you want a single to have that acts as a motivator for a casual person to go pick up your record.

    Yes, that's what I meant.

The majority of albums, movies etc that start at or near the top drop out of the top 10-20 pretty quickly. Just a few super popular ones that can stay in the top 5-10 for more than a week or two or three.

Exactly, so they did better than most. I was saying the thread was bit silly as it has sold well, and just gradually dropped down the charts as most every album does.

I agree with this, I think they really missed a chance with making Shake Me a single. Every casual fan I've given the CD to has absolutely loved that song.

However it is one of my favorites songs on there, so maybe I'm a tad biased

It's selling about as well as a relatively mainstream rock band has done in the past few years. It's going to hit platinum at worst by the end of the year. The days of 7 million sellers, or even 3 million sellers, is for all intents and purposes, gone, until they find a new dominant medium. It's going to end up right behind U2's new release, which sounds about right to me.

Bear in mind, we are entering a new age. Musical success won't be judged by album sales forever, take my word for it. I'm sure downloading/sharing of BWGK is going like a wildfire right now.

The problem with the OP is calling the drop off "amazing." Because it's not.

Not that Mraz is that bad or anything but look at the quality of this disc vs. his. I don't understand how some artists groups whatever sell mediocre records so well and really good music from a band like DMB can't keep up with them. It's certainly not something I lose sleep over I just think it's funny how this things shake out.

It's kinda like if you went back to their time say 1975 imagining that K.C. and the Sunshine band would have outsold Led Zeppelin. Then again Funny the Way It Is, is no Kashmir.

I honestly think the success of Big Whiskey will manifest itself in concert tickets in coming years. New fans are being made by this record, even if they aren't going out and buying it... Like Panther41 said, this album is being shared with a ton of people who have never bought a DMB album before

Which is the way everything's headed these days. The significant money will be in merchandising (T-shirts, posters, anything bearing a band's name and imagery) and licensing songs for commercial use.

The RIAA and the government keep fighting this thing, but the times are a-changin' and they won't be able to sustain the old model anymore. Already iTunes has pretty much taken over the field.

EDIT: I can't take credit for this rant, it was a friend of mine--the above argument was pretty much his analysis of the situation, which I happen to agree with.

Theres not many people who buy CD's anymore, its a different market today. itunes and the internet all but put the record comps out of business. Nobodies fault, just a different time we live in. Besides, DMB never really dominated the charts for long periods of time anyway. They make there money touring.

Ok, Ill try to answer this. So when you go to a movie you ever notice that the newest movie is packed the first week, well the movie producers know, understand, and expect this... eventually you see that after about 1.5-2 months the movie isn't being shown anymore and replaced by something new, fresh, and ability to drawy new money. Well why shouldn't it be the same for music? DMB isn't the only viable marketable music machine out there. actually every week there is a new band making a run on the billboard charts, regardless of whether or not you prefer the bands music. truth is is that dmb is really far from the mainstream, even if you see a video on vh1 every one in a while (lol), and most dmb fans are ferocious about getting the newest stuff as soon as it hits the shelves, so i am more or less surprised to see dmb located where they are on the charts for as long as they have been.

That is with like 9 MJ titles ahead of it. It will be in the teens when the finals come out. Probably did around 23K as well.
