Just saw Black Snake Moan which was average at best. It had all the potential in the world. Samuel L. Jackson, Christina Ricci and a great new director in Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow) should've been able to make something more powerful IMO, like H&F. The characters were good, but the movie was just too short (and that's at 115 min.). The story of the main characters should've had more build-up so the viewers had more invested in them. The abrupt ending (last 10 minutes) was a major dissapointment too.

    Overall, 6/10.
I don't recall critics giving any bad press due to it being shocking, as it wasn't shocking. American Psycho got the brunt of that in regard to Ellis novels into movies. I know this can be said about most film adaptations, but the book is a great read and yes better than the movie. The difficulty I found in enjoying the movie, and the press around it, is that Roger Avary seems to be a huge Ellis fan; and that does not always bode well in productions of work.
Apparently, Avary is still searching for funding a film adaptation of Eliis' Glamorama. That book cannot be made into an R rated movie, and I don't believe Avary's career could take an NC-17. Now I know we live in the age of unedited director's cut crap, but if a film is going to cost as much as he seems to feel it may (and essentially it would) it will need an even bigger return at the box-office.
IMO, the book cannot be made into a film... if you can, read it, I hugely recommend it. I'd also like to see if others agree.
As for Ellis novels into film, I would recommend Less Than Zero and American Psycho before Rules as well.

Shocking may not have been the right choice of word, but they definetely slaughtered it (44% at rottentomatoes). I just think it was too weird for most people, with not one likeable character (which is emphasized in pretty much every review). It's also said there's no real drama, something I completely disagree with. This is one of the few teen movies where I can actually relate to the characters in a real way, in both a good and a bad way. The acting is good, the soundtracks kicks ass, the cinematography is excellent, and the storyline is captivating and entertaining throughout, mixing up the funny and sad in a way that works very well.

I've heard the book is great, but haven't had time to check it out yet. I'll definetely will some time though.

That's what I love about this. It's not some American Pie everything works out in the end kinda bullshit. It's just like real life: nothing works out as planned, the guy doesn't get the girl (because his cheesey-ass line didn't work), everyone is left miserable. I think I can relate to that more than anything.

Critics are idiots. I remember reading that most of them are failed screenwriters who give a lot of bad reviews just so they can show off to studios how they would do it better. Makes sense if it's true.

I actually fell asleep with 10 mins to go, and woke up with about 2 minutes to go, so I lost a bit... but they didn't need to go all b&w and Noir... they should've just told the story without the gimmics.

Creative take on irish immigrants coming to America. Great story, plot depth, and acting. The child actors are incredible. Djimon Hounsou is awesome. So much passion and warmth.

    highly recommend.

    In America:

Starring Djimon Hounsou (Gladiator, Blood Diamond)

Creative take on irish immigrants coming to America. Great story, plot depth, and acting. The child actors are incredible. Djimon Hounsou is awesome. So much passion and warmth.

    highly recommend.

that guy is a really good actor. He got jobbed for Blood Diamond.

I avoid printed (or online) reviews at all costs. I've gotten along just fine with choosing movies that I know exist by following an actor or film-maker or just good-ole' word-of-mouth. Movies, like music have particular nuances that are noticed by the individual so one can really only get the effect if experienced... I don't care if Ebert loved it or hated it, I'll have an opinion when it's over.
