I don't follow the sport but do know one name, Russell Baze. I don't think he's ever been in the pursuit for the Triple Crown and it amazes me nobody has asked him to ride in one or all three of the races.

There used to be a race track here in San Mateo named Bay Meadows. It was tore down several years ago to make room for housing. The county fair grounds sits right next to the former site of Bay Meadows and has a Jockey Club. I would've loved to have been in that club on Saturday just to see how ape shit everyone went. Never went to Bay Meadows myself to watch a race. Did go there once on a school field trip and when I was a kid going to school in the morning you could see the horses out on the warm track. Its kind of cool just thinking about it.

Breeders' Cup field is stacked. Some familiar faces in there:

Would love to see AM take it home once last time. Obviously the favorite at 6-5 http://www.breederscup.com/contenders/119

Could have another Triple Crown winner this year or we could just have two very good horses that barely miss out on it: http://touch.latimes.com/#section/-1.../p2p-86338041/

Nyquist and Mohaymen are the real deal apparently.

Thinking about going this year finally. To anyone who has ever been is it worth catching the Oaks the day before?

Arrogate ran one of the best races I've seen in the Dubai World Cup today (tonight? Tomorrow? Wtf time is it over there?).

Got a terrible break, started dead last and rallied to win by ~3 lengths.

Do it. I went last year and it was one of the grestest experiences I've ever had. My buddy last minute couldn't go and I flew solo and met up with another friend. Sat in the infield all day and drank mint juleps and smoke cigars.

Infield tix are cheap ($60) but you need to plan months in advance if you want better seats and hotel rooms.

Yeah I've wanted to go for years. Never been. Just realized this weekend it's the weekend after my school semester ends and Dave and tim are in Nashville that weekend so I may do the oaks and the derby fri/sat and then d&t Sunday?

Have any tips? Where'd you stay, etc

I actually stayed at a friend's house in Nashville. Took a bus there and back. Rally Bus. It was shit. Bus was nice, but the service sucked ass. The bus was 45 minutes late the morning at the bus station.

Circled Churchill Downs for an hour because we were late and the drop off spot wasn't ready or some shit. After the race they had moved the bus to a completely different spot and didn't tell us beforehand. They emailed us to update the new pick up location and luckily I thought to check my email and that's the only reason I found where they parked it.

    Huh. Good to know!

What was the experience like in the infield. The only track I've been to is saratoga which is mostly completely different than the derby id expect. Travers day may be comparable but. Where near the crowd.

It's a madhouse. All the reviews you would read about it would do it justice to an extent. I stayed near the front at the cigar tent for a majority of my time so I didn't see too much riff raff.

Best way I could describe it based on personal experience is it's basically a combo of Spring Break/college football tailgate/fraternity or sorority formal. People dressed to the nines and then some dudes wearing no shirts and swim trunks.

I'll get real seats next time I go, but everyone should experience it once. I wouldn't bring a lot of shit because that's how stuff gets stolen and what not and I would explore the whole infield and not just stay at one place. I feel like I only saw a small portion of it. Oh yeah and drink a ton of water if you can remember to.
