I'm going to have to go with friends because I felt like it stayed a stong show the whole series.

HIMYM went down in quality towards the last few seasons

I am a huge How I Met Your Mother fan and I recently watched Friends all the way through for the first time. One reason that makes me want to choose HIMYM is Pheobe. Maybe I'm in a minority, but I absolutely despised all of her storylines. They always seemed extra and unnecessary and I never found her schtick funny, at all. It got to the point where I was fast forwarding through some of her parts. But I do recognize that Friends does not have the decline as the season went on that HIMYM did, so I guess I will go with Friends? I still prefer to rewatch HIMYM though.

However, in my opinion, the very best episodes of How I Met Your Mother, blow the best episodes of Friends out of the water.

HIMYM.

Though the show went significantly downhill once Lilly & Marshall had a baby, and I definitely did not like the ending (though, on a recent re-watch of the series, I didn't mind the ending as much as I did the first time), I still liked it a lot better than Friends.

I watched Friends at the time, but won't watch any reruns. I really can't stand Ross or Phoebe.

yeah the older I get the worse ross is as a character. there are also an insane amount of gay jokes, like at least one per episode

Friends gets points for doing it first.

I did a rewatch of Friends recently and there are absolutely some jokes that feel dated, and the laugh track is absolutely brutal. Too soon to tell if HIMYM will stand the test of time or not. I'm betting in 15 years, it'll feel a little dated too. I feel like Barney's catch phrases will be the first thing to get old.


I disagree that Friends' quality remained until the end. It went downhill. Chandler in particular was basically a throwaway character when he once was the best part of the show. Same happened with Marshall on HIMYM. Man did they ruin Marshall.

That said, Friends didn't crash as hard as HIMYM. There is nothing in Friends, or maybe any show ever, that is as bad as "Who Wants to Be a Godparent?" It's utterly unwatchable garbage. But, on the other side, there's nothing in Friends as good as The Pineapple Incident or Slap Bet.


The attention to detail HIMYM had with running threads, self-referential jokes, call backs etc... was truly remarkable. Every time I run through that series, I catch more and more subtle examples that I missed before. That along with the highs being higher than Friends, is why I'd vote HIMYM.

Same. Early episodes of Friends can be funny. Phoebe is really the only funny thing on there. Ross is my least favorite character in any show I've ever seen. "the nap" might be the only funny thing he did on the show.

HIMYM might be the worst "sitcom" I've ever seen. I've probably chuckled twice at that show. Only people who I know who like that shit are college girls and dudes with horrible taste.

Can't tell you how many times I've heard/read this about Barney "oh he's a playboy on the show but NPH is actually gay in real life!" That premise is not funny. It never was. Yes, I'm melting but I feel very strongly about this. I'd rather watch the current season of Big Bang Theory than HIMYM.

Started Rules of engagement with my son. So far it's been really funny. It's super raunchy.

I watched it on and off when it was on originally.

Patrick Walburton is funny as shit.

To the OP, How I Met. Don't hate on either, I don't think I'm as critical as a lot of folks here. No show is perfect.

Friends is ok. We've been through it once, but watched HIM multiple times.

I was more into Friends while it was airing than I ever was HIMYM while it was airing. But when I revisit now, HIMYM holds up for me much better, minus probably seasons 2-4 or so of Friends.

Completely agree.

Spade has some really funny lines though and Hudson’s character is pretty solidly funny too.

It’s seriously had more laugh out loud moments for me than HIM ever did already for me.

Seinfeld is grossly overrated and stands up zero present day imo.

It makes no sense to teenagers today but they love HIM, Parks, the office.

And I watched it every week on network tv.
