“Office” also bettered its season-long retention rate out of “Earl,” 71 percent, significantly. The two shows moved from the Tuesday 9 p.m. hour to Thursday at 9 p.m. for the first time last night.

“Earl,” meanwhile, came in slightly below its 5.5 season-to-date average, posting a 5.2 in the 9p.m. timeslot. But both “Earl” and “Office’s” ratings are even more impressive considering they aired head-to-head with an original episode of CBS’s “CSI,” which averaged a 9.3 overnight rating among 18-49s.

“Office” had a successful Thursday-night premiere last March but struggled mightily on Tuesdays until “Earl” rescued it last fall. Still, many media people felt the show had underperformed with such a strong lead-out.

With last night’s showing, “Office” finally delivered on the potential that NBC saw in it by keeping the critical hit around despite dismally low numbers last spring. Should it remain strong, “Office” will be one of the most impressive turnaround stories in recent years.

Even better for NBC, new show “Four Kings,” which aired at 8:30 p.m., did quite well despite bad reviews, building on its “Will & Grace” lead-in and bettering the latter’s season-long average in the timeslot with a 4.2 rating. “Grace” now leads off the night.
Meanwhile, Four Kings, NBC's new thursday show, received the worst ratings NBC has had for the premiere of a new show on a thursday night since 1991.

I haven't seen the NBC version of The Office. But I love the original. You should check it out sometime if you haven't seen it. Here's a little sample.

It's a clip of Ricky Gervais dancing. It's hilarious.

I never thought I'd like this show but I caught an episode and loved it. Steve Karrell (SP?) totally makes the show

So, yesterday Dwight found half a joint in the parking lot. Which is unfortunate, because it turns out that Dwight finding drugs is more dangerous than most people using drugs.

I loved the original, and I love this version as well. While I'm sure no one would admit it, I think there are plenty of people out there who won't allow themselves to like the new one, even if it is good.

I agree. While the new version is fundamentally different than the original British version, it still has its strengths. Greg Daniels, the show runner of the US Version, is responsible for 3 of the top 10 Simpsons episodes of all time, not to mention BJ Novak (who plays Ryan the Temp) wrote Diversity Day and Sexual Harassment, two episodes that honestly rival the British one in terms of laughs.

As far as shortcomings, Dwight is no Gareth, the original was 10 minutes longer, and they did a better job of making you actually sympathize with David Brent (with the arrival of the Swindon people)

Both great shows, UK is better, but US is still defintley worth watching

This is definitely the second funniest show on TV right now behind Arrested Development. Still praying for that show's life...

Last night's episode may have been the funniest yet. Dwight crashing his car, throwing up on the back of it, then getting back in to go pick up Michael nearly made me piss my pants.

I thought the scene in the van was hilarious. As was Dwight's "That's what she said" joke.

I also find Pam quite attractive.

Last night's episode was very funny. I was at my gf's so her and her roomies were talking over the show the whole time, so didn't catch all of it, but form what I did, I was laughing my ass off.

When they were taking that guy to the hospital and Carrell was like "Pam isn't going to get any guys driving this". Then, finding the JD in the backseat and spraying that guy in the face consistently to keep him from drinking it (but I'm thirsty!". The more he sprayed, the funnier I thought it was. Lastly when the guy was getting his catscan (sp? the only medical term I know is quone - when the patient gets difficult you quone them) and Carrell is trying to stick his foot in there. Pure hilarity.

The best part of the episode, no doubt. After he crashes his Trans Am he grabs his head and then throws up all over the back window.
Also the foot in the Catscan was classic.

I thought that was funny too. My wife pointed out that if you forget it's a remake, relative to the rest of the shit that's on TV it is pretty original.

Edit: I know, it's really not a remake... but you know what I mean.

i like bacon when i wake up, so i lay four strips of bacon on my Foreman Grill before i go to bed and when i wake up, i turn it on and then go back to sleep for a few more minutes, and when i wake up to the aroma of the bacon, i have my breakfast and go to work...

this particular morning i just happened to step on the grill...

what? what? i dont see whats so weird about that?!?

i liked the end of last night's episode. thought it was really cute.

i still can't get over the episode where michael 'cooked' his foot though. one of my favorites...

and as an aside, i finally bit the bullet and bought season 1 on dvd last week. i cannot wait to relive it!!!
