How do you treat sidewalks?

Hey all. Just a quick little experiment in humanity. No poll because I am on Tapatalk all day since I'm traveling. Some mod feel free to add one.

How do you treat sidewalks? Do you treat them like little roads and the people are little cars? Meaning you walk on the right and pray/hope they oncoming ped traffic does the same?

Or, is it every man for himself? Maybe you walk left center right DGAF kind of thing.

How do you think it should be?

Leaning towards the first scenario; should be unwritten rule, with second scenario being borderline savage behavior.

Feel free to answer the follow-up question below:

When leaving a building onto a sidewalk, do you just dart into the pandemonium already happening on the sidewalk like most inconsiderate people? Answer is no, by the way.

Sidewalk is treated like a road. Proceed forward on the right hand side.

If you need to stop, get the fuck off into an alcove or into the grass etc...

Bikes, get the fuck off and into the street. It's a sideWALK. (Unless the law in your city says otherwise.)

Treat it like a road, 100%.

Walk on the right, don't do a quick stop, look when you step out of a store, don't be a slow ass, don't take up the entire sidewalk with your fatass family, etc.

So many people walk on the left side or right down the middle and show absolutely no intention of moving over that I've started not moving myself and just shouldering into them. Provided they don't look like they can/will beat me up . But I've had quite a few people curse at me for literally doing the same thing they are, just not giving in to their power trip. I need some outlet for aggression, however slight, now that I haven't played contact sports in like 10 years haha.

I like to do it getting off an elevator when people don't want to wait for me to get off.

I've started stiff shouldering while walking (and jogging in parks - always with an "oncoming" and still they don't look up from their phones) ever since I've moved to NY

    Take care, Dan

Yes, don't really have too much of an elevator problem with that but the subways every. fucking. day. And it's rarely obvious tourists. It's people who you just know have lived here all their life. They just give zero fucks.

Not to be racial but will prob be called out on it, even though my inference can be backed up by actual experience... Asians do not give one single fuck about subway exit entry etiquette.

Oh yea. As a visitor, I tried to stand back and let people off but after a while it became clear that I was never going to get on the fucking train that way because of all the people you mentioned not giving fucks and jumping in front of me while people were still getting on.

Eventually I would just try to get myself against the train, just to the side of the door so I could still try to let people off without letting people get on in front of me.

Not sure I could deal with that shit every day, like if I lived there. It was pretty awful. I don't remember it being that bad the other times I was there... maybe I just didn't use the 4-5-6 that much last times, and it's just a clusterfuck of a train... idk.

i treat it like a roadway

same thing with narrow hallways and stairwells...worst is going up or down a turning staircase and some schmuck is crusing along their left-sided railing...i'm not moving, i refuse to move.

    That's exactly what I do.

The interesting thing is the amount of people that stand there and don't let people off varies by stop. It's not really any particular group of people really. White people do it as much as other people, people in suits who look well-to-do do it as much as people who don't, etc. My stop for work is hit or miss, but when I used to get off at Columbus Circle people would do it almost every time, no matter the time of day.

It's annoying but also kinda fun/funny to see how people will react if I just plow through them. I'm 6'4, so I usually have a size advantage. I'm just waiting for the time some crazy guy stabs me

Sidewalks, malls, boardwalks, etc are all like roads and people who walk against the flow of people are douches.

4-5-6 is amateur hour. Do what you got to do. My F train for the most part has some good etiquette, but there's a couple of stops where you just want to cunt punch a person onto the tracks.

Its also borderline hilarious the amount of people who walk around with golf umbrellas on a crowded city street, then get mad when their umbrella bounces off of some other persons comically over sized umbrella.

Like a road. Stay to the right, pass to the left when possible. If you're coming to a cross roads, the higher trafficked sidewalk has the right of way (example: if you're walking out onto the street from a residence or business, you need to yield to foot traffic)

what about people that walk the opposite flow in malls? I'm more inclined to be okay with this because there are some slow ass fucking people at the mall with their babies or their misbehaving kids. I don't have time for that, and if the other side is more open, you best believe I'm taking it to get around them.
