I can remember going to the public pool when I was little, and I was a really good swimmer, and my mom always got in with me and stuck with us. Heck, we had a pool in our back yard, and even though I was on a swim team, I wasn't allowed to swim in the pool without my mom or dad at least in the area.

I've actually had to jump in and pull kids out of 4 feet with mom/dad standing about 4 feet from them, in the pool, not paying attention because flirting with someone else's wife/husband was keeping their attention. It's awful.

You're also an amazing mom, Ange!
Awww Thanks Katie.

I was at the beach when I was 5 months pregnant and I saw a little boy (7-8) take a boogie board out into the ocean, the waves in the Pacific can be pretty rough so I watched him for just a second and sure enough, he started drowning.

I ran down the beach (well waddled really) and swam out and got him, right after I got to him and held him up, the lifeguard got there and took over.

Found out after we got to the shore that the kid did not know how to swim. Why the eff would you give your kid a boogie board and let him go in the ocean with it alone, if he can't swim!?

    You're welcome; it's true!

And that is so horrible. Did mom or dad show up at any point? That's scary, and it's a really good thing you were there and were nice enough to help him out. The ocean is even more dangerous than a pool, because a pool is at least a somewhat controlled environment.

I'm a fan of a kid that I had to save whose mom said "she told me she knows how to swim!" Ummm, aren't you involved in her lessons and know whether or not she does, or does the nanny take her to lessons and you just get reports from your own child about their life?

this happens to me ALL the time! i life guard at a country club, so during the week the kids are with their mom or a babysitter. a lot of the moms just order cocktails at 11 in the morning and gossip with the other moms while little baby joey is falling into the pool

most of the dads make a ton of money so the moms don't have to work, so you would think that these moms would at least play with their young children... maybe it's just me, but i can't wait to be a mom and hang out with the little runts

Well I was 5 months pregnant and just swam out in the ocean to save a drowning 7 year old, I pretty much just sat down on the sand and caught my breath.

One of them is that if a child cannot swim without a flotation device (vest or noodle, or whatever), a parent or guardian has to be in the pool with them.

I got into a 20-minute argument with a woman last night who didn't understand why I wouldn't let her 3 year old into a pool that goes to 6 feet deep if mom wasn't with the child. I"m not a baby sitter. I'm here to provide CPR or other emergency care if it's needed. In the mean time, I'm doing everything I can to prevent me from having to use those skills....the fact that the mom was annoyed that I wanted to keep her kid safe boggled my mind.
I lifeguarded a few years ago when I was in highschool, and some of the parents were completely ridiculous. It didn't help that they obviously had no respect for me as a 17 year old kid.

Yeah, that's awful. This is also an issue I have with the job. I get it as a female. If I'm enforcing the rules, I'm a bitch, but if my male co-worker does, he's just laying down the rules.
