Every kid I know has them, the don't bother me, just some mindless fun. It's way better than the stupid bottle flipping fad was popular recently. They are banned at my kid's school unless the student "has a need for one," which I assume would involve a discussion with the parents and maybe a doctors note????

Not sure why a grown ass man would start a fidget spinner thread though.

My kids (7 and 8) have some and play with them all the time. They are harmless, for kids.

That bottle flipping phase was irritating AF though. Glad to have moved past that.

Back in March, my wife told me I should get one of those fidget cubes, because I told her how I'm always drumming on my desk and I get called out by coworkers. When I was looking them up, I found spinners which looked cooler, and quieter. So I bought one for $8. Lot of people at work were fascinated by it. Just something to hold while doing something on the computer rather than tapping.

Around a month or so later, it blew up and was all over the internet, teachers on Facebook complaining about them, memes online, then started seeing them for sale at festivals and even the grocery store. Mostly just sits on my desk now

yep, kids constantly spinning something and staring at it instead of being actively engaged, dropping them every 4 seconds, stealing them from each other, arguing about them...that's shitty classroom management

Taught 8th grade, so about 50 ~13 year olds, and the bolded never once happened. And yea, the kids spun them... that's what they're meant for.

Again, if things like fidgets create a legitimate distraction in the classroom, that's gonna be on the teacher. Sure, you might have a kid who creates a distraction with the spinner, but that's probably gonna be the MO of the kid regardless, and has nothing to do with the spinner.

can you please clarify the difference between a fidget spinner being a distraction and a kid creating a distraction with one? of course a fidget spinner sitting quietly on a desk isn't a distraction

Fwiw, I've taught 5-18 (and up) for about 10 years. But admittedly in a different environment. Esl and not in the us. But I can't understand how any person who has spent time in front of a class teaching children can genuinely share your opinion.

Kid sitting at his desk with it in their lap as they read or take notes = not a distraction. For anyone. Ever.

Kid throwing fidget in the air or spinning it and then trying to flick another student's ear = distraction, but one that would have been caused with any other object the student could have gotten their hands on.

I teach a large population of students with a range of IEPs and the enhancement of several students' behaviors and output after using these spinners was notable (since I'm not trained to take data in the class, my only real evidence is merely anecdotal).

out of the 130ish students in my sections, maybe 4 use their spinner like that.
