That's some absurd micromanagement from people not playing on stage if that's the case. As mentioned by someone else previously, Boyd had some really great performances leading up to Jiffy Lube. Blossom was fantastic. If he's having an off night and screeching off key notes, I'm all for dialing it back a little bit. I've certainly witnessed less than stellar performances.
But if the sound guys are making predeterminations to just shut him off before the show starts for whatever reason, that's pathetic. Boyd still has great moments all the time, and personally, those are some of my favorite parts of DMB's music.
